Show Jumping

This week one of the assignments I chose to do was What’s Your Skills? It was worth 4.5 stars. The goal of this assignment was to show the world something you have a passion for.

I chose to show a video of my horse’s first show jumping round she ever did. During a show jump round, the horse and rider combo are timed from the time they start to the time they finish. At this particular show, the stopwatch is started when the pair rides through a set of two orange cones, and it is stopped once the ride through another set of orange cones. The goal is to finish the course in the time allowed so as not accrue time faults, and to not have any refusals — the horse does not jump — or any poles knocked to the ground. If either of those two things occurs, the pair accrues jump faults. Both time faults and jump faults are added to your score, which is not ideal because you want a low score. I chose this particular video because it showed not only something that I am passionate about, but it also showed that not all a rider’s show jump rounds can be perfect, as you will see at 1:08.

My horse was a five year old when she had this event and it was the first show she had ever been to. It was down at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia. The Virginia Horse Center is a large facility that hosts many shows throughout the year.

Take a look at her first jump round.

Talent Takes Practice

This video assignment, worth 4.5 stars, wanted us to show off a talent or something we are passionate about. I have spent the weekend horse showing and decided to post a video of one of my rides. In my eyes, riding is more of a passion than a talent. The reason I say this is because becoming an effective rider is not something that has come naturally to me. I have worked hard and continue to invest as much time as possible to continue to learn and improve my knowledge and skills.

A friend of mine took this video using my iPhone. I then uploaded the video onto my MacBook Pro and then dragged the video from my documents folder into iMovie. All I did in iMovie was mute the sound. There were a group of girls having a very snobby and ungrateful conversation so I figured I would spare everyone from having to listen to it by taking the sound away. I wanted to add a song, but nothing came to mind that wasn’t overkill or super corny. If an appropriate song comes to mind, I will probably go back and add it since I actually know how to do that now!

Soccer is life!

What’s your skill? (4.5 stars)

I have played soccer since before I can remember, it is my passion, my life. I created this montage of clips and pictures from my trip to Memphis for Club Nationals this passed November. I have also included some fun pictures from Nationals in Arizona from the year prior as well.

100% Reason to Remember the Name

What’s Your Skills? – 4.5 Stars

Ever since I was 5 years old, softball has always been a passion to me. I started out playing tee ball and worked my way up to playing softball in a county league, and then making my way to travel softball at age 8. I started out as a catcher for a couple of years until I hurt my knee and had to get stitches which prevented me from being able to bend at the knees as I typically would need to as a catcher. From that point, I taught myself to become a pitcher. After that period of time, I never looked back and pitching was what I knew I was meant to do in softball. I worked days in and days out, year around to become who the pitcher I was. Unfortunately, during the summer after I graduated high school right before college began, I tore muscles and ligaments in my shoulder and was told I wouldn’t be able to pitch anymore, well not nearly as I was able to at my highest point. So the reasoning behind my decision of showing off a skill of mine was to be able to relive what I did for 15 years of my life in a few minutes.

I grabbed my boyfriend, a.k.a. my cameraman today, and we went outside as I decided I wanted to do a little bit of pitching for my skills video for people to see. It was definitely not nearly as competitive or fast-paced as it would’ve been years ago (don’t think I wanted to make my shoulder any worse), but it did bring back a lot of memories which made this process that much more fun! He recorded about 15 different videos in total, and him and I went through all of them and I kept asking him to re-record the video because I wanted it to be just right. I had thought of all the different angles I wanted him to be placed so the video had different views to it. After all of the recording, I uploaded them to the computer and opened up Windows Movie Maker to edit the entire video.

VideoMaker

I clicked on add photos and videos, and then clicked on each video of me pitching and added them to my video clip. Once they were on the video clip stream, I added animations to the transitions of the clip which faded them in and out as each video came and went. I didn’t add any effects to the videos because I wanted them in their raw, purest form. Once I completed all of the editing on the video animations, I added the song “Remember The Name” by Fort Minor. That song was my walkup song in high school, which made me think it would be perfect for this video because it has been a part of me since then, why not keep it going and add it to who I am now.

