Today’s assignment was fun! I was able to apply the idea of using a limited color palette to a poster design and help advertise for the school’s Cybersecurity club! PS… you should join!

I made the poster using Canva, which has been helpful this semester! When I downloaded the file, it was in a pdf format, so I learned some additional tips on converting files in Linux. For the few people that may be curious how this is done, I used a program called ImageMagick which has a fun command called convert. I ran into some issues but quickly resolved them with this source.

The link to the assignment is here! See you all tomorrow!

What if a Beach Cult Tried to do Advertisements?

“Design a poster for an upcoming event, it could be a concert, a car show, really anything you want, the event can even be made up. Be creative and have fun with it. When you finish your poster, advertise it on your social media accounts so people will know about the event.”

Event Poster

So obviously this isn’t an actual event. I’ve been watching a lot of creepy horror stuff lately that I wanted to do something like that here. My main thought process was what if a beach cult tried to do advertisements?

I used canva to make it, which is a super-easy way to do this kind of design. Like most things I do now, I do it the Bob Ross way. Mess around and try things out until it looks pretty good.

What the heck? let’s do it.

Event Poster

I wasn’t sure what event I wanted to do for this assignment. I went on the venue website that I usually see most of my concerts at, at home, and found one that I would like to go to and ended up making this poster.

I used Canva to include all of the text, clipart’s, and the frame around the photo. I also went on Google and found the picture he is using for his tour. I had a lot of fun making this, because I love designing things like this. I guess this is part of my “Joy of Painting.” Since I don’t actually paint, I like expressing things through different fonts, and clipart’s in the designs I make. I chose those clip art images in case people are unaware as to who Thomas Rhett is. I think subtle hints like that really help market events, because it draws in peoples attention.

I also included it on my DS106 Instagram!

Event Poster

Here is an event poster I made for the UMW tennis team’s fall invitational. Every fall we host a tournament here at UMW and get teams from all over the state and even out of state that spend a weekend playing tennis. I get so much joy from being a part of this team, and this one weekend every fall is one of the most joyous moments that I spend with my team.

Event Poster

“Design a poster for an upcoming event, it could be a concert, a car show, really anything you want, the event can even be made up. Be creative and have fun with it.”

I designed a poster for a fake event! Sort of? But yeah, come to the daily DS106 class every day at every hour and learn how to design and create your own website! ?

Piano Night!

For this assignment, I have created a potential upcoming event! I selected a template on Canva and created a flyer for a possible event coming up. Let me know if you can make it or what your thoughts are on the flyer I created!

80s Dance Party

For this assignment, I did not know how to approach it at first as I was not familiar with creating posters or what site to use. Thankfully, due to the tag box below where I could reference to other work, a student had previously completed this assignment which I was able to use the site she used to create my poster (Canva, which is completely free).

I did not want my poster to be too crowded with too much information so I completed sort of a save-the-date type of poster for an 80s event dance party. I used the background and font text provided in the template, but inserted my own 80s picture (which happens to be my ds106 logo).

I had fun creating this poster and although it is pretty simple, I can’t wait to create more advanced posters in my future now that I know of a website for advertisements.

Event Poster – UMW Car Show

UMW very own Car Club is hosting their first car show! hope to see you all there!

Have You Heard of “Yosakoi”?

???????????????Do you know yosakoi?

I am not–and never will be–tired of bringing in my Japan adventures into my work. When I decided to do my third design assignment on an Event Poster, the first two things that came to mind were bhangra and yosakoi. However, the first actual event that came to mind between those two was the yosakoi festival, which is held annually every August for three days.

Yosakoi is a type of Japanese dance that’s very energetic. My explanation won’t do it any justice, but if you watch performances, you’ll see what I mean. In Akita, there’s yatose, which is an Akita-specific yosakoi variation. However, I wanted to bring light to yosakoi as a whole.

Using “Pages” on my Mac, I created a poster with a white background, and put in text (using Baoli SC font to give it more of a “festival in Japan” kind of vibe). At the top I put “Yosakoi Festival,” and I put “August 2020” and “K?chi City” at the bottom. I inserted yosakoi clipart and had the two people face each other. In the center, I wrote vertically in Japanese (in the same font) ????????which is “Yosakoi Festival.”

I did as little as possible to make it stand out and such that it doesn’t look cluttered. It might look a little plain, but I know that any added colors, text, fonts, or images would make the poster look too loud and busy.

Something interesting that I did notice as I was formatting the images and text was how “Pages” uses the grid system to keep things aligned properly. I noticed this before, but in the context of design, it stood out to me more this time.

Anyway, here’s the final product! I hope this has peaked your interest in some way!
