Story through text.

This assignment was 5 stars and here is the original link. This is what it asked me to do, “Chances are you’ve probably seen those creepy ads on YouTube which tells horror stories through text. Now it’s your turn to tell a story. It can be horror, comical, or serious… it is up to you! Grab a friend (or two phones and text yourself back and forth) and text each other to tell a story. Before you start texting, make sure to turn on the camera so you can record the story or download an app to record your screen.”

I downloaded an app to record my texts while I was chatting with my friend. I decided to do more of a serious conversation, which entailed that she found out that my boyfriend cheated on me at the party my friend was at last night. I learned a lot of from this assignment and actually enjoyed creating it. The story is completely made up. I uploaded it to my google drive and sent it to my email, the upload took very long. I finally uploaded it to my youtube account and that also took a long time. This assignment was challenging but I am glad that I learned something new by doing this project.

FBI Investigation

This assignment I did is called Storytelling Through Text where you have to create a story through texting, so I did this one with my mom. My story is quite short, but I texted back and forth with my mom to create the story, and then took a screenshot of my text message story at the end. It was not that hard, and it was a nice and fun assignment. Here it is.

I Have to Tell You Something…

Have you ever seen those videos of stories told through texts? They’re pretty much everywhere. But have you ever thought about creating your own? Now, that’s a whole other thing. I have, and this is the video I created.

Choosing this was super easy for me. I always saw the adds for Hooked and others that always caught my attention. I downloaded the Hooked app before it became popular, and I always liked how that this was a way to tell a story. With technology, there is so many new ways to tell stories that it is almost overwhelming. I stopped reading stories that are told like this since it got very popular and the stories got really bad, but I’ve always liked this new way of storytelling.

While trying to decide what story to write, I looked for inspiration from online. I found this short story (on the right). I thought this was really funny and found it to be the perfect story to write about.

I decided I wanted this to be the woman (who we named Amanda) texting her friend about what happened after this short story. I asked my suite-mate to be the friend I was texting, and we changed her name and Bitmoji on snapchat, where we recorded this, to become the character.

I wrote the script for us to text each other about, but honestly it was used loosely. It was used mostly used just as a baseline to what our conversation should be.

You obviously can’t hear my suite-mate and I, but we’re giggling like mad crazy. After finishing the clip, my suite-mate let me use her video-editing software on her computer. She mostly did the work though, I’m bad at editing and didn’t understand how to use it. We sped up the video, cut out my keyboard spazzes, and some awkward pauses. Then, we added some music on top of the clip, and our creation was completed.

I hope you enjoy this clip! My suite-mate and I had a lot of fun completing this, and I can’t wait to create more content for this class! ?

PS. I apologize for all the “Well…”s I used. It was so bad.

Where’s Leo? (5 Stars)

For this assignment it said to tell a story through text. So I decided to tell a story about Leo, which everyone should know who he is by now with the amount of times I’ve used him as an assignment. This assignment was fun to do, because you got to create a story however you wanted. The type of story I was trying to create started out with worry and finished with being comical. I hope you guys enjoy.

Scary Texts

Joe finally got in contact with Maria…. but she couldn’t give out any information… is she really scared? is this really her texting? is she in on this mission?….. these texts are hard to decipher huh….

I did the last 5 star assignment based off the texts of Joe to Maria. She does not know where she is or what to do. Here are brief texts of Joe bing confused and scared and not being able to help. The texts are actually really sad and tell a story of a small portion of Joe’s huge story I have been trying to tell all semester. I screen recorded a conversation between mine and my sister’s phone. I went back and forth on each and created the conversation. I hope you guys like it!

Telling a Story Through Text

Our house is on fire!

For this assignment, I screen recorded a text conversation with my friend Izzie about created a quick funny story. As Izzie said our house is on fire, I was surprised. Our other roommate Samie was the problem as he did not know how to use a stove. We then had a plot twist story as I wanted to leave him to show him a lesson.

Secret Mission Alert: From a Text?

Stars: 5

I chose to do this assignment because we all know what I love to do in this class. Do as many stars as possible, to avoid the write ups!

I tried to think of how to do this assignment, first and foremost. I thought of using a friends phone, but didn’t want to intrude. I knew there was a laptop at home, but I was at school in between classes. I chose to do iMessage on my laptop, and changed the sending address from my number, to my email. This way, I wouldn’t get double of the same messages, because I’d be texting myself.

I chose to go along with the secret agent theme. I chose to be my secret agent, Amelie Amaya, and to be recruited for a mission. I kept it short and brief, to not bore the reader. While also vague, to not give too many details of the mission and blow my cover, and to leave the viewer with unanswered questions.

