Orange is Beautiful

Since I am already up I decided to do one more assignment before I finally went to bed. After I Warhol-ed myself I was ready to play around with Gimp some more. The Splash of Color assignment came up on random shuffle and so I jumped on it. This is one of my favorite photos, one because it represents the beginning of spring and the end of winter, my least favorite season, but also the orange. I LOVE orange, especially the vibrancy of this orange. So I decided to feature it. After Warholing myself this was a piece of cake. I love how it turned out.

Five Sound Story

My five sounds: rain, thunder, birds, children playing, puddles splashing

It’s a raining day- no just any rainy day… its pouring and there is thunder! You are a child..disappointed, upset, dying for the rain to stop so you can play outside. Then, the thunder gets quieter, bird start chirping, and the sun comes out. You and your sibling rush outside to play, ignoring the fact that your shoes are soaked from the puddles.

Remix #1 (Visual): Twilight Gothic, Tutorial

Here’s how I went about this remix.

  1. Starting in Pixlr’s advanced option, which looks similar to Gimp or Photoshop, I first uploaded three images (Bella, Edward, and the painting).
  2. I used the Wand tool to cut around the heads of the figures in the painting, deleting them and creating an empty space. In retrospect I probably didn’t need to do this, since the new heads would have covered the old.
  3. Then I cut the head from the image of Edward, clicked on the painting, created a new layer, and copied his head onto the painting.
  4. I realized at this point that I didn’t have the sizes correlated for each image, because Edward’s head was tiny and I couldn’t figure out how to make it bigger. So I deleted the layer I’d just created, went back to Edward’s initial image, enlarged it until his head was proportional to the gent in Wood’s painting, and went through the process again.
  5. I did the same process with Bella. Through this process I saved at multiple points with different filenames so I could backtrack easily if necessary.
  6. At this point I used the pointer tool to move the heads into position. Edward’s looked pretty good, but Bella’s was more problematic because of the lighting. I probably should have stopped and found another photo at this point… but I didn’t.
  7. I “flattened” the image, essentially merging all the layers into one. The I began to finesse the image to make it look less fake.
  8. I used the “magic brush” tool highlight areas that needed color, and then used the “clone” tool to copy a nearby section and reproduce it. This took some practice and backtracking before I got the hang of it.
  9. I tried adjusting Bella’s skin tone and highlighting, but after a long time messing with it, I still didn’t see it getting much better. At this point I saved again, and then reopened the image in Pixlr’s “efficient” option.
  10. I used the Touch-up and Airbrush tools to keep working on Bella. Then I played around with Color, Color Splash, Contrast, and the Effects option. A more sepia toned look seemed best.

Overall, I was fairly pleased with how it turned out, with the takeaway that next time I’ll spend more consideration on matching the original images for lighting.

Start with a Bang . . .

Assignment (Visual): Photo It Life Peanut Butter . . . three star icons

I confess that I’ve never before seen the appeal of animated GIFs. Weren’t those the goofy little hyper cartoon characters that ran rampant in PowerPoints in an early era?

So I’ve had a bit of a change of heart, though I still think you can get too much of a good thing when it comes to animated GIFs and that the animation needs to contribute to the visual story’s compellingness (that should be a word) substantially. Animation for cuteness’s sake just doesn’t cut it for me.

To date, these are the most compelling animated GIFs I’ve seen — CogDog’s Animated Water. I get a real sense of being there. I can hear the splashing. Feel the mist. Yes! The animation makes the story richer. I also love the subtlety of this water-enhanced image “Animated GIFs from Your Own Photos.”

So you may laugh when you see my first animated GIF. I realize you may feel that I’ve resorted to cuteness, but I’d like to think that the fireworks shooting around me (my avatar) conveys a bit of the sense of the wonder I feel every time I pop into this virtual world. I am there. And when I watch this GIF I hear sizzle, pop, and bang.

I thought of sharing the experience of flying among the fireworks over the Bookhenge on Star Island because one of my students, Jennifer, emailed recently to say that she still often returns to the Bookhenge just to fly among the fireworks. And I thought I was the only one who loved to do that.

So do come visit the Bookhenge some time and fly up among the fireworks. If there’s no display going off, just let me know — 2B Writer — and we’ll create a fireworks celebration just for you.