I know I have said each video assignment was fun and that I liked them a lot, but I can definitely say this was by far my favorite. It almost brought me to tears bringing back all the memories I had pitching and playing softball.

“Your Voice I Still Hear It”

For my first video assignment I decided to do the What’s your Skills assignment (4.5 stars). For this assignment you had to record or make a video of yourself showing off you talent. After thinking about doing an assignment where you had to mesh to videos together and figuring that it would be too hard to do, I finally decide that this would be the first video assignment I did. I recorded myself at least 7 times because I was so nervous.

My talent is rapping. It’s something that I do often but it takes a little bit to get me in my element. SO for the first few videos I did I wasn’t really comfortable. I had to keep telling myself to imagine that I was doing it for fun with my friends and started to visualize the ds106 community as my friends so I could finally get to where I finished. I’m sorry about the audio the first time i played it back it sounded a lot better but I didn’t really know how to fix it. I’m sorry and hope you can understand what I’m saying. Let me know what you think.

Bringing Up My Past

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/whats-your-skills/ – 4.5 Stars

Along time ago, in a year far far away, I use to take karate. I had been doing it for roughly about 8 or 9 years, and stopped after my freshman year. It has been a while since I did any of my open hand forms, but this is my 2nd open hand form. I recorded it using my camera, and did this in my dorm. No other modifications were necessary; just a camera and some light.

I decided to go with this because it was something that I use to do a lot. I had to tone the form down just so I did not hit anything in my room, so it is not at its peak. As far as the video itself, I tried putting my camera as far back as possible, but unfortunately, I still managed to get out of its view at least once. I thought this would be relatively good for this assignment, and it turned out rather well in my opinion.

Again, I’m new to this whole video thing, so it may not be the highest quality.

Hope you enjoyed the video. Let me know what you think!

Week 4 Summary Found!

Well I found this hiding in my drafts. To be honest I never double check if it was published because I was in such a hurry. I went to post one of my assignments tonight and found that this was a draft that was never published. I dunno what happened, probably something to do with my scattered brain. Since I didn’t do it when I originally posted, the files are also now on youtube. I don’t know how much credit I’ll get for last week but here’s the original post. As before the original is in black and new in blue.

Wow did I get my butt handed to me. Editing video took me much longer than I expected. That and uploading seemed to be a bit of a pain in rear. WordPress is really giving me trouble. The “auto imbed” feature of Jet pack doesn’t like me. (6/19 this was fixed) Of course with me being up in Ohio, it was rather difficult to get most of this done in a decent manner. Well here it is folks hope you enjoy.

Mortar to the sound of Sabre’s

This assignment was the “Inanimate Motion” Assignment. I decided to have fun with my new mortar and pestle. This reminded me of making a gif, but having the ability to give it audio.

What Makes you laugh?

This one is self explanatory. I love this movie. It has some of the best one-liners.

Simple DSLR tutorial…I mean really simple.

Ok most parents have a learning curve with technology, especially things with lots of buttons and functions. My DSLR is one of them. Yes, they aren’t that complex….but if you’re used to a kodak disposable…well that’s a different story. Though in my mother’s defence she is not the only one who has mashed the mode knob and was confused why it wouldn’t take the picture.

What skills you got?

Ok i decided taking a video of me taking pictures would be boring. So I decided to show off some of my gear and my finished works. I know similar pictures may be on the web, but I assure you, every picture in this video I personally pushed the shutter button.

Melody Spoon Playing

The spoons are a carefully acquired skill and essential accompaniment to skiffle bands, music hall songs, and all the music of Chas n Dave. This is all very much part of the London and Cockney heritage. Spoons take hours and much beer to master.

What’s Your Skills?

For this assignment I decided to not show you my mad skills at reading literature or coding websites, lucky you.  Instead, I made a video to show you my cocktailing skills. I used Serge Gainsbourg’s Black Trombone for the background music and kdenlive to cut and mix all the clips together. I hope you enjoy.
