Daily Sounds

For this assignment, I went through my day and took recordings of sounds that I heard.

First thing in the morning my dogs eat so I recorded that. Then I recorded a bit of the show Mysteries at the Museum because that is what is normally on the television. I then went to the farmers market where I recorded my walking through it. Once I was finished, I got into my car and had the air conditioning on full blast. Once I got home I put my clothes into the dryer and recorded that sound.

Once I had all of these recording, I went to Audacity and converted them into one file.

Do You Hear What I Hear – A Day in My Life

To make this sound bite I use my iPhone’s voice memo application. I played the various recordings into the microphone I have attached my computer and then manipulated each of the recordings using my new best friend, Audacity.

This recording starts with my daily 6 AM dog walk.  Nelly, my youngest saluki, likes to go out on the lead so whether it is raining, snowing, or just plain hot and miserable I get to go out with her. Because we live out in the country there are always lots of critters around. In the fall we have deer on our property. Our deer are quite brazen and make for some very lively and exciting walks. After their morning breakfast the pups, as you can hear in the Sound Cloud recording, take great joy in letting me know when there are squirrels and other intruders in the front yard.

The recording ends with me filling the gas tank on my lawn mower and then mowing my lawn. Because of the rain, and classes it has been tough to find the time for this chore. By the time I got to it this week the grass had grown to almost 6 inches in length. I will not let that happen again.

A Day in the Life

On her days off these are the sounds Alex Bercek hears in the span of half of her day.  She first wakes up to her alarm and makes her way to the kitchen for a bowl of lucky charms.  From there she makes her way to the gym where she boxes for an hour, mostly for fun but also because she needs to stay in shape. She walks home and takes a quick shower and listens to the TV while she get dressed.  Once she is ready she’ll pack her bag and hop on her bike to speed to the nearest Starbucks where she will brief herself on the coming week and prepare her mind for the blind date she has later, because why not right?

So in order to get the sounds I wanted a used a combination of the things I had around me to record and then youtube.  The alarm and cereal box sounds came from what I had at the moment and the rest I typed into google and found the sound that best suited what I was looking for.  I didn’t want to get into the whole day because I think the sounds would have been a little redundant, I think a glimpse for now will do.

What my day sounds like..

For this assignment (worth 3 stars) I had to record sounds of what I’ve heard throughout my day. There were some that I wish I would have recorded in time (boom of the quarry near my house was atrocious today).

For the process of this, I started with my iPhone 7. This is what I used to record some of my sounds (I cheated for 2 sounds on my “day” because I couldn’t get a clear recording. For this I used this website.) After I compiled a days worth of sounds, I uploaded them to audacity and used a lot of their editing tools to lump them together and transition them to one another. For more detailed information on the editing done here, please see my blog post: A walk in the park.

Narrated: 1. wake up to my alarm. 2. hear the sounds of my 2 dogs, 2 kittens, and 2 birds (only thing missing is my horse). 3. shower. 4. get in the car. 5. spend time at UMW. 6. have lunch. 7. go to work. 8. have dinner. 9. go to bed.

How do you spend your day and what do you hear throughout it? Hear mine below.

The Sounds of my Morning

Original assignment may be found here (2.5 Stars)

The assignment tasks you with recording different noises you her throughout the day. The noises can be whatever you want. I decided to my Sunday morning routine. First I’ll explain how I did the assignment. Using my iPhone 6, I opened up the Voice Memo app. I recorded four different noises/files. I uploaded the four different files onto my computer. In Audacity, I clicked on File and then Import. I selected the four files. Once the files were imported, select the Time Shift tool. This allows you to move the different files. I wanted each file to overlap for one second with each other. Once I shifted the files by clicking on them I exported the recording. Select File and then Export Audio. Once that was done it was saved as one file instead of four. To finish, upload the file to SoundCloud.

I recorded my first noise as I walked down the stairs into the family room. I do not remember what was on TV, my guess is the Golf Channel. The next sound is in my kitchen. I tried to record the sound of bacon sizzling in the pan. The third sound is the sound of coffee pouring into a mug from a Keurig. The last sound is from the Purple Martin bird house on my parents property. The sounds of morning are my favorite. I believe they tend to be more relaxing.

A Day in the Life

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Record glimpses of the different sounds you hear throughout the day, whether it be busy street noises, people talking, birds chirping, etc. and compile it into a single audio clip on Sound Cloud.  Use an audio software such as Audacity to put them all in one. (2.5 Stars)

This was an interesting assignment that also ended up being very time consuming.  I recorded different sounds I heard throughout my day yesterday using my phone because that is what I have easily accessible.  Once I got all of the sounds uploaded onto my Desktop I used Audacity to combine all the different files into one single file. I varied the duration that some sounds are played to show how much of my day is consumed with that sound or activity.  As a result typing with music playing (what I am currently doing) is a large piece of A Day in the Life of me.

