Random Song Mashup:

This assignment is similar to ones I have done in the past, but this particular one was much more interesting to create. It asked us to mashup two completely different songs. I decided to hit shuffle on my Spotify songs and I got Bob Marley, and a spanish song featuring Demi Lavato. These two songs are both uplifting and positivity and the collaboration creates an overall positive listen. I used the mashup website called mix.dj and then used an online link converter to make it accessible to listen to. It was really fun to mess around with the fade and balance for these two songs to make it clear what two songs are present.

DRAKE FT LINKIN PARK

I made a mashup with the instrumental of Drake’s “Headlines” and the vocals of Linkin Park’s “Numb”. I did this using audacity.

Red Hot Chili Peppers ft. Kool G Rap

In this blog I’m going to be telling you about my time completing the Music Mashup assignment. I found this assignment looking through the Audio Assignments bank on the ds106 website.

When I was looking through the different audio assignments the ‘Music Mashup’ caught my eye quite well due to having an interest in music. You would have thought in the audio assignment bank their would be a lot of great music assignments but a lot of the assignments were to do with sound effects or stripping down songs. The music ‘mashup’ assignment is perfect for me as I enjoy many genres of music. The main assignment requirement was to “create an audio mashup with 2 very distinct songs“. This is another task I really like because there are so many ways of making your own ‘mashup’ unique and creative. Everybody has different taste in music so when combining 2 songs together there are that many songs that nobody will choose the same 2 songs, which helps showcase everybody’s own creativeness.

When I looked into ways of mashing 2 different songs together there are many methods of doing this. The most common song ‘mashup’ is to combine two songs together and remove the instrumental from one song and remove the lyrics from the other, then to combine them. Another way to do it is to merge both songs together then set the lyrics to play in separate bursts or just swap choruses. I decided to take my own approach after listening to another d1so6 user’s example it is very hard to ‘mashup’ two songs and make it sound like they fit together and don’t clash.

So the way I decided to make a ‘mashup’ that actually sounds good was by going onto YouTube and finding an instrumental. Fortunately I already had a great instrumental in mind. The instrumental I chose is a piece of music by The Red Hot Chili Peppers called Pretty Little Ditty. The next step I took was to find a song with lyrics that would fit great over Pretty Little Ditty. As Pretty Little Ditty is such a fast paced instrumental it caused me some trouble finding a song that would keep up with it. As rap is generally fast paced lyrics is was a no-brainer to find a rap song. After looking through many rap songs I found it was best to get a rap acapella. The rap I finally found is called Fast Life by an American rapper called Kool G Rap. I knew these songs would work together as I was playing them both at the same time on YouTube to get an understanding.
Once I knew I was going to use both of these songs I found on YouTube I needed to download them.converts1

The way I downloaded them to my documents was by using a website called convert2mp3.net to allow me to take the audio from the YouTube video without the video, as well as having my own copy. The way you use this website is by copy and pasting the link of the video you want to download into convert bar, then just press convert as seen above. After choosing what format you want to convert it to (I chose mp3) just press download and then save it in your documents.

Once I had both the songs saved as mp3’s in my documents it was time for the editing process. I decided to edit on Adobe Audition although the brief recommended Audacity they are both very similar and offer the same services.

deleteaudio

The image above shows what it looks like when importing a single audio file into Adobe Audition. The file imported on the image is the rap acapella, as you can see in the image there is a white part in the audio, which is highlighted. This is because I am about to delete it as there is a blank pause in the audio, you can tell this because there is no waveforms in the highlighted part.
3db13db2

Above is a before and after shot of the rap acapella audio being set to -3db. The image on the right shows the waveforms to be smaller this is because it means the audio has been set not to peak above a certain volume so its not too loud and more equal. This process was done for the rap acapella file and the instrumental audio file.loweredvol

In the centre of screenshot above shows you that I have set the instrumental audio to -10.5, The reason I lowered the volume is because I wanted the lyrics to be the main part of the song and have the instrumental to be a nice sound-bed underneath to compliment the pace and lyrics.

finaltrimThis screenshot shows the final editing process after trimming down and equalising both the audio files. The upper more illuminated layer is the instrumental, and you can see it is placed to the right slightly. This is because I want the rap acapella to start first then have the instrumental to kick in a few seconds after, as you will be able to hear in the audio player. The instrumental also carries on for a few seconds to ensure the song fades out and doesn’t stop abruptly.

