Week 11: Video Assignments

Getting to know the joker
I found clips from “The Dark Night” on youtube and downloaded them. Once I did that I put them in order so the story makes some sense. I got the Jokers stories that he tells people in order.
Musicless Music Video
It took me a while to find a video that I was able to download. iMovie has a lot of sound effects in the library already so I used those. I thought it would be funny to use a sound effect after that scene happens, it makes no sense but it was fun to do.
Why So Serious?
When I was younger I was a big fan of Indiana Jones and Ace Ventura. One of the movies is somewhat serious and the other is comedy. This was pretty challenging trying to match up the mouths and the words. I cut the clip down a lot to make it seem like it was somewhat accurate.

That Bucket List Though

I believe Robert Neville’s bucket list would contain these:

  • Find another living human
  • Beat my depression
  • See his daughter and wife once again
  • Beat Alcoholism
  • Find the cure

While Robert Neville was alive he did not find another living human. He lost his family thus made him spiral into a depression assisted by alcoholism. Eventually he wants to find a cure, goes to a library and read up books, but he is not a person capable of finding a cure.

Why So Serious?

I know I didn’t follow the purpose of the assignment, but it is comedy.

Mini Documentary

Why So Serious? You’re in Zombieland!

More fandom creations of World War Z!

I did the assignment Why So Serious? in which I had to put funny audio over a dramatic (even traumatic) scene from the movie adaptation of my book.

Initially, I wasn’t quite sure what comedy to dub over World War Z. I played around with using audio from Elf, but I just couldn’t get the right mix. I ended up googling “comedy movies” and saw Shawn of the Dead. From there, I decided to stay within the apocalypse genre and use audio from Zombieland. When I first saw it last fall, I thought the movie was going to be way more raunchy than it really was, and I appreciate it for that.

I highly recommend both Zombieland and World War Z (even if the book and movie are entirely different). To get a taste of both, why not watch the video I created?

I used part of the opening of the movie Zombieland and laid it over the Philadelphia scene from World War Z. The video quality wasn’t the best, but I couldn’t find any better version of it, sadly.

I had to do a little bit of cutting (and thankfully I was able to use a Mac with iMovie for that instead of my HP’s Movie Maker) but in some places the audio fell PERFECTLY into place. Other places were a little more challenging, but I eventually worked everything out.

Why So Serious?

The Why So Serious assignment asked me to take a serious part of a movie, and overlay it with comedy audio. So I did just that, mixing the Bobadook and Seinfeld.

For those who don’t know, The Bobadook is an Australian horror movie that got a lot of critical acclaim along with some attention in the United States. I took the trailer for that movie and put the Seinfeld theme song over top of it. I thought of what an iconic horror movie was (Bobadook), and what a iconic comedy was (Seinfeld), and mashed them together.

Gravity and Ghostbusters

I loved the idea of making a serious movie funny, so I took this assignment and ran with it.  I began by selecting my two scenes to mashup.  For my serious scene I chose the reentry clip from Gravity (one of my favorite movies).  Then I chose the proton pack scene from Ghostbusters as my funny audio clip. I downloaded these clips from YouTube, entered them in CyberLink PowerDirector, muted the Gravity scene, and overlaid the audio from the Ghostbusters scene.  I edited the order of some of the shots from Gravity to make the audio mesh better, and the result was pretty solid.  It does a fair job of demonstrating how important audio is for creating tone, and how two jarringly different pieces can come together in a pretty hilarious manner.  The final product is available below for your viewing pleasure.

Video Assignment – Why So Serious?

First video assignment of the entire class! For this assignment, we’re supposed to take a serious scene from a movie, and then dub it with audio or music from a comedy. The serious scene I chose was the Raptor in the Kitchen scene from Jurassic Park, and I dubbed it with the song Yakety Sax, which was frequently used in The Benny Hill Show. That song was the first thing I thought of when I saw the assignment, and I just started searching for a serious and tense chase scene.

