ds 106: Play DJ & Make A Song (4.5 stars)

I saw this assignment and immediately knew that I wanted to do it. I was inspired by a prompt from a discord server to “Introduce the listener to a space adventure”. I used an online sequencer called Modbox to make this song, which gives me all sorts of fun chiptune and retro sound fonts. I added a lot of white noise to the drums and background to give it some atmosphere and space, as well as a decent amount of reverb to the whole track. The process took me a lot longer than expected, and I wish I started working on it earlier in the week.

My First Song: Revisited

For my second rework assignment in DS106, I wanted to revisit the song I made for the “Play DJ & Make A Song” assignment. I stated in the original that I created this song using GarageBand after it came pre-installed on my new iPad. Since then I have bought a new keyboard case and a stylus for future art and animation projects in Procreate, however the stylus also came in handy when moving around sound files in GarageBand. I had previously stated at the time I made the first song that I had no experience with the program. I still have very little experience with it, but I’ve managed to figure out enough so create a remix of my original song that is over three minutes long!

I spent over two hours working on this song, because I had to figure out how to edit sound files without totally destroying them. The basic idea of the song is still the same. I wanted the song to be able to be played continuously on a loop without the listening knowing where it begins and ends. I was inspired to to this after watching a video (that I cannot find anymore, sadly) on how Nintendo’s music for their games and consoles has that same looping quality.

Since I had already made the song, all I had to do was cut and paste sections. I spent a lot of time just listening to it, trying to figure out which instruments sounded good together. I wanted it to have an intro and and outro, and used the guzheng (which is that Japanese twangy sound all throughout the song) as the basis, since I thought it was the most recognizable sound. From there I introduced bass and drums before moving into the synthesizers. There is one section of the song that only has the guzheng and drums playing before moving back into the song. I did this to give it some variety before continuing onto the outro.

Please give the remix a listen! I’d suggest listening to it on a loop. Like before, I experimented with the premade instrumental sets in GarageBand, playing it by ear to create an interesting piece. It has all the same elements as the original, but is now more spaced out and has layers and sections where it sounds slightly different. Please tell me what you think in a comment down below! I’ll also include a link to the original assignment if anyone wants to take a look at that!

My New Single: Dynamite

This week, for one of my audio assignments I chose to Play DJ and Make A Song. Music has always been a part of my life and ever since I was a young kid I’ve always wanted to write and produce my own song. DISCLAIMER: This song is by no means a serious attempt at songwriting or producing for me but I did love making it and had a lot of fun constructing the beat and writing the lyrics for it – even though you can barely hear them, sorry.

With a catchy, 1980s-style beat, and lyrics to match, I wanted to attempt to capture a little bit of the era in my song. I love electric guitar melodies and punchy drums so I made sure to incorporate those into it.

I first started by opening GarageBand on my Mac and creating a new project. I started off by playing with some digital instruments like pianos and synthesizers but nothing was flowing. I then googled some ways to make simple song beats and learned that GarageBand has a built in looping feature with tons of pre-recorded soundbites. These perfectly timed loops featured guitars, drums, pianos, bass, and everything else!

First, I started with a good drum beat by searching 1980s in the search bar. Once I found a drum beat I liked i dragged it onto the timeline and made it loop forever. After that, I found a couple of cool old school electric guitar riffs and melodies and dragged those onto the timeline as well. I staggered every new instrumental loop, coming in 4-bars after the next until all three were playing. Then, I wrote some lyrics, trying to use the 1980s party scene as a theme. After writing some lyrics, I recorded my voice into GarageBand and added it a couple bars in after the final instrument started playing. I made my two verses repeat twice and voila, a finished novice-piece!

After realizing how many amazing beats and sounds are preloaded into GarageBand, I will definitely be using it on my own personal time to try and make some cool music to jam out to.

Funky Squirrel

With audio programs, making a song from scratch suddenly becomes really, really easy. Programs like GarageBand come with their own loop selection, but if you are using a different program, try downloading bass riffs or back beats and go to town! Or download beats from Youtube- wherever. The challenge is to make a song without recording anything yourself.

Assignment Bank- Audio Assignments

I had a lot of fun making this song in Garageband on my laptop. I just chose some funky beats and put them together in a groovy way.

I used the Apple loops in the program to make this song. It was helpful that I found a collection of loops that contained different instruments and connected together well. It took me a little longer than I thought to make the song, but I am happy about how it turned out.

I have used Garageband in the past to do this kind of task for fun, however, it had been a few years since I made songs with Apple Loops. It did take me some time to even find the loops because the program had been updated significantly in the last couple of years.

The song uploaded to SoundCloud is not the first version that I came up with. I did not save the first version as a new song, rather I just deleted what I did not like and added the different elements to create the song you heard. The introduction of the song is the same, but I changed everything else. I wish I saved the first version as a separate file before I made any major changes.

For the song title, I just decided that the music was pretty funky, and the theme of my websites is squirrels, so there’s my title.