Here you can play my music ‘mashup’ in the embedded SoundCloud player. You can also listen to this song on here on SoundCloud’s website.
Overall I’m extremely pleased with my final product, it is very different from other peoples examples. It also shows what types of music I enjoy. The process for creating the song required a lot of research and listening to different songs and finding out which songs click with each other. The editing stage was fun as I was able to combine both tracks together in the way that I liked. I would recommend this assignment to any users looking through the audio assignment bank.

Music Mashup – Toto and Darude

Assignment (3.5 stars)

For this assignment, I chose to mashup the songs Africa by Toto, and Calm Before the Storm by Darude. I chose these two songs because Calm Before the Storm is a techno song with only a few lyrics, very much unlike Africa. I thought that these two songs would make for an interesting collaboration, and my character Edward Creeper is a sucker for good music, so he was a big fan of this assignment. I had to turn down the audio somewhat in Calm Before the Storm so that the lyrics in Africa could be heard, but overall, I think this assignment went pretty well, even if the finished product doesn’t sound all that listenable.

To complete this assignment, I first downloaded these two songs into Audacity using a YouTube to MP3 converter. I then edited the songs’ lengths to make them match up, and tweaked the volume of each song. I assumed that SoundCloud would take this collaboration down for copyright issues, so I just uploaded it directly to WordPress. This was an interesting assignment, and was cool to hear how these songs work together.

Music Mashup – Follow Me to the Love

I was pretty excited when I saw this assignment! I’m not going to lie, sometime’s I feel that a lot of these audio assignments are way over my head, whether it’s ability or creativity (usually creativity). However, if you’ve been following along with my posts, you’ll see that I’m heavily immersed in the dance world here at UMW! I have recently started choreographing (yay!) which means that I needed to familiarize myself in the world of cutting music! I’m a Mac user, so naturally I initially chose to use Garageband. I have recently downloaded Audacity, and I’m starting to learn it, but for now I’m still a Garageband girl! So I guess this whole rant was to explain the fact that I’m already pretty familiar with the world of cutting/mashing up music, so naturally I was excited to mash up two different songs for this assignment!

I knew that the first song I wanted to be slow and have a beat that flows. I thought a nice flowy song would pair well with a fun hip-hop/pop song with strong beats. I went through my iTunes library to find songs that I thought would mash well. I knew instantly that I wanted “Where Is the Love” by the Black Eyed Peas. I’m a huge fan of the beat, I think it’s really strong but simple. From here, I looked for a song with a very flowy beat that would complement it. This is where things got a little tricky. I went through several different songs, such as “Bubbly” by Colbie Caillat and “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis. Both of these songs presented a beat that was very nice, slow, and smooth, however the beats of “Where Is the Love” seemed to totally overpower it. As I scrolled through some more, I found an old favorite song, and I knew that “Follow Me” by Uncle Kracker had to be the one! It presented the flowy quality that I was looking for, however was not too soft that it would be overpowered.

After I chose my songs, I opened my Garageband and imported them both in. I decided that I wanted to start with the beginning of “Follow Me” to introduce a soft but steady beat. Where the song starts to pick up is where I overlaid “Where Is the Love”. I cut out the beginning of “Where Is the Love” so it came in right on a strong beat. I thought this would bring the beat up a bunch and give it more life. I kept the volume of each track the same, because I wanted “Where Is the Love” to slightly overpower “Follow Me”, but I didn’t not need to raise its volume because it is already a much louder song. Then, I faded out “Where Is the Love” because it is much longer than “Follow Me”. I faded it out during the chorus that matched up with the last chorus of “Follow Me”. Then, I had the last bit of the mashup just play “Follow Me”, just like the beginning. After I was done editing, I exported it to my iTunes and uploaded to my Soundcloud! I hope everyone enjoys it!

“Alright, Let’s Remix This Business…”

For 3.5 stars this week, I completed the Music Mashup Assignment.  The purpose of this assignment was to take two distinct songs and mash them together.  I chose The Phoenix by Fall Out Boy, and Alles Neu by Peter Fox.  These two songs have similar intros, and I have wanted to overlay them for the longest time.  So what better time to do it then now!

Alles Neu is one of my favorite songs by Peter Fox.  He is a German artist and is also part of the group Seeed.  The Phoenix is one of my favorite songs by Fall Out Boy, off of their album titled Save Rock and Roll.  Here are the original songs:

Since The Phoenix was in M4A format, I had to install the FFmpeg Import/Export Library, in order to import that audio file.  Once both were imported, I cut, clipped, and edited both tracks until the end product was something that I liked that sounded somewhat decent!