I chose to keep the screen record whole. I could’ve edited it in iMovie to add a title and credit screen, but the instructions in the assignment say to screen record it. I didn’t want to mess up the assignment too much, so I just kept it whole. After that I sent it to my laptop and put it in this document! I also didn’t feel like youtube was necessary to upload, as I didn’t do any editing.

Overall, this assignment was REALLY easy. I love coming across assignments that you think are going to be harder than they really are. I also really enjoyed it. More than I thought I would.

The Text

This week is all about mashups and remixes. Prior to this week I never really knew the difference between the two and typically linked them together. Since reading our weekly assignment post I now know the difference between a mashup and a remix.

The assignment page stated that a remix is usually a creative edit of one form of media. While a mashup refers to the mixing of media/content of from disparate places. Going into the weeks assignments I was glad I finally had a solid understanding of the two.

Granted I could certainly confuse myself later…

That being said this week we’re assigned 10 stars of mashup assignments from the assignment bank. So with that I wanted to start the week off by starting my mashup assignments. I decided to start with a 5 star assignment called Storytelling Through Text. This assignment asked that…

Chances are you’ve probably seen those creepy ads on YouTube which tells horror stories through text. Now it’s your turn to tell a story. It can be horror, comical, or serious… it is up to you! Grab a friend (or two phones and text yourself back and forth) and text each other to tell a story. Before you start texting, make sure to turn on the camera so you can record the story or download an app to record your screen.

I felt this would be a fun and creative assignment to do, similarly I always liked the ads that relied on text to tell a story. This felt like a great opportunity to put my mashup skills to the test. Likewise I wanted to connect this particular assignment to the secret agent character I created and have built upon this semester.

I completed this assignment by simply using my phone and my friends phone. All I had to do was just hit the screen recording button on my iPhone and from there I proceeded to send text messages back and forth from my friends phone to my phone to tell a story. Once I finished the text story I stopped the recording and the video saved to my camera roll. From there I sent the video to my camera and imported it to iMovie. This allowed me to create it as a movie and ultimately speed up the video a bit so it wasn’t too long and easier to watch. When it imported fully I just sped up the video x2 and proceeded to save and upload it to youtube.

The story I told within my texts was one that involved my character princess/secret agent Juliet Stones. Essentially I staged it so that her brother Harrison who is a fellow agent texted her needing help. From there the story consisted of Harrison and Juliet going back and forth about what had happened to him and what is to come. I don’t want to spoil it for you so take a look below to see what happens!

I was inspired to tell a story that was intriguing, but wasn’t too drawn out and confusing to follow. Ultimately the screen recording ended up being 8 minutes, but with speeding it up my video turned out to be 4 minutes. This I felt was the perfect length and captured a perfect story. This was a super fun assignment and I certainly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good mash up assignment to do. Likewise it was a fairly easy process to put together. The one thing I recommend is that you plan out what you want to say in your texts ahead of time, so you aren’t wasting time while recording trying to come up with content.

I essentially planned a script which really helped the recording process and made the text exchange so much easier. I am so glad I did this, it also allowed for me to really put together a concise, but exciting story. Hope you all like it!

Storytelling through text

Hey there everyone! Today, I decided to get an early jump on week 12. This week, we have been tasked with the responsibility of completing mashup assignments, creating tutorials, and most of all, understanding the process involved in mashing up and remixing artistic mediums. The five star assignment that I chose to do to start this out, was the storytelling through text assignment.

I began this process by thinking back on all of the text story videos I’ve watched in the past. I usually ignore them when I see them on social media now, but when they first came out, I watched a few- because they intrigued me. I would venture to say that 90% of the ones that I’ve seen before are centered around a spooky backstory, or some horror theme. In order to make mine different and unique, I made mine play into our spy theme, and it also matches up with my past works, playing into how fed up my character Rich is with spy activities as a whole. I think his short, unbothered texts to the villain shows where he’s coming from, as if he could care less about the situation. The villain that I had in mind while creating this was not a good one, as in, they were bad at being a villain. Much like Dr. Doofenshmirks from Phineas and Ferb. I tried to add music over the background of the video in post, but none of the default songs in iMovie matched the theme, and I didn’t want to get copyrighted by YouTube before the end of the week and end up having to remake it.

If you’d like to create one of your own, simply do a screen recording, and throw it into iMovie, fast forward it to 2x speed, export it, re-import it, and make it go at something like 1.5 speed. Export it once more and repeat until you have all of the pieces you need to blend them into a story. Without further adieu, here’s my bad villain text story. I hope you enjoy.
