The Rocky Road to Dublin-Music Mapped

So, for this assignment, I had to choose a song with geographic reference, create a Google map with them along with media, and then make a video.

The first thing I did was try and find a song. I google songs that mention cities and I have some. However, I didn’t know any of the songs. I remembered this song, and I liked that I could tell a story (of where the character travels) with this map and video.

I then had to figure out how to record both the map and the video. I didn’t know how to do that. I used the Game Mode on Windows 10 to record. I tried to have the video and the map in separate windows, but when I would click on one, the other would disappear. If the windows didn’t disappear, then Game Mode would only record the window that I started with, and not the other window. I originally just tried using Google maps, not creating a map, but that didn’t work. I also tried using Google Earth, but the whole “recording only recording one window” thing happened. Google Earth also moved too slowly!

Finally, I decided to just make a Google map like the assignment said to. I did, and I found pictures for each of the 5 places.

I then decided to just switch on and off between the video and the map. I wanted to have both going at the same time, but I just couldn’t figure out how to do so! I took multiple screen videos until I was happy with what I got.

After, I uploaded it to the Microsoft Photos app and added the title picture and the rest of the pictures, including the credits. Then, I uploaded the video and wrote this post.

Overall, this was more frustrating than I thought it would be. I really wanted both the map and the video to on screen at the same time. I do think that I better understand how screen recording works and I did get more practice, which is always good. The song also got stuck in my head for a while, which is either good or bad, depending on if you like the song! I like the song, although I have the look up the lyrics to know what the heck they’re saying!

I just hope that I don’t get a copy strike for this!

Barcelona Mash-Up: The remixed mash-up

For this week’s DS106 Assignment, I totally embraced the idea of remix.  We were tasked with completing a “Mash-Up” Assignment, but I didn’t just pick a mash up and do it exactly like the description said.  I remixed it and made it my own.

The original assignment was to take a song that mentions a place and “mash it up” with a google map of that place.  The final product should have a song mentioning a place and a map of that place overlaid, basically to create a Music Mapped Video.

11073559_10155404568815093_438354921269255333_nFor my project, I chose a song by one of my current favorite artists, Barcelona by George Ezra.  Many of you already know that I was blessed enough to visit Barcelona, Spain last year, thanks to my dad being a BOSS at selling Hyundai Parts.  Even though Pops spent nearly the entire trip enjoying the view from the penthouse of the Hotel Arts (iconic if you’ve seen Barcelona) due to his blown out back, I explored so much of the beautiful city solo.  Traveling “solo” is something I didn’t think I’d enjoy, but I found it to be incredibly freeing and sort of exciting.

Anyway!  I didn’t think that a song+map mash up would do my beloved city justice.  So, I decided against the simple map idea.  I first took a few of my favorite collages I had posted to Instagram and made them into a quick Microsoft Photo Gallery SlideShow.   Then, I found the song on YouTube for my audio.  Since I wanted to include a map AND beautiful images, I thought, “Hey, why not have in some 360 views too?”  So, I also pulled up AirPano’s Barcelona page.  If you haven’t been to the site, do it!  It’s amazing.  I’m going to use it for mini “virtual field trips” for my students because it has thousands of cities, with street  and sky views, plus tons of information already embedded onto the page.  Finally, I used Screencast-O-Matic and their super simple, FREE downloaded program to record my screen.

To mash it all together, I recorded on my laptop, pressed play on the audio on my iPad (so that step wouldn’t be seen on screen), played the slid show in Photo Gallery, then simply played around on Air Pano till the end of the song.  Bonus, Air Pano also has embedded maps, so the map was still there.

Enjoy my remixed Mash-Up!  Oh, and if you’ve enjoyed my video editing attempts so far, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE on YouTube!  I’m trying to boost my media cred.

Thanks!

Exs in Texas

For my music mapped video I chose to do the George Strait “All My Ex’s Live in Texas” I chose this songs because I really like George Straits music and this song. For me I found it difficult to get the google maps into Video pad, the way I was able to do it was I saved the maps into a pdf then copy and pasted them into paint and then cropped them to what I wanted. This took a while to figure out but eventually worked out. getting the song was much easier because I already had it in my iTunes so I was able to just drag it over into VideoPad and use it. I thought this was fun mapping out the places he mentions where his Ex’s are its almost a map of places for him to avoid when in Texas.

Music Mapped Videos

So the assignment is to.. “Pick a song that has geographic references (or heck ,make up the references), and create a Google Map that has the locations along with media for each pin in the map. Mash it up with the audio or video of the song into a new video- making it a music mapped video!” -cogdog

The first song that popped into my head was the beach boys “kokomo” song. It lists many locations in the carribbean. When i googl mapped the locations some of them dont have that red pin point button over the location. So i copied the image and pasted it over the locations without the button. I got the image of the button and the maps by taking a photo of the screen. Macs have this option by holding Command, Shift, 3 and it takes a pict of the screen. You can also select the area where you want to photograph instead by holding Command, Shift, 4 …. which is what i did.

This project took unnecessary steps since i didnt have or knew the best software to do this in. I started on a Mac with Adobe Fireworks to make the animated gif. But then I didnt know how to get the song off youtube. So when I got home I used a Windows and used Realplayer to get the song. Then had to use Windows Live Movie Maker to put the clips together. This program didnt take all my slides from my gif only the first image. So i had to resave the gif and export it as each slide to get all the slides as different image documents. Then imported in Windows Live Movie Maker. Added the music, adjusted the stage times and put in some video animations.
