I’m actually a superhero

Shaboo1 copy (1)

For this assignment called Cartoon You (worth 3 and a half stars), we had to render a cartoon version of ourselves. This gave me the chance to make myself (and my dogs) superheros because, to be honest I do not lead an interesting life. So let me introduce you to my alter-ego: FIREBLOOD!

____________________________________________________________________________________

As a young child, a girl named Samantha was abandoned by her parents. As she traveled the country side she found refuge in a traveling circus where a Master knife thrower named Shabazz took her in and raised her as his own. As the years rolled on, and the circus moved from town to town, Shabazz taught his daughter to master the art of throwing knives. Samantha was close with all the circus animals, but none more so than two mixed breed canines that no one else wanted. One night when the circus was camped on the outskirts of Washington DC, Samantha and her two canine friends decided to go on a walking tour away from the circus. Unbeknownst to them, local thugs decided to attack the circus to steal exotic animals for sale. the thugs were confronted by Shabazz who defended the animals and other circus workers with all the fury of a protective father. As Samantha and her dogs returned to the circus they found it under attack from thugs who were also burning everything in site. Samantha searched desperately for Shabazz, eventually finding him near a burning tent full of cleaning supplies and other cleaning materials. As she and the dogs attempted to pull Shabazz to safety, the tent exploded, sending chemicals in all directions covering her and her dogs. Samantha had never felt such pain, every part of her body seemed to be on fire, her last memory before passing out was seeing her dogs laying on the ground surrounded by a mysterious glow. Samantha remained unconscious for several days in a local hospital. When she awoke, she learned of the death of her adopted father and mentor. Not knowing how to react, she fled the hospital and returned to where the remains of the circus were. Finding Shabazz’s knives, she began to throw them as a means of dealing with rage, guilt, and grief. As she threw the knives , she noticed that for some reason that when the hit target they would burst into flame. It was at this time that her two trusty canines also had found their way back to the circus. They too have been affected by the explosion. Both seem to have the ability to communicate with Samantha telekinetically. She learned that one could shoot heat wives out of his eyes and she named him InfraRed. The other had gained the ability to see UltraViolet rays to aid the location into seeing missing objects or people. Samantha renamed herself FireBlade and with her two canine friends set out to seek justice against those who have destroyed her home and killed her adoptive father.

(Disclaimer: Yeah none of this happened to me in real life.)

Okay, so I could drone on and on about my superhero abilities (or lack there of), I really want to explain how I brought this character to life by Photoshop. At first, I drew out my little superhero and her sidekicks and proceeded to scan it into Photoshop CS2 ( it’s outdated, I know).

I’m going to list out the steps to using Photoshop with coloring in my picture

Photoshop steps to coloring it in:

1.) To darken the black outline I went to Image> Adjustments>Levels. A slider is shown, and you either slide it right for the black to appear darker or left for it to appear more faint.

2.) After that is done, I than went to the Channels panel and took out all of the white by pressing Delete and Control+D in the first Background layer, this allows the image to be transparent.

3.) Then I adjusted the image mode from gray scale to RGB (to enable me to color it in) by Image> Mode> RGB.

4.) I then created a new layer and renamed it “skin” and did this for every detail of the picture and so on. With each layer the image can be colored with a brush tool without affecting the other layers.

Cartoon John Brown

This assignment (3 and 1/2 points) was to remake someone into a cartoon character. This can be draw on a piece of paper, on a tablet or convert photo into comic book style. I decided to do last choice, convert photo into comic book style.

model-210x300

I used this photo to convert into comic book style. And it came up with the photo below.

As I turned into comic book style, the eyes, nose, mouth and mustache are kind of unnoticeable, but I satisfied with the outcome. Since the photo is originally black and white, it shows his loneliness well. One thing I really don’t like about the cartoon version of the photo is, because of the shadow of his face, it connects the appearances so makes hard to notice, especially eyebrows and eyes.

And I Related It to MSDOS Games

For 3 stars this week, I completed the Cartoon You assignment, including Emily Bostaph’s Cecilia Alva in the process, since Donnie is in contact with her regarding her late husband’s death.

Full Cecilia and Donnie

I took a pixel art approach, similar to Code Monkeys, to delve deeper into GIMP.

As for my process, it consisted of trying to find Jessica Stroup (the avatar Emily’s character uses, at least) in the most widow-ish dress I could.  Miss Alva is extremely affluent, so I had to find a nice mansion for her character to inhabit. I used “marble mansion” as my search term, which yielded a great image of Marble House

That image is gigantic, though, so after I found the image of Alva I would use, I fired up GIMP, and opened both images as separate layers. Then, I tried to position her on the top of the steps, given her posture and foot position.  Then, I had to shrink her image to more closely fit in with the Marble House.

After that, I took a long while trying to locate a color, full body image of Edward Robinson, who I’ve been using as a body double for Donnie.  After spending far too long changing search terms and peering through page after page of search results, I decided to just use a black and white image–one that I already have on my computer and have used previously.