Avatar floating in fireworks

GIMP is new to me but I’ve had some excellent tutoring from a PhotoShop pro. Still, there’s nothing like tying yourself to a Herman Miller Aeron until you come up with a decent product. The most valuable lesson I learned is that you need to make sure that the dimensions of your image fit your theme. I’d remembered that 640 filled the blog column so I went with that. Thank goodness I did. I later, when trying to troubleshoot the lack of animation on my blog, found a chart with the max dimensions per blog theme. 640 it was for my Twenty-Ten.

I think beginning with the GIF was actually a good intro to GIMP because it helped me begin to grasp the layers concept without actually having to do any real editing yet.

I’ll look forward to making more GIFs when I see that the animation serves my story.

Mission: ds106 – visual assignment sprint

I found some time over the past two days to sprint through a handful of Mission: DS106 visual assignments. My notes are spread over a few devices (including my favorite red-covered Moleskine), but I’ll try to get my thoughts in order and give a full accounting of each assignment. I’ll present them in asynchronous order by complexity, from what felt like the least complex task to the most complex one.

For these activities, I used a MacBook running OSX 10.6.8 on a 2.26 GHz Intel Core Duo 2 with 2 GB of memory. Chrome is my current browser of choice. When I talk about drawing or coloring something, I mean “drawing or coloring something with a Wacom Bamboo tablet.” (These are like my global variables, thus called.)

Stories Written in a Window – 3 stars

I wrote Still Alive and Climbing the Walls in iTunes. I tried to pick songs that reflected what I have on this computer (which carries only a bit of my poor, neglected-on-an-external-hard-drive music collection). I also tried to include a few songs by friends and friends of friends that I hope folks will go out and find and/or hear on DS106 Radio.

Most of what I listen to is pop of one kind or another, so I wrote a love story. Here it is:

"Still Alive and Climbing Up the Walls"

Replay Value – 3 stars

I call this one The Love Triangle. Though the assignment is worth 3 stars, I’ll only claim one here. I’m not entirely satisfied with the result, but something about it’s glaring artificiality defies any further editorial meddling from me.

"Love Triangle"

For this piece, I imagined Steve, Pip Boy, and Journey’s Protagonist meeting in a desert (alas, alack, and rue the day, I couldn’t find any cc-licensed pictures of Lucky Wander Boy).

On Flickr, I found cc-licensed pictures of each of these characters being cos-played. Here are Steve, Pip-Boy, and the
“>Protagonist
.

I used Acorn (my trial is almost up, so I am sad) to ditch the backgrounds by using the magic wand to outline and then cut the characters out of the pictures. I then saved just the characters as .pngs with transparent backgrounds.

Then I brought everybody into ComicLife against a desert-climate Minecraft screenshot I took from the DS106 server as viewed from my own computer. I used ComicLife to compose the piece because I wanted to add a witty caption or bit of dialogue. However, after seeing the look in Steve’s eyes, I decided to keep quiet.

Since Steve is armed, I put the characters into a triangle and imagined them embroiled in some kind of emotional struggle with one another – how does one adapt to finding other people where there should be none? What emotional habits kick in once we enter community?

Comic Book Effect – 1 star

I used Photo Booth to grab a silly picture of myself and then headed over to Acorn to throw a half-tone dot effect over it. Once I achieved half-tonality, I opened up ComicLife and set up a half-Dark-Knight-Returns, half-Scott-McCloud, half splash-page layout to show myself sitting the Marvel Way. I look just like my dad looks when he plays video games, but he sometimes sticks out his tongue. Like Jordan. My dad is the man.

"Sitting Down the Marvel Way!*"

Draw it. – 2 stars

I remain drawn to the portrait I used for my Daily Create trace drawing. The amount of detail in the photograph captivates me – it speaks to the part of my brain that has been filling up bookscovers and meeting agendas with cartoon eyes, cross-hatching, flames, flowers, spirals, and stick-figure legs since 1990. I went back to the same portrait for this exercise and the next.

I wanted to find a combination of filters that made the portrait look like a pencil drawing while preserving the volume of the subject’s beard. I clicked through a number of combinations in Photoshop Elements 9, and eventually settled on the pencil cross-hatch effect combined with fully desaturated colors and dust and scratched noise to soften the cross hatching and add volume back to the beard.

