I Bid You A Fond Farewell.

In this three-star assignment, Cat, only mere months after her father’s premature passing, decides to do some spring cleaning and sell the piano that contains fond memories.

This was the first Audio assignment that I didn’t premeditate and script out; I just let my thoughts flow and recorded them as they came. It actually proved to turn out a lot better this way when I didn’t think about it and just kind of became Cat! I also used this a redemptory assignment towards my Sound Effects story, which pretty much totally blew because I DID try to script and plan it out. I’m not sure which method is better overall for me, but it’s good to switch it up every once and a while and create beyond your confines.

All the background sound effects other than my voice (yes, that is me singing at the end and YES, I am sorry for making your ears bleed) were found on freesound.org. It was totally unplanned, but I thought it was really cool how Cat’s descriptions totally synced up with the church bells chiming three times … almost as if they are tolling for her father, and she’s thinking about how she’s essentially literally letting him go. And at the end (maybe a flashback, maybe in the present?) you here the far off voice of her forlorn soul:

You will always be

My necessity;

I’d be lost without

You.

This was a fun one to create. I used the sound recorder on my computer and a basic headset. However, unlike other recordings, I grabbed my brother to assist me with this one while I was at home. After going over the assignment, he was ready to help.

The idea for the product actually came from Futurama, specifically from the episode where the head of Planet Express was attempting to sell the company on the stock market. With that idea, we just needed to be ridiculous and make it sound entertaining. After I told my brother about the idea, he laughed and we went over some quick things before recording.

I had a lot of fun with this one and really suggest that you all try it out!

Let me know what you think!

Salesman vs. Henry Bemis

“Welcome to the Swap Shop! Try to sell the most interesting item you can think of! Go on and on about it, be silly and have fun with it! Have a friend be the radio dj ready for the call in and ask you lots of questions about your item. [You can also ask yourself questions too--just try to change your voice].”

After losing the only glasses Henry Bemis owns a travelings saleman approach Mr. Bemis…

I recorded this through my Galaxy 3gs. The 3gs records in a .3ga format so I had to convert it to mp3. Luckily there is a site to convert everything nowadays. If you are a galaxy owner then this site might come in handy to you. I did my editing on audacity, added the opening theme then BAM! There you have it.

I surprisingly enjoyed this assignment. Everything from writing the script to recording it. I hope you enjoyed listening.

Worth: 3 1/2 stars

Assignment Idea #1

SWAP SHOP!
Yes, I grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. One of the local radio stations always had this thing called ‘Swap Shop’ where people would call in and sell their goodies or whatever. So I decided, HELLO! perfect assignment. I recorded myself in audacity as both the radio personality ‘Brad’ and the caller. I went to generate-> change pitch and changed it to a negative 11, to get the Brad voice deep enough. Then I recorded myself on a separate track (go to track–>add new) and was the caller. I decided not to mess with an accent for it, although that might be a suggestion to make it better! I went with selling a dog, only I’m complaining about the dog the entire time–not usually a good idea when you’re trying to sell something. But that’s the magic of the swap shop! I stitched my tracks together using the time shift tool and voila! Presto!

Also, maybe it should be worth two stars because it does require some editing work and pitch changes.

(also the image of the swap shop on the assignment page is taken from the WESR (said weezer) website–the originators of the swap shop)
