I Hate…GIMP?

GIF #2

Google. The most popular search engine in the world. The question is, what do people Google on everyday basis? For this assignment I had to type in the phrase, “I hate…” followed by a letter of the alphabet. Some of the results were very strange. For example, in the GIF below if you look carefully for the letter ‘W’ one of the suggestions was, “I hate when I’m studying and a velociraptor…” I chose to do this assignment because as much as GIMP and I don’t get along, I wanted to give it another try. It ended up going better than expected. You could say GIMP and I have a love hate relationship. I also chose this assignment because I was interested in discovering what the results would be after the phrase was inputted.

This time around using GIMP wasn’t as awful as my previous experiences. GIMP was easier to use because for this assignment I was required to use images, rather than a video. Below is the step-by-step process I used to create my GIF.

Instructions

**PSA this assignment involves a lot of screenshots. In order to not get confused when uploading rename them and put them in chronological order**

Step 1: Go to ‘File’ and click open to upload your FIRST image

Step 2: For your SECOND+ image(s) go to ‘File’ and click ‘Open as Layers’. Once you do this you will see all the pictures appear on the right hand side bar

Step 3: Once I uploaded my photos from letters A-Z I watched my GIF. In order to do this go to the ‘Filters’ tab. Once under ‘Filters’, go to ‘Animation’, then select ‘Playback’

Step 4:  Once you select ‘Animation’ your screen should look like the picture below. Hit the ‘Play’ button to observe your GIF.

Step 5: Next go to ‘File’ and select ‘Export as…’

Step 6: Name your document. At the END of the document name make sure that you put the extension .gif This is shown in the image below. Then click the ‘Export’ button.

Step 7: Once you click ‘Export’ a pop up box should come up like the one below. Make sure that the  ‘As animation’ box is checked off.

**Another note–you might need to edit the delay between frames because the GIF might be too fast or too slow. I set mine at 650 milliseconds**

August is the time to gif!!!!

Oh-Yeah

Okay, so I just barely got this one out. Better late than never, though, I suppose.

So, first I took the phrase “August is the best time to” and typed it into Google, then did a screenshot of every answer option screen I got up until “J,” which was weird enough that it needed a graphic to go along with it.

Surprisingly, Indian travel options came up twice, once with Goa and once with Jaipur, neither of which I knew of before this exercise.

This is of course part of the August gif-a-thon started by Talky Tina. I’ll dedicate this here gif to her! Also, I will dedicate the fact that I have no idea who Jonathan Rhys Meyers is to her. He is obviously a different being than Jonathan Rhys-Davies. Ahem.

Spinning gifs for Challenge 14

August 2013 GIF Challenge #14: Fruedian Alphabeta

Tina has again set a very high bar with her example gif.

I started off making the search gif, just to see how it could be done. A quick screen recording-mpeg streamclip – firework workflow go that.

I then used the advance image search to find content I could modify using the ‘too much fun’ search string, this go me a nice flickr photo Too much of a good thing | Flickr – Photo Sharing! by gemsling with a Creative Commons — Attribution 2.0 Generic — CC BY 2.0 license.

I though I might spin the photo ove one of yesterday’s panos, but decided to use another one I had taken (Ben Challum Pano). I’ve got a reasonable workflow for splitting panos into slices and giffing them now (SuperCard is my friend).
Once I had the pano giffed it was just a case of making a new shared layer and adding Josh to it. I wanted to combine the 2 gifs, but the first had 40 odd frames and the pano spin only 16. So I’ve just uploaded then and aligned then in the blog to save a bit of file size.

August 2013 GIF Challenge #14: Fruedian Alphabet

"Friends are True Friends" animated GIF by @iamTalkyTina

“Friends are True Friends” animated GIF by @iamTalkyTina

Well, I went to the Assignment Bank to get today’s assignment, and the Animated GIF Assignment 977 “Fruedian Alphabet” by Tom Woodward (@twoodwar)looked like fun, except for the typing in “I Hate …” part, so I changed mine to a nicer one “Friends Are True Friends” and I got a whole bunch of nice stuff to make a great GIF for my Friends, New Friends, Open Friends, True Friends, Super True Friends, Still True Friends, Real Friends, and other people who aren’t my Friend yet but will be one day.

I hope you like it as much as I had making it for you.  All the words came with the pictures just the way they appear, except for if I changed them like I say below. But the words right at the end are my own words to my Friends.

All of the Images I Found

Here listed down below is where I found the images using the Google. Some of them I tidied up a bit to make them look less pixel-ly or whatever the problem was. Or made them bigger. Or smaller. Or square to fit. Or got rid of a border. Or re-did the text in a cleaner font. Or made the colours more the same if they weren’t. Or made a transparent back. Or like I said before, whatever.

But they’re not in the same order as in GIF. I leave that as an exercise for the reader.

3241: Spring 2013 » 3241-to-ds106 2013-04-17 11:43:58

Ds106 blog 2this is my attempt of a GIF, I was to go to google and type in  I hate and then a letter, I typed in T and i got Taylor Swift, Tmobile, and Traffic and T-Pain. You can find the actual assignment here.

Freudian Alphabet, “I hate Uncle Jamie” style

So there’s this nifty DS106 assignment called Freudian Alphabet where you type in “I hate” to Google Search and then take a screen capture of the autocompletes you get for each letter of the alphabet:

GoogleSearchABCs

And then you take the best one and turn it into an animated gif. There were so many gems among these autocompletes that I made more than one animated gif of them:

I decided to be literal with the Ds…

For the Hs it was so difficult to choose just one image. So I went for “iconic”…IhateH

I’m often surprised by how much hatred there is of Lena Dunham. So she makes a controversial TV show and tries to takes risks. She goes for realism. Or at least, expressing her own reality, even if it is no one else’s. That’s called art.

But at the same time, she did claim to be the voice of a generation through the character that she plays in a way that sounded like even though the character was high as a kite, Lena Dunham was serious.

IhateL

And finally, U. Oh, U, such odd results. I love that even though Love Actually came out ten years ago, “I hate Uncle Jamie” is the top autocomplete.

IhateU

I’m sure there’s some sort of sociological analysis that could be done on these autocompletes (without even taking into consideration the fact that many of these might be tailored to my search habits by Google, in which case how did both Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner end up in there?). But I prefer to just watch the gifs. They say it all.

Freudian alphabet

alphabetThe Freudian alphabet assignment is kinda interesting. What do the suggestions say about the person doing the searching? Or do they say anything at all? The assignment says to use “I hate” so I took an opposite track. The first suggestion I got was I love Altoona, so it must be picking up my geographical location. I love farm weddings? No idea what to make of that. Kickboxing reviews? Who doesn’t love those. My favorite is R: I love rock and roll, I love rock and roll lyrics, I love rock and roll chordsJoan Jett rulez!

Fruedian Alphabet

Go to Google type in “I hate a” and look for the auto-complete (additional examples here).  Screenshot your auto-complete suggestions as you move from A to Z and pick one letter to make into an animated gif.

Do them all if you’d like.