"Beard with Volume"

Warhol Something – 3 stars

This was the first visual activity I tackled. I found myself using several different programs to get it done. Each program had bits that seemed intuitive to me, and each had bits that seemed obtuse, so I bounced back and forth between them at my whim.

I went back to my portrait and pasted it into SketchBook Pro. I added a layer and colored in different areas with colors that appealed to me in vaguely Warholian ways.

Then I went to Acorn and used the magic wand to prune a copy of the original image so that I would up with a layer of details I could paste over the colored image in SketchBook Pro in hope of creating a silk-screen effect.

I dig it.

"Beard with Warhol"

An Album Cover – 2 stars

My random Wikipedia search turned up Konrad I, Duke of Glogow. I rolled through his dad’s page and found the Piast Dynasty and its arms.

From there I did a cc-license search for Piast on Flickr and found a sculpture of the arms.

At that point I decided to try something inspired by the work of Rose Chase, a high school drama club pal, who designs for the Lower Dens, a Baltimore-based band.

I am no Rose Chase, but I went into Photoshop Elements 9 and equalized the images of the Piast arms. Next I put a blue photo filter on the image, blurred it five times, and desaturated the colors. To create the band of arms, I threw a 4-panel kaleidoscope effect on the arms, separated out the lower elements, and stitched them back on to the side of the upper elements. I drew, shadowed, and copied a few gold chevrons to represent one of the Piast colors and Konrad’s military victories. Finally, I dropped in the band and album names, adjusting the kerning on “Konrad1″ and the line spacing on “The Duke of Glogow.” I picked Trebuchet MS – a favorite sans-serif font of mine – and pink so that the lettering would conserve some interior weight and pop a bit.

Get ready for the drop:

"Konrad1 - Duke of Glogow"

Picturing Prufrock – 3 stars

I love comic books covers by Brian Bolland and Jim Steranko, and I staggered after them here.

First, I printed and read the poem, marking up lines that spoke to me. Then I started sketching street signs in my Moleskine. Pretty quickly, I decided on iterating a picture of a faceless man whittling a mask while seated on a pile of discarded faces. I gave him some shirt-sleeves because why not?

I went into SketchBook Pro and did a blue-line drawing, which is something I picked up from traditional comic book pencilling – artists sometimes layout a page in blue pencil (which doesn’t photocopy) before drawing “finished” pencils on the page for photographing and inking.

"Blue-line Prufrock"

On top of the blue-line sketch I drew a black-line picture of the man and his faces.

"Black-line Prufrock"

After that, I opened Acorn to get rid of the background and keep the figure and faces.

I added a nerve filtered to translucency in a layer behind the figure, and behind that I added a circular patten, coloring every other ring yellow as the fog curling around the house (sorry – couldn’t help it). I also inserted a text layer in a modern font with the lines that inspired the work.

I saved the image and exported it as a .jpg. I brought the .jpg into comic life and added the marquee lettering, which I wanted to be a bit jarring – this would be a Vertigo title, no? I used our bunkhouse logo for the publisher’s imprint and priced the comic according to my ever-loving whim. Finally, I added a lovely portrait called “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” and pushed it to the back of the image to take care of some of the negative space underneath the circles. I liked using a huge face that someone shot to represent the poem because it fit with what interested me about the poem this time around – the creative donning and murderous abandonment of different faces and identities.

Here is the cover as it stands around, maudlin and modern:

"Prufrock - the Comic"

I’m still processing all the work, but I felt delighted and surprised throughout by how some pieces defied my expectations of myself and came out much better – or even much worse – than I imagined. I would like to practice enough visual arts this summer to get a better feel for the kinds of tools and design approaches that can consistently get me into a flow state in pursuit of work that delights me. And I want to connect it all to what I’m learning about coding while noodling about in the shallowest kiddie pools of HTML, CSS, Javascript, and game design.

Sound of Spring!!

The third and final ds106 assignment for the FALO section. As it was required to do assignments from different categories ,I decided to give Audio Assignments a try.

The assignment is called “Spring Break!!!

What I had to do:

Take a 30 second take of what your spring break sounds like. This could be anything from the sounds of a page turning of a book to a WILD PARTY! So let me know what you have going on.