I imported all of the different sounds of my day into Audacity in chronological order so that it would be easier to keep everything in order.

I started off by importing my morning alarm into Audacity. I also trimmed down the alarm to only use the part I wanted by highlighting (seen below in dark grey) the part I wanted and using ctrl-t to trim off everything else.

I then started importing and layering in more sounds and trimming them down (described above) to be the correct length.

In order to move sounds to the correct starting and ending point you utilize the Time Shift Tool marked on the tool bar with an arrow.

As I added more and more sounds to the clip I had to adjust the sounds level on some of different audio clips.  This can be done with the slide bar to the left of the audio file.

As more and more files were added in I collapsed the different clips by hitting the up arrow so I would be able to see more at once.

Once all the clips were in the correct place and I liked how it sounded I exported the Audio to my desktop and uploaded it to SoundCloud prior to embedding it in this post.

Who else has a day that sounds like this?  I’m thinking a ton of people who have office jobs have a pretty similar day.  I’m also pretty interested to see if there are any sounds that you can’t figure out.

My Ears Are Bleeding

The Work Itself

I completed this assignment by using Garageband. I compiled and put together a collection of sounds I hear everyday. This audio assignment is rated 3 stars and is titled “Do You Hear What I Hear?”. The instructions are to “record glimpses of the different sounds you hear throughout the day, whether it be busy street noises, people talking, birds chirping, etc. and compile it into a single audio clip on SoundCloud.”

The Story Behind The Story

Everyday, I hear the same sounds throughout my day. My alarm clock goes off every morning. I then take a shower so I hear the water running. I live right off William St. so I hear cars constantly. Once I arrive on campus, I hear people talking to another, as well people texting including myself. Once I get home, I turn on the television. It seems like I hear and see an old spice commercial every time I watch television.

The Process, Narrated

I went to YouTube and searched sounds of an alarm clock, shower, cars, people talking, texting, and an Old Spice commercial. I converted each youtube clip to an MP3, which I then downloaded. I dragged each individual download into Garageband. I trimmed each sound and organized the sounds as I hear them throughout my day. Here are some photos of the process.

Do You Here What I Hear?

For this audio assignment out of the DS106 Assignment Bank we were supposed to record glimpses of the different sounds that you  hear throughout the day.

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/do-you-hear-what-i-hear/

Using the program Audacity, which I downloaded for this class, I created about a two minute recording of sounds you would hear around my house in the morning, including to the point when I get in the car and leave for work. In this recording you can hear sounds like an alarm clock, dogs barking, the T.V., and music from the radio.

Here you can see where two clips of sound were put together using the Audacity program.

Things I Hear Daily

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Description of Assignment: Record glimpses of the different sounds you hear throughout the day, whether it be street noises, people talking, birds chirping, etc. and compile it into a single audio clip on Sound Cloud. Use an audio software such as Audacity to put them all in one.

In order to complete this assignment I had to download Audacity. Once I downloaded Audacity I was able to select the different sounds I wanted and add them to my audio. After that was done I was able to combine all of the audios into one audio by copy and pasting them at the end of the first track so they would play one right after another. I have provided screenshots below to show you how I did this.

I chose this Audio Assignment because when I read the description of the assignment I thought it would be really cool to create something that has all the sounds I normally hear daily. There are so many sounds I hear throughout the day but I chose a few sounds that I hear just about everyday.

The first sound I chose was my professor talking. I chose this because I am currently taking summer classes so his voice is something I hear everyday. Even if it’s not that particular class/professor, I am hearing some professor talk almost every day. The second sound I chose was country music. I chose this sound because I definitely hear music everyday. Whether it is in my car on the way to class or the gym or whether it’s just playing in my house while I am cleaning. The third sound I chose was the TV playing. I chose this sound because although I do not watch a lot of TV, it is something I hear daily and something that I enjoy hearing. The fourth sound I chose was my ringtone. Our phones play a huge role in our lives these days and I know I hear my ringtone at least once a day, even if its not mine, someone else has the exact same ringtone (classic iPhone ringtone). The fifth sound and last sound I chose was my text tone. With the day and age we are in, it is pretty common to hear your text tone not only everyday but multiple times a day.

This particular Audio Assignment is related to the concept of digital storytelling. This is because it is a sound clip that tells a story of all the sounds I hear throughout the day, just about everyday and says what exactly the sounds are.