I realized after I had mashed these two songs that they have similar themes: starting over.  The phoenix rises from the ashes, and “alles neu” translates literally to “all new.”  They were just meant to be mashed!!

The big challenge came when I tried to upload it.. SoundCloud removed the Mashup and wouldn’t let me try to upload it again, so I instead just uploaded it directly to my blog. Check it out below, and enjoy!

Remixing a song while trying to maintain my sanity

After taking several deep breaths (and surprisingly no shots) I have completed my first audio assignment.  I must say that I finally thought I was making progress in this class.  That is FALSE, it took me FIVE hours to complete this assignment.  If that is not commitment I sure don’t have a clue what is.  I used Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and The National’s song Slow Show mixed together. The National is not a super popular band but it is one of my favorites.  There is already a piano in the song so I figured these very different genre’s of music would mesh well.  The result is obviously very choppy but I feel the biggest sense of accomplishment. I am not going to quit my day job as I have realized over the course of five hours that music is VERY difficult to manipulate.

Deep Breath.  Exhale.

The assignment I chose to do had me mesh together two songs.  I will walk you through the process because below me, it’s extensive.

1.  Download Audacity

2.  Take two songs of your choosing from YouTube.  Click on the “share” tab below the video and copy and paste the short link onto this website.  This web site (You Tube to Mp3) converts the file for you and makes it downloadable onto your computer.  This by the way is my favorite way to get free music.  I must also warn you I have been know the rip tags off of mattresses as well.  Call me a common criminal.

3.  Download and save this file to your computer

4.  Open Audacity and “import” the two songs.  You will need to cut and paste various parts of the songs into each other.  It actually is a very simply cut and paste process similar to Microsoft Word.  Helpful hints:  Learn from my mistakes:  Stereo music (like the music you listen to on the radio and Mono music like classical music are different.  Mono music “cut and paste portions” can go into Stereo music files but not visa versa.  Don’t ask me I know little about music files.  “EXPORT” this music to your computer do not save it.  Again,  I think it has to do with the type of file .

5.  Go to SoundClouds’s website and import your music and your done!!!

Phew.

I am looking forward to moving away from he Audio aspect of this class. I can say I did learn how to use Audacity though! A note about the picture… my BRAND new laptop shut down in the middle of my project for no apparent reason. Is my laptop sabotaging me?! I’d like to think so.  No big deal, once you take a whole day off work to complete one homework assignment you will feel my pains.

The Last of the Rockmen

This is for the Music Mashup assignment on the audio assignment page.  The assignment was to take two distinct sounding songs and mash them up to make a new song with their alternating or combined sounds.  I used Rockmen from the FTL soundtrack and the theme song from The Last of Us.  I decided to use video game sound tracks to avoid the copywrite infringement that comes along with using regular, licensed songs.  I alternated the songs on their respective builds, then alternated them in the main part of their tracks.  Then, as they reached each of their finales, I had them play at the same time, overlapping each other.  I liked using these two songs because they have very different moods and sounds to them.  Rockmen is quick and upbeat, and is a combat track for its game.  But the Last of Us theme is slower, sadder, and is meant to be more cinematic in its mood.

Music Mashup

Using Audacity (or any other sound editing program) create an audio mashup with 2 very distinct songs. According to wikepedia these mashaps may fall under “fairuse”.

3 1/2 Stars!

For this assignment I looked towards Country music as there has been many stories about how similar so many songs are. For my first song I chose “Close your eyes” by Parmalee and the second song was “This is how we roll” by Florida Georgia Line. I found both selections on Youtube and converted the files to MP3 so that they could be uploaded to Audacity. Through working with audacity I found two sections that sounded most similar and the “mashing” began. I cut down each song so you all would hear was the most similar parts and then formed the two together. At first the transition into “This is how we roll” was awful and I had some trouble trying to figure out how to fix that. I went to the effects tab and implemented the “fade out” tool and am much happier with how it sounded. Through doing this assignment it was eye opening to think about how many songs are so similar. Audacity was a great software to complete this assignment. Below is linked to my upload which can be found at Sound Cloud.

Mashup Madness

3 1/2 Stars

For one of my assignments this week I decided to do the Music Mash-up which was super difficult. Not only was it difficult to have to mash the songs together but it was really hard to find songs that sound similar and wasn’t super choppy to have to mash together. For mine I did You Da One by Rihanna and True Love by P!nk, I thought they had pretty similar concepts behind them even though they sound pretty different. Considering this was my first time “mashing” some music, I didn’t think I failed too horribly! :)