Story: I am planning on going back to Sri Lanka during the spring break. April in Sri Lanka is usually the the hottest(as in warm) month in the year. The sun blazing right above our tropical island, we roam around in our flip-flops. Having been freezing for the last few months , I do miss my tropical weather( you should have asked me a year back and I would have said something totally different). So right now ,everytime I think of spring break, all I can picture myself is jumping into the pool . Few pool parties with my awesomely crazy family. I dont know how much I am gonna really “swim” but then theres gonna be lots of water splashing,so called swimming, making up our own styles and just simply enjoying the break! If god wills ,thats what my spring break is going to be like with not to forget lots and lots shopping! So far thats all thats planned ! :)

Emphasize my favorite food!!

The ds106 assignment that I chose is “Splash The Color” of Visual Assignment.

I supposed to do the other assignment in this section because I’ve already  did Visual Assignment.

However, my PC did not work on the other assignment such as audio and video so I gave up to do them….:((

I will do them next section!!!!!!

Instruction: “Color splash is a technique to emphasize details- you remove all color from a photo, and then restore original color to a single object, e.g. a green apple on a table. Think of the Girl in the red dress from Schindler’s List.

I use this picture which took at my house.

As you can see, this is cucumber:) It’s my favorite food!!!!!!!!!!! I always eat it.

I wanted to emphasize this cucumber.hahaha

I used ‘Color Touch’ which is free app. I got this idea app from Ren Isozaki.

Thank you. DONE<3

Ill-Timed Travel

Tracy had never wondered what her friend was like in youth, she was exactly the same just in a different time and place.

The sharp pungent scent of chlorine and echoed laughter of children set the stage. Normally the gentle whispers of energetic nurses and could be herd, and the screech of a whistle for scampering children. This day was special; it was a day for a show. Three rows: four, three, two, of shinny elastic Pepto-Bismol swim caps.  Each woman adorned with polka-dots and a fake glossy smile. They had trained for months, none of them wanting to, some had given up on health, others on life. The doctor, and overbearing children often win.

Each woman was one nuclear shade of lipstick away from vanishing, what was the point of such theatrics? The Everly Brothers were switched on, and the routine began. Each movement slow and concentrated, pasty, saggy, and with little genuine enthusiasm, the years of wear on each body resulting in perfect synchronization. The splashing was gentle and delicate, like reaching your hand between the barbs of a electric fence to fetch a valuable.   The first chorus went well, splashing and smiling the ladies were having no difficulty faking their enjoyment enough to please the supervision. It was when the ladies had formed a star with wrinkled and slippery hands that Ruth broke away. Great balls of fire, she had left them again and was making a run for it.

“Welcome. Welcome I am so glad you decided to stop by” she said opening her arms wide to Tracy, whose look went from concern to confusion, where had she gone this time? Tracy the ever present friend was always the one to go to the rescue of their friend Ruth. Ruth was the shortest, darkest, and she gave the least gruff about her forced exercise, she knew about her disease but hardly remembered about it. ‘Hopefully it disrupts and entertains enough to give you all a break’ she used to say with a thick Brooklyn accent when the ladies would talk together. Tracy was such a busy-body, ‘that is what you get for having millions of kids, just care care care all the time’ she had herd the other ladies say behind her back. Eventually Ruth would lose all of herself totally, but not just yet.  She really preferred the past to the present anyways, let it come quickly she thought to herself often.

“You know the pool is just one of the many new features our hotel has to offer, if you would follow me this way I can show you to the sauna and the steam rooms too” she explained with a slightly mischievous grin. Just then the final number came on the cheap pink boom-box. The music was muffled from the protective plastic bag and the pool was not known for its acoustics, but Elves Presley was Elves Presley even through a plastic bag. The music changed Ruth, and she stopped mouth agape scraggily pink lipstick, cataract blue eyes, and enough wrinkles to write a story.

“I always have a couple of extra minutes for Elvis” she proclaimed and proceeded to dance energetically, splashing with her arms and kicking her legs up as far as they would go.

Process:

This is my second DS106 assignment of the section “Tarantino Your Story!” This is my story, and I just followed the directions and put the last sentence at the beginning, I wonder if you all can tell? This is from the Writing section, one of my favorites, so I am sad to see it go~ I hope you enjoy the story, let me know what you think. I re-did some of the sentences you can see them in purple, I hope it affords clarification. Also I added some pictures, because everyone loves pictures and I think it helps capture the reminiscent feeling that I am going for. Did I go overboard with the pictures?? Let me know~
