Battle of the Blackbeards

I think a lot of people went through a pirate phase at some point in their life. Honestly, I never really left it behind. I’ve made other posts about Black Sails before, and it’s one of my favorite shows, but one of the best recent shows that I’ve watched is Our Flag Means Death. Both of these shows feature the pirate Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, though the portrayals vary wildly. Both go back and forth between society and the pirate life, both feel betrayed by their right hand man but let him back into their confidence, but while for one the title of Blackbeard has begun to wear, for the other the brutality that name evokes has never been just for show.

I once again used Krita to edit this project. The two photos I started with were different resolutions, and I have to size up Teach on the right which made seamless merging difficult, but I tried to adjust the colors on both photos and use some very transparent layers to make it look like the light is hitting both men from behind. I also used a variety of selection tools to remove the background I wasn’t using, including the magnet selection tool that I had never used before but which proved very helpful. This photo was really a joy to make, both because I am getting less frustrated with my tools and because the subject was something I love.

Photo Mash

This four-star assignment states “Take 2 actors and mash them together into one photo. You can use Photoshop or Pixlr to do this. Make sure that they look like they belong in their setting and they look like they were actually together when the photo was taken (the colors match, the sizing is right, etc). Have fun with it!”

Now… This was my chance to have a lot of fun… Especially with current events, you can’t tell me I wasn’t fully justified in creating what I did!

Let me tell you how I did it. I ran to Photoshop and decided to find the most accurate picture of a Hispanic baby shower that I could find on the internet (I’m Hispanic, I know precisely what they look like). After I found a picture that satisfied me, I ran to Google Images and found a full-body photo of Chris Rock. Yes. The one of him at the Oscars. I then cut out his body from the photo, and pasted it neatly onto the baby shower photo. Of course, I had to edit the lighting and all that to make sure it blended in nicely, so I think it came out pretty well. THEN, I did the exact same thing… With Will Smith! I pasted him right across Chris Rock as neatly and happily as I could, and here are my results!

Great, no?

Bob in Paradise

I twisted this assignment a little bit because it’s been a while since I’ve done a post relating back to Bob Ross and I found the perfect picture for this kind of assignment. I wanted to create this idea of Bob Ross still being alive but off in a magical land with others that are equally as heartwarming. My original thought process was to grab a picture of Santa and a picture of Bob Ross and combine them together at a barbecue, but when looking for photos of Bob, I found one that could instead be a bit romantic and funny. In the picture, Bob is reaching out to paint on a canvas, but it almost looks as if he is sensually caressing someone’s cheek…or beard. In that very moment of realization, I knew that Bob Ross and Santa Claus had to be in a loving relationship, hiding away in a tropical paradise, leaving their old lives behind to spend valuable time together. You can see by Santa’s expression that he is consistently shocked by the passion that Bob puts into everything, even relationships.

Santa and Bob

This took me quite a bit of time to create, regardless of how simple it may look. I’ve only recently begun using GIMP, specifically the selection options to crop things out of images, so this has certainly been a learning process. I spent a long time trying to smooth out the edges of Bob and Santa using the lasso tool and I believe it paid off. I also had to figure out how to set the image to grayscale in order to make everything look as cohesive as possible. Unfortunately, this is the highest quality image of Bob Ross looking this specific way that I could find, so the crispness of Santa against his smudginess is a bit off-putting, unfortunately. Regardless, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity because the two images simply work too well together. The only reasoning I had for a beach in the background is that it seemed like the most romantic and private setting for this interaction. Honestly, if anything, this assignment has turned into a bit of a fan fiction assignment, but at the end of the day I’m happy with it and I hope you get a kick out of it!

Two Worlds Colliding…Mashup

To be entirely honest, I am not really sure where this one came from or why this idea popped into my head. I chose to do a photo mashup as one of my assignments (4 stars). I had a completely different idea when I started and I somehow ended up here with Octanouts and clone troopers. I decided to add an Octanout character from the episode when they were in outer space to an image of clone troopers. I chose a celestial background to mash these two together. I had recently watched Octanouts with my niece and I figured everything is better when you throw Star Wars into it. I hope someone finds this as strange as I do!

The Mario Movie

In honor of the recent announcement of the Illumination Animation Mario movie cast, I decided to attempt the Photo Mash assignment. For this assignment, I wanted to make an edit of an image from the original 1993 Mario movie, replacing Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo with Chris Pratt and Charlie Day.

I started by finding an image from the original film that featured Mario and Luigi. Next, I found images of Chris Pratt and Charlie Day where their heads were in roughly the same positions as Hoskins and Leguizamo. I cut out their heads in Procreate and superimposed them on top of Hoskins and Leguizamo. To make sure their heads were merged appropriately with their bodies, I left a bit of their necks on and used the blend brush to provide a smoother transition from the face’s color to the neck’s.

I worked on this immediately after one of our longest rehearsals, so I didn’t feel like writing up a blog post about it immediately. However, I still wanted to share it since I thought the image was funny, so I posted it on Twitter, where the official archive account for the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie liked and retweeted it.

The post The Mario Movie appeared first on The Oberle Archive.

Don’t get your Ratatouille in a Tangle!

For my first mashup assignment, I decided to edit two characters into the same setting and make it look natural. I decided to edit Rapunzel from Tangled and Remy from Ratatouille.

tangled ratatouille

Since she has the frying pan and Remy is a chef, I decided to put them in the kitchen! I put Remy in her pan just because I thought it was cute. This includes two of my favorite Disney movies so I love it! I also think they would be a great pair. I even thought that this could be a whole new remixed movie. Remy could help Rapunzel cook in her castle. She becomes a great chef and he gets to live in a castle. I really love how this turned out. I think it is very cute.

Ferris Bueller’s Day at The Breakfast Club

For this mashup assignment, I had to mashup a photo of two actors into one. To keep this assignment on theme with the class, I choose to mash up The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Here is my creation!

I took the two images from Google, and used Photoshop to mash them together! The photo of The Breakfast Club had a white background, so that was easy to erase, then clip the characters from. After I created a new layer, I copied that into the photo from Ferris Bueller’s day off and flattened the image.

Fast and Furious Meets Back to the Future

For this assignment I had to once again combine films together, however while I previously combined scenes together in my previous post this time I will be focusing on combining characters from different movies. This assignment was a little tricky because I wanted to place characters together that you as the viewer could say, “yeah I could them together”. So I started brainstorming ideas I happened to start thinking about Back to the Future, one of my all time favorite films, and I thought “I have to incorporate this movie somehow”. So I decided to pick Marty Mcfly, the main character from the film and I began thinking of characters I could place him with. The thought of the him and the  Delorean started making me think about films with cars, which instantly led me to the Fast and Furious franchise. I could honestly see the character Brian, form Fast and Furious, and Marty together having one crazy race. Again I used adobe Photoshop too create the image and I had a blast doing it. I really enjoy the creativeness the mashups promote and I enjoyed the three mashups I ended up making.

Photo Mashhh

For this assignment, we had to take 2 actors and mash them together into one photo and try to make sure that they look like they belong in their setting.  Well Mr. DiCaprio here and the actress to whom I don’t know her name but was the only actress that I could find after about 3 searches who fit the theme, definitely looked like they belong together. I spent about 45 min trying to edit this photo w/the Microsoft photo app and it just didn’t work so instead of posting the mess, I’m posting the version that doesn’t look horrible…maybe she’s the good voice, trying to talk him out of his next move…

Photo Mash

For this assignment, I picked two characters that are always confused by the public. I figured they are the best pick for this assignment. They are Gandalf Dumbledore!