Having to use a black and white image of Robinson forced me to rethink my game plan, but sharpened my focus on noir-ifying the duo’s first meeting.

I opened Donnie’s image and scaled it to be a bit larger than Alva’s for perspective purposes, having to place him in the foreground because, apparently Robinson didn’t take any full body pictures in noir attire.

Then, I started cutting off the “fat” of each of the character’s layers by using the free select tool and just deleting the selected areas, making sure to cut out the area between their arms and torsos.

After positioning Alva and Rawlen where I wanted them, I started adjusting the image as a whole. I scaled the image down to an 800×600 grid, and started using the blur, smudge tools to try to merge the noir characters into the picture. I then applied the Visibone 2 color palette via the Indexing tool found under Image->Mode->Indexing, then greyscaling the result. After I was marginally happy with my image, I shrunk it down to 400×300 to add some extra pixelation.

There are definitely obvious flaws, but I really didn’t want to do touch ups with the pencil–I’d just used the indexing tool for the first time, so I’d rather develop a separate (touch-up) skill at a later point; slow and steady development rather than trying to skip steps and rush (forgetting things in the process, as I’m wont to do).

But, here’s a closer view of the image:

Capture close

It reminds me of an old MSDOS game, specifically The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary: a fantastic pre-Gizmos and Gadgets puzzle game, for those who’ve never hard of it.

Folami Cartoon

cartoon folami

For this assignment (worth 3.5 stars), I created a cartoon image of my character, Folami. In the image, Ami is tall and intimidating, with high cheekbones and a rather androgynous wardrobe. She is smoking a cigarette, in typical noir fashion. The light gradient and soft purple colors stand in stark contrast to her dark skin and shadow. Overall, I think the image conveys a sense of power and confidence.

To create this image, I started with a similar image of Grace Jones. I chose this because I see many similarities in these two women. Then, I used the paint and paint bucket tools to create a similar cartoon image of Folami, giving her a spiked pixie cut and a powerful yet bored expression. Next, I created a shadow behind her using the clone stamp, paint bucket, and blur tools. Finally, I added a gradient in the background to give it some gentle color.

yeah so self portraits are a thing

cartoon me!

This is for the cartoon you assignment! It’s me in my favorite dress (which I can’t wear because somebody got a bit carried away with the weather). I just did it in my sketchbook with pencil and colored pencils. Then I cropped it and added contrast in photoshop so you could see it better. Also hands are weird, I should learn to draw them. And sorry sorry sorry for the shadow from my phone at the bottom I didn’t even notice it till I got to cropping it.

I did this because I missed a dailycreate and I’m hoping an extra assignment will make up for it :)

Cartoon You!

PicsArt_1424057725275

One of the assignments this week was to cartoonize an image of yourself or somebody else. I used this image of myself to imitate my character Conway practicing his shots for his job. I used the app called picsart to do this assignment. This image goes hand in hand with my character so i thought that it would be appropriate to use to show his lifestyle. The original assignment can be found at http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/cartoon-you/. It is worth 3.5 stars.

Me as a Cartoon

Cartoon You: 3 1/2 points

For my 4th assignment to reach the 12 star minimum, i decided to make myself into a cartoon. Here i found a picture of me from a project my sophomore year. I then went onto cartoonize.net and changed my self into a cartoon. Below is the picture of me as a cartoon.

Cartoon Shadow

Cartoon You (3.5 pts):

The following is a a cartoon picture of Shadow created with Paint as well as the Clyde filter on flickr to make him look transparent. Using lunapic.com I added the comic book style effect to the final picture of shadow. In this picture he is in out for a stroll through an alley. He is his favorite shape of a man with a hat and trench coat.

Step 2: Add Filter

Donnie’s Gone Dotty

Robinson Color CartoonRobinson Pipe Cartoon

Seeing as the Cartoon You assignment was so simple, I decided to include 2 pictures this time.

I opened up each picture in GIMP, found the Filters tab, traced down to Artistic, and found the Cartoon effect.  I used the provided sliders and retro-fied Donnie…twice. I really like the one, on the left because of the effect the cartooning had on his jacket. I almost made the mask radius too large to see the hint of the red flower sticking out of his breast pocket, so I had to make sure that was included to give it a wee bit of flair.

This assignment put me past the six required points. It was supposedly worth three points, but I only needed one, and this didn’t seem hard enough to justify its point value, so I think one point would be reasonable.

Cartoon Me

This assignment I decided to complete is titled “Cartoon You” and is worth 3 and a half stars. Here’s the link to the assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/cartoon-you/

For this assignment, the task was basically to just make yourself into a cartoon. There were a lot of options given to us that I could use to cartoon myself. I decided to use an internet program to get the job done because I know that if I were to try to do it in Photoshop, it would result in me pulling my hair out. The website that I used to do this is http://www.befunky.com/create/ It was fun to do and I spent some time messing around with the program just to see what it had to offer. Under the “Effects” category, I decided to use the effect called “Cartoonizer 1.” I then played with the color and clarity of the picture to get me final product. Overall, this was a fun little assignment that ended up not being too stressful!
