ds106 ‘Make Noise from a Normal Sample’ #2

I recently joined ds106 as an open participant, whilst conducting a very small scale micro-ethnographic study of ds106 as part of the Education and Digital Cultures (EDC) course (#mscedc).

This is my second try at Make Noise from a Normal Sample.

I recorded the original myself on my phone (although technically it’s kind of a sample of a sample)…can you guess what it might be?

ds106 ‘Make Noise from a Normal Sample’ #1

I recently joined ds106 as an open participant, whilst conducting a very small scale micro-ethnographic study of ds106 as part of the Education and Digital Cultures (EDC) course (#mscedc).

I’m new to all this, but trying my hand at a few of the assignments, such as Make Noise from a Normal Sample.

I recorded the original sample myself on my phone…can you guess what it might be?

Make Noise from A Normal Sample

For 3 stars: Make Noise!! The title is pretty self explanitory. Take a recognizable song or sound, and then turn it into a completely unrecognizable sound. For example, take a dog barking and make it sound like tv static. This can be accomplished using any DAW (digital audio workspace, for those unaware) or some online audio editor.

Make Noise from a Normal Sample

I made this sample without listening to it first. I just started changing things to make it a more unique sound.

In order of what I did:

  1. Increased the sound
  2. Moved the toggle more to the left ear
  3. Generated chirp
  4. Changed the rhythm track
  5. The tempo from 120 to 169.0 beats per min
  6. Decreased swing amount to -0.05
  7. MIDI pitch to 65
  8. This did nothing
  9. Changed the bass and treble
  10. Played around with the compressor
  11. Now it sounds like an ocean
  12. Woo

Make Noise!

I chose the song “The Chair” by George Strait. I used the platform Audacity to mess with the song. I went under effects and used distortion, phaser, fade in, fade out, etc. It was neat listening to the different changes applied. This is the original link for this assignment. This assignment was also 3 1/2 stars.

Normal Noise

To do this assignment, I took a sound track that I had recorded from the Jepson Fountain and turned it into a robot sound.

I thought working with a continuous sound would be hard to distort but it was a lot simpler than I had expected. I changed the tempo, pitch, and speed, added an echo sound, and did a small noise reduction.

Distorting a Noise to Sound Like Lasers

For this assignment I was instructed to create or manipulate an audio file in a way that would distort it, basically making it sound like something totally and completely different. I was watching Star Wars on Netflix while looking through assignments and while watching I was listening to the sound effects that really enhance the scenes. While listening I had the idea that I could create a similar style of sound using logic pro. For this I used a speech sample and then using the different tools on Logic I completely distorted it into sounding like a laser or some form of space tool. This wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be since I already had experience with audio distortion and logic and it was basically like riding a bike, you never forget. Overall I am happy with the outcome and might even use it in the sound effect story assignment. Hope you enjoy this awesome laser noise.

ds 106: Story time fun time (3.5 stars)

There are a lot of options in regards to telling a story. I could talk about anything, tell any sort of tale for this. What really inspired me was the idea of continuing off of a gif assignment I had completed last week. The story revolves around a monstrous dog like creature running rampant in a city that’s been sealed in, told vaguely through a corrupt automated message. I wanted it to be unnerving and hard to not pay attention to, like watching the news when something horrible is on. When you don’t want to see it yet you can’t look away.

I used a handful of tools to complete this assignment. The main piece of software used was Audacity, which is free and very easy to use. I compiled all my audio samples onto it and used it to add various effects to said samples like reverb, phasing and distortion. The second most important program used was an online text to speech generator called voicemaker. I inputted the string of text I wanted into it and simply downloaded it after finding a voice setting I liked. Finally, I used an online web sequencer called Modbox to grab a handful of white noise samples. I don’t think they were all that important to the process, but they definitely added a lot of ambiance and tension in the spots I wanted.

Stacy’s Trip

Original Assignment … 3 Stars:

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/tell-a-story/

This assignment was to “We’ve all had to create characters, now it is time to tell their stories. Tell a story pertaining to your character. This can be either from your character’s point of view or it can be told from the perspective of a narrator. Record yourself telling the story and add sound effects or music to the background for further detail and enhanced storytelling. Try to make the story between 2 to 5 minutes long. Be creative!”

For this it felt pretty easy to create because I made up a story pretty fast. Used Audacity to record myself then used Freesounds.org to add some background music to it.

I used Character named Stacy to describe what has happened in my life recently. This summer was supposed to go to Greece with my family and friends. Sadly that didn’t happen because of COVID. Which was fine but I was very upset.

Instead, my parents turned it into a fun summer vacation using the money for Greece to travel to different beach houses to see different places. Although it wasn’t Greece it was still fun exciting, and gave you the thrill of doing something so new!