The process was fairly simple. I downloaded the scene from youtube, used youtube to mp3 to download the music from youtube, and then plopped both of them in Premiere Pro. It’s simple enough to trim audio and video in Premiere Pro; it’s very similar to Audacity, just with that video element. I haven’t used Premiere Pro nearly as much as Photoshop, so I’m still learning the ropes, but it’s way better than any free video editor I’ve used.

“Ooooohhhh-tay!”

For my first video assignment, I chose to do “Why So Serious?”  I had to take the audio from a funny movie and add it to the video of a serious movie.

I chose The Little Rascals for my funny movie and Miracle for my serious movie.  Both of these movies are on my list of favorites which is how I thought of them to use for this assignment.  At first, I was Googling serious movies but they were all movies I wasn’t interested in so I figured I might as well pick two movies that I love. I’m a big Washington Capitals fan which is why Miracle is one of my favorites as well! I’ve been missing ice hockey season lately so I actually watched this movie the other day to get my fix! It’s such an inspirational story and represents a great moment in our country’s history. You can watch the trailer here if you have never seen it. Buckwheat from The Little Rascals is one of my all time favorite characters and I knew I wanted to use the audio from something he said because he’s so adorable and funny.  I’m 20 years old and still saying “ooohhhh-tay” and doing the chin wave because I’m such a fan of this movie! Here’s the trailer in case you’re unfortunate enough to have never seen this movie!

In Miracle, the USA’s coach gives a serious, motivational speech to the team before they play the Russians. It’s a pretty epic speech and worked perfectly as a serious clip. Choosing a funny audio clip from The Little Rascals was a little harder because it’s full of funny quotes! I occasionally tell my sister, “Dear Morgan, I hate your stinkin’ guts. You make me vomit…” as an ongoing joke between us so I decided to choose the audio from that segment of the movie. It seemed to be the part that would be the funniest when matched with the speech from Miracle.

You can see my tutorial for this assignment here.

Montage!

I completed the assignment why so serious because it sounded really fun. I used a song about montages from Team America World Police and added it to the famous montage scene in Rocky. It’s spot on and really funny. The song is only 80 second long and the video clip was 3 minute long so I had to be strategic and have the song start and end at an appropriate moment. I ended the song when Rocky kissed “the girl” and made that the climax and cut out the part about winning the face.

I used savefrom.net to grab both the Rocky and Team America videos. I had to extra the audio from the team america video using adobe audition and then add it to the movie in windows movie maker. I had to mute the existing music in the Rocky video to make it work. Hope you enjoy the result!

Lock, Stock, And some Ron Burgundy

For this Video Assignment, I decided to go with Why So Serious and bring back an old favorite of mine, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking barrels and dub over words from Ron Burgundy.  I chose this scene because its a pretty serious scene about bluffing a Desert Eagle with replica guns.  I chose Ron Burgundy because a lot (if not all) the statements in that movie make no sense and are all the more funny for it.  The storyline for the scene is simple, the gang comes in, expecting to hold up the one man for something they thing he possesses using nothing but ski masks and fake guns.  The soon find out that the man isn’t buying their bluff and slowly escape with their lives.  If you were to mute the film completely, the video would suggest this based on the body language and facial expression, however, with the new dialogue, it makes less sense, though at some parts, the Ron Burgundy dialogue actually fits.

To create this film, I used http://en.savefrom.net/ to pull down the YouTube videos, one in MP4 form (Lock, Stock, and two smoking barrels) and another in Audio MP4 form (Ron Burgundy) since I was only planning to dub the audio into the video.  I could have use VideoPad Video Editor to extract the audio, however, I chose this approach instead.  Next, I want through the entire Ron Burgundy Audio clip and split it into segments for each phrase used in the YouTube clip.  I detached the audio from the Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels clip so that I could still use some of the original clip sounds (music, footsteps, glass setting on a table, etc).  All together, the audio dubs over fairly decently.  The darkness in the video clip make the mouth movements less distinct, which allows more flexibility around the mouth shape and the actual words being dubbed over.  With other videos, the character’s mouth movement was prominent, that some words wouldn’t fit the motion of the mouth on the screen.
