What’s Inside You?!

Character Dossier: Rose King               3.5

What’s Inside Sasha Kellogg?

Creating a magazine feature about what’s inside my character seemed pretty simple, but it forced me to think long and hard about what Sasha Kellogg would have inside her. The assignment “WIRED Feature–What’s Inside you” (3.5 pts) would have been easier if I was talking about myself because throughout life I have picked up labels (like in high school when you are a jock or band geek). My character had a very different lifestyle than I do because she was in the public eye since her youth and now tries to stay below the radar (also unlike me, she would not be labeled as a hippie on occasion because she lives in the 1950s). Most likely, people would simply see her as the popular one or the quiet one, but these views are different than how she views her own characteristics. I chose five “ingredients” that would fit with Sasha’s personality, and guessed at the percentage of each inside her to make it seem more like the magazine articles on what is inside energy drinks. Here is the result:

wire feature

I used Microsoft PowerPoint to make this magazine feature because it is easy to insert text boxes and pictures. It was tricky to come up with explanations for the different “ingredients” in Sasha because I wanted to make them seem nonspecific to her. Following this logic, it is the amounts, not the ingredients themselves, that make her who she is. Sasha is very intelligent, so book smarts has the highest percentage. Confidence is something she would have practiced in her childhood as the face of a company, so it has the second highest percentage. Cooking has the same amount, because Sasha lives alone and would have to learn cooking skills. Also, she lives in the 1950s so she would fit in with the other young women if she could cook. Sasha is also somewhat cynical about the world, which comes from her past experiences and from the mood of the time period (after all, she is a noir character). Finally, like anyone else, Sasha has a slight addiction to coffee. Despite the breakdown of ingredients, she is 100% Sasha Kellogg!

In the Mind of McNulty-From The Wire

For this particular assignment, I choose to do the character McNulty from The Wire. I used photoshop to accomplish this task as well as a host of other tools found inside of the software. This was a learning process and I think I am happy with the end result.

In The Mind of McNulty

The next assignment which I completed was worth 3 1/2 stars.   The Wire Magazine Design Assignment called for us to investigate in the inside and outside of either ourselves or the mind of someone elsewhere.  The individual which I decided to investigate was McNulty.   The picture I choose was found on a Google Image Search it had an interesting quote on it and I incorporated it into my design because I thought it screamed pure McNulty.

DESIGN PROCESS

In completing the design I began to think about the background which would look best and which represents an urban setting.   I goggled a brick wall background which I used for the foundation of my design.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The next steps that I took were to first open the brick wall background on a white background, then I opened the picture of McNulty as a second layer by opening it separately and then copying and pasting it onto the brick background.  I then used the opaque tool to fade out McNulty to make him appear as if he was a apart of the bricks. I then used the crop tool to cut the picture into three parts and adjusted them aside from one another.  My goal in this was to make the picture of McNulty look like bricks themselves.

TEXT:

In respect to the text, I used the text box and the wrap tool to wrap the text around the picture.  I wanted to be as detailed as possible when adding the wording to the text.

Further Design Process:

In addition to all this to give it an authentic feel I Googled a Baltimore Police Badge and inserted it into the upper right hand corner for design aesthetic purposes.  I then used the opaque tool to fade this into the picture a little and then I used the blur tool to blue the edges and make it authentic.  Prior to doing this I had to open the file as usual and actually use the lasso tool to cut it out and then copy and paste it onto the main background layer.

This process took me about two hours and the most creative part of it was doing this as I went.  As the design began to come together I began to think about different things about how I could perfect it and what I could add to make it look more authentic.

The design which I came up with was  What’s Inside McNulty:

Whats Inside: Wesley Roberts

I thought the assignent “Whats Inside” was super cool. I decided to go for the extra points of using my actual CV. The background image I used was from my independent student research project with LIDAR (I will include it at the end of the post so you can see it clearly.) I imported the image into photoshop and turned the brightness down and used the blur tool. I then used the rounded rectangle tool to create the section boxes. From their I just duplicated layers in order to maintain the same size box throughout.  The color scheme of the boxes was not random. The background image is color coded based on height AGL (above ground level), red being the highest and blue being closest to the ground. Accordingly, the box that are at the top of the image is red and the box at the bottom is blue.

I’m sure you have all noticed the big white boxes under references and clearance. Since this is going to be on the open internet I didnt want to include the names and contact information of my references as well as information on me. I left their places of employment to convey my reasoning behind redacting their identity and information.  I was too caught up with making it like my CV that I didnt really think about the security questions until I was done. Sorry it messed it up some!

This is definitely the coolest assignment I have done thus far!

Stars: 4 design

Who is Anapaula?

One of the design assigments I chose was What’s inside of me?  This assigment is worth 4 stars, and I chose to do it because sharing the different components of what makes me as a person was very important to me.  People should know the different things in my life that matter the most, and it also gives them more of an insight of who I am besides what they read in my blog.

Slide1

To do this assignment I mixed powerpoint with Photoshop.  I created different bubbles to represent the important things in my life.  This assignment really made me put things in perspective.  I had to think about what were the most important things in my life, and also how each individual component make me the person I am today.

“What’s Inside of You?”

I had fun with this assignment, however, I found myself regretting the program I used to create it as I tried to save it in a format that would allow me to open it in this post. I used Microsoft Powerpoint to create my poster detailing what’s “inside of me”. I found it interesting to… Continue reading →

Design Assignment: What’s inside of you?

The directions for this assignment are as follows:  Based on the regular Wired magazine feature “What’s Inside” found in the paper version of the periodical. (http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/magazine/15-07/st_redbull) Create a what’s inside poster all about you. Make it humorous, make it serious, extra points if you can turn it into a formidable replacement for your CV!

This is what I got -

This assignment induced very retrospective thoughts for me.  ”What is inside of me?” was a question I asked myself a number of times, and this assignment took much longer than I had expected.  I started out going in a different way, aesthetically.  I then decided to be as economical as possible, and to keep it simple. After brainstorming some personality traits that I thought I possessed, I put it all together using photoshop.  A lot of the material on this poster is stuff I pulled from my resume (LOL, jk?).  I don’t think I can think of any place I would put this poster.  Maybe my bathroom?  But I can see myself making more of these posters, but for other people.

Assignment worth 4 stars.