Guess I’m Done Hoarding my Music Creations Now…

Play DJ & Make a Song

I’ve created several songs, but never posted any publicly. Here’s the first! Let’s make it go viral (psych) – I hope you enjoy:

Behind the Process

Not the first song I’ve made, but probably one of the quickest I’ve turned out. I used FL Studio to produce it, and I can highlight some steps I took to complete this project:

  1. Choose emotion to convey (wonder/power)
  2. Write piano melody around chosen emotion
  3. Layer and play around with some synths
  4. What does the sound remind me of at this point? Looking at the stars…
  5. Googled: Poems about stars (found this poem)
  6. Found this verbal reading of said poem, down-pitched it, and added reverb
  7. Importing, effects, editing, and final touches
  8. Bon appetit, that’s a spicy accumulation of noises going into my ear holes

Audio Assignment (total of 5 Stars)

Above is the media file to a song that I mashed up from a few of my favorite soundtracks on Logic Pro X on my MacBook Pro. It was Play DJ and Make A Song on the DS106 Assignment Bank. When I was making this song this week on my computer, I wanted to have an apocalyptic theme in mind, so I thought that the song mimicked the cold hearted nature of the climax in the movie iRobot, when the robots took over the city. Play DJ & Make a Song

Come See my Laptop, Live!

Assignment: Play DJ & Make a Song: 4 Stars

Music has gone from being created by instruments making natural air vibrations that sooth the ears to living entirely inside the world of a computer. Music in today’s day and age is primarily produced in music production applications on a computer. Lyrics have come and gone from music. A lot of popular rappers do not even attempt to say words anymore. In fact after listening to an evolution of rap video it’s apparent that rap has really gone down hill lately. I wanted to explore what some of the DJ’s who produce this music would be like in real life. The character in the video is a cross between an arrogant condescending DJ and a Donald Trumpian politician.

Scientists say that the human brain is programmed to create, listen to, and respond to many different types and sounds of music. Civilizations from around the world, including primitive cultures have all produced music. Music is very prominent in the Bible, for example, King David was well known for his interest in the harp or lyre. Genesis 4:21 describes Jubal as the inventor of musical instruments.

As times have progressed, music has progressed with it. It has become more diverse, more ubiquitous and more sophisticated. Yet the origins of music are always present in the rhythms and melodies of music. The image below reflects this progression.

Music Evolution

Music composition has undergone incredible transformation from spontaneous music to careful orchestration. In classical periods of music, there was mathematical precision to much of music, especially the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Even the appearance of music on the page can be beautiful.

Synthesizers were elaborate electronic devices that created modern electronic music. It is hard to trace the history of synthesizer because the instrument, if you could call a synthesizer an instrument, is not well defined. The first synthesizer came out in the mid 19th century. Modern day synthesizers like in the image below began being produced in the 1970’s. Complex circuitry drove these complex instruments. They did not exist solely within the confines of a computer program. They were actual physical machines.

Then there is modern computer software using standard computer platforms that bring music creation to the desktop and makes it available to every school child or adult. Garageband is a particular favorite. It is incredible to note that in the last few years concerts and even entire music festivals are performed without a single instrument. Music made only on computers attract thousands of young music fans for Electronic music. The meme below shows how thousands of young music fans flock to these types of concerts simply to hear a computer play music.

Finally This “Epic Rap Battle of History” between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Skrillex plays on this enormous difference between classic composers and the new age electronic and dubstep artists.

Finally it’s time to see what the jerky DJ’s, some of which I assume are good people, who create this type of music would be like in real life.

Presented below is my Play DJ & Make a song production.

Remember this is only a character :).

Big Bad

The site TV Tropes defines a Big Bad as “the cause of all bad happenings in a story.”

Basically it’s that one bad guy who continuously shows up. It’s that one person that ruins all of the main character’s plans.

This idea was the inspiration behind my song created for this assignment (2 stars).

The instructions for this assignment where to create a song without recording anything yourself.

I saw this assignment and immediately knew it was for me. Rewind to last semester (Spring 2015), I took a MIDI music class. What’s MIDI? Click here. This link explains it better than I ever could.

But in simpler terms its the crossroads of computers and music. It’s what’s required to create music digitally.

During this class, I learned the ins and outs of two music making programs: Logic Pro X and Ableton live. Both caused me much trouble and heartache in the beginning but thats probably because I was too stubborn to read instructions. Ha ha. If you’re interested in learning these programs, don’t be like me. There are plenty of resources on the web. Especially Youtube. Go to Youtube.

So how did I create my song? Logic Pro X. How? I opened up a new project. Then enabled loops. After that I started actually making the song, which was basically just me listening to different loops for an hour and half.

Eventually I found a drum track I liked, and from there I started layering different loops on to it. Included in my song, there are three different drum tracks, a bass track and some piano.
For the drum and bass tracks, I duplicated them to make the sound fuller. The end is probably my favorite, when it’s just the bass and the drum fill. I tried to make it really intense.

I mentioned above how my inspiration was the big bad trope but it really goes further than that. For example, When you play a video game, and this type of character appears theres usually a change in music. You also know you’re in trouble at this point and should probably save the game. The music is such an important part of setting the mood for the bad guy.

Without music, I’m sure who this big bad is would still be obvious, but I don’t think it would be as intense as it is with it. Music really has a way to evoke certain emotions that are stronger than what you’d usually feel.

I actually did have a certain big bad in mind while creating this. I’ve been plotting out a story for a bit and I envisioned him as I made this. I’m picturing him facing off against one of my heroes. Kinda like a stare down before the battle.

Considering most of my plotting has been written or drawn, making music for a character was interesting change of pace. I feel like I might have managed to develop him on a deeper level through this.

Make a Song Assignment

So I decided to do the make a song assignment. Here is a little 80’s themed track I put together using FL studio. All custom Synths

Asian Persuasion

For this assignment, I had to make an attempt in producing a song without recording my own audio, which believe or not actually was a challenge for me as I have recorded most of my audio projects so far. With not being able to record my own music, I decided to use Soundation
