My Very Own Spubble

spubble

This is in response to the DS 106 assignment: “Learn to love yourself! Grab a picture of yourself in which your body language, actions, gestures, etc. suggest one thing and then play off that using a speech bubble–that’s called SPUBBLE. Ideally, the result would make people laugh—but I must acknowledge there are other possible emotional responses that may be just as acceptable.”

I had been trying to figure out how to make an animated gif and whether or not the result would be worth the learning curve. My sister Cheryl and I were walking by Delta Ponds when I saw this sign over the new salmon counter. I started playing around and Cheryl got this shot of me.

I added the spubble in Piknik, but not very well!

The beach boys “Kokomo” music mapped video

Click here to view the embedded video.

So the assignment is to.. “Pick a song that has geographic references (or heck ,make up the references), and create a Google Map that has the locations along with media for each pin in the map. Mash it up with the audio or video of the song into a new video- making it a music mapped video!” -cogdog

The first song that popped into my head was the beach boys “kokomo” song. It lists many locations in the carribbean. When i googl mapped the locations some of them dont have that red pin point button over the location. So i copied the image and pasted it over the locations without the button. I got the image of the button and the maps by taking a photo of the screen. Macs have this option by holding Command, Shift, 3 and it takes a pict of the screen. You can also select the area where you want to photograph instead by holding Command, Shift, 4 …. which is what i did.

This project took unnecessary steps since i didnt have or knew the best software to do this in. I started on a Mac with Adobe Fireworks to make the animated gif. But then I didnt know how to get the song off youtube. So when I got home I used a Windows and used Realplayer to get the song. Then had to use Windows Live Movie Maker to put the clips together. This program didnt take all my slides from my gif only the first image. So i had to resave the gif and export it as each slide to get all the slides as different image documents. Then imported in Windows Live Movie Maker. Added the music, adjusted the stage times and put in some video animations.

Walker Triple Troll Attack

This submission is for the Triple Troll Attack. Walker is the common item among the quote, wrongly cited speaker and the animated character.

The idea to mix these three walkers occurred while planning yesterday’s malware slideshow.

The image of the Walker virus was found on an online version of an old paper by Finland’s favorite cyber sleuth Mikko Hyppönen that might be of interest to students wanting to do further research on malware for upcoming blogposts.

As an added benefit, a guy named Benjamen Walker (yes, yet another Walker) produced an awesome radio segment dealing with these topics for WFMU. Check out his talk with Nart Villeneuve on the October 10, 2010 episode of Too Much Information for a great discussion on Stuxnet and Facebook malware (it begins at the 23:10 minute mark of the hourlong program). Villeneuve refers to the term zero-day exploit – this would also be an interesting topic to look in to further.

Creating the Triple Troll image was quite simple. I grabbed the image from Hyppönen’s site and did added the green text in Aviary. But it really begs to be rendered as an animated GIF.

So I’ve given away one of the three parts of the challenge: Walker Virus. Can you figure ou the other two? Who said Dy-No-Mite and/or who is Cordell Walker?

Cinemagraph

Baraka Cinemagraph

A Cinemagraph from a scene in the movie "Baraka"

I decided that with all of the animated GIFs being posted to DS106, I would try my hand at creating a Cinemagraph, which is a specific form of animated GIF, described as “somewhere between a still photograph, and a video”.

My inspiration came from this collection of movie Cinemagraphs, and I used this tutorial to get the general idea.

This scene in particular comes from the film “Baraka”, during the portion of the film titled “The Hard Side Of Life“. For those not familiar with the film, it is a sort-of documentary, but explaining it in any detail is hard. I highly recommend it.

Any Threes?

This seemed to be the best way I could find to comment on Alan Levine’s Animated MacGuffin which is now a “MacGIFfin”. And if you know this scene in The Sting, Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw) set’s up Harry Gondorf (Paul Newman) with a hand of four threes, which he is to beat with his setup hand of four nines. But Gondorf is the better cheat, substituting four Jacks. Go fish Lonnegan!

Hooray!

Bugs Bunny gets all the love, but Woody Woodpecker was just as bad ass, so I’m dedicating my first GIF in a long while to the classic “Niagara Fools” episode, which this GIF is taken from. If you haven’t seen this one yet, you really, really should.

What’s more, I came up with this animated GIF while searching for another Woody Woodpecker episode titled “Bunco Busters” (see it here) that has the classic line “If Woody had gone right to the police, this would never have happened.” For me, this episode of Woody Woodpecker is the ultimate in messing with the MacGuffin because at several key points throughout the cartoon a noir-inspired detective with burning cigarette intervenes to let everyone know how Woody could have avoided being swindled by Vulture. It’s great stuff, and in many ways the ur-messing-with-macguffin, at least from Woody Woodpecker cartoons.

Send Bill a Thank You Card! (instead of Kill Bill)

This was completed in the 25 minutes @scottlo from Tokyo gave us to listen to music and finish a task. Thanks @scottlo!

And lest I forget, the Messed up Animated GIF MacGuffin was first introduced by Todd Conaway and then the gauntlet was thrown by cogdog.

? Going Home

I grew up in a small town called Fairborn that was situated close to Dayton, Ohio. We moved when I was 11 and haven’t been back in a very long time. From what I understand the town is suffering with job loss and many folks having moved out of the area. I found a ds106 assignment that asks you to create a postcard of where you come from. I had no idea how important this assignment would become for me this evening.

I apologize for the large size of this file but I wanted to have some motion to my image so animated gif it is, and it’s a big one. I happened to find a video of someone driving through Fairborn on Youtube. To you this moving image will mean very little, to me it’s my childhood and I can’t look at it without a wave of emotion coming over me.

2011: A Mutual Collaborative

I got MacGuffin fever- it might be this ds106 semester’s animated gif?

We all know that collaboration is the way to go, right? We all hold hands, go off to northern canada, and sing tra-la-la-la? ;-)

It’s 2011, a ds106 Odyssey! BA….. DA….. DA DA
