Don’t Mess With Zuckerberg

Redub The Audio (4 Stars)

Mark Zuckerberg in this movie is kind of my kind of guy. An intelligent guy with a HUGE chip on his shoulder. Anyways I changed the audio to portray him and his jerk of a teacher. To be honest he is not that much of a jerk, but I digress. I use my voice as the Zuckerberg and the teacher. It was a little difficult because I was trying to attempt at some humor, match their lips and facial tones. I think I pulled it off, what do you think?

Redubbing Harry Potter

I decided to redub a scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 (wow that’s a long title) because I’ve actually done this before with my friends (we just didn’t record it). The story behind this is that we usually hang out and decide to watch Harry Potter because we’re total nerds. Half [...]

Mad Miracle Max and His Witch

Redub the Audio – 4 stars

Take a classic movie (or heck any movie you like), and rescript the audio of a key scene. You will want to re-write the lines to change the meaning or intent of the scene, delete the original audio, and record your own (this can be done many ways, voiceover in iMovie, recording the audio and editing the track in any other movie editor). For my example, I took Howard Beale’s on camera rampage from “Network”, and changed it to a diatribe on being bored in school.

This is one of the assignments that I had done preparations for in Week 10.  I had settled on the Miracle Max scene in The Princess Bride.  In particular, I always loved how the scene where Miracle Max and his witch-I mean his wife are arguing.  They go at it like mad, but are smiling together by the end.  The producers of The Princess Bride managed to capture the feel of an every-day married couple arguing, in such an odd setting as Miracle Max’s cottage in the make-believe world of the Gilda and Florin.  So, I decided to redo the argument.  I wrote a script (I got to pick what my husband had to say for this argument…guess who wins!!;), and I recorded this with the help of my husband.  I edited the video clip in MPEG Streamclip, and recorded (and edited) the audio using Audacity.

After this, I took both exported clips back into Windows Live Movie Maker, adjusted the timing a bit, and published the video.

I figured the argument over the remote control was one of the most classic arguments, so that’s what I ultimately settled on.  I actually had to do some Wikipedia research to figure out what to talk about in regards to TV shows, since we don’t get cable or anything like that (and haven’t for years).  Still, I figured this was a good choice.  We don’t really argue, so I figured it was just as well to pick something we don’t even know anything about to argue over. :)   It may be evident how horrible we are at arguing (and acting) when listening to the redub, but overall, I think it fit pretty well, and hopefully it’s at least a little entertaining.

Still, nothing will ever beat ‘I’m not a witch, I’m your wife!’  And not even Gangdam Style can beat ‘Humperdink! HUMPERDINK!!!’  Honor and credit to those to whom it is due.  *humbled curtsey*

Video Assignment #2

For this assignment, I picked redubbing the audio.

First, pick the clip you want. I chose to do a clip from A League of Their Own. I love the scene where Tom Hanks totally goes off and talks about how “there’s no crying in baseball”.

Second, make sure this is a clip that can have the audio changed to a completely different meaning. I chose to make it about him breaking up with her, since she is crying and all. Suggestion: Remember the Titans cafeteria scene: make Denzel’s monologue about the horrible quality of cafeteria food rather than about intermingling.

I downloaded the clip from youtube using iLivid. Just put the URL into iLivid and it will do the work for you. This downloads the clip directly to your videos folder. From there, I moved the clip into Adobe Premiere. Since I had already spent a lot of time with Premiere from Assignment #1, I felt a lot better. Suggestion: Play around with Premiere before using it. It’s better to practice than really mess something up.

I named the project ‘no crying in baseball’. From the left bottom, I simply clicked and dragged my video file (freshly imported) to the main box. Once it showed up on the upper right screen, I played it to make sure it worked and got a feel for what I needed to do and then I went where it shows the video and audio tracks on a timeline and clicked the little speaker/volume control by the audio track. This muted the clip, which is what you need to do. I docked Premiere to the left of my screen using windows button and left arrow. I opened audacity and put it to the right side of my screen (windows button + right arrow). I pressed record in audacity and then pressed play for the clip in premiere. As I was watching the video, I recorded myself saying things after a breakup. The only downside is being able to play one character. After my recording was finished, I clipped out parts I didn’t need–long silences and such by using the highlight and delete method.

I exported the audio as mp3 to my desktop. I went back to Premiere and then imported the mp3. Just like with the video, I dragged it from the left bottom side over to the right bottom side where it showed up on the audio 2 track timeline thing. I played the clip to make sure it at least made somewhat sense. I trimmed the excess with the razor tool in Premiere. Then I went to file–export–media. I chose to export as MPEG4 to my desktop; I also checked the maximum render quality box. I then uploaded my clip to youtube. Here it is:

Suggestion: the shorter the clip, the easier it is to manage.

There Will Be Bad TV

Video Assignment Count: 9

Well I finally decided to upload a video assignment I completed earlier in the week: Redub the Audio. Here it is:

When I first started doing this assingment I knew immediately that I wanted to use a clip from There Will Be Blood. The majority of this movies is silent, making the sparse moments of dialogue even more meaningful. THe opening of the film dosen’t have dialogue for nearly 10-20 minutes. As such, with the popularity of the film–a well deserved accomplishment–many people can easily identify a quote form the fim especially the now classic milkshake sequence. So when it came time to pick a moment form this film to redub I went right to that scene:

Now came the really tricky part: What the hell was I going to dub over this? I knew I wouldn’t have any problem recording and editing the footage. All that was need was to go into Final Cut Pro, detach the audio, and delete the first couple of minutes. I wanted to leave the ending in because I didn’t want the entire clip to be my voice. Plus, by having Eli respond to what I was saying it makes it just seem a little more realistic.

Originally I had planned on using my old trusty Audacity application to record the voice over, but I had a whim to see if Final Cut Pro had a feature which would let me do this, and lo and behold it did. This made things easire, but I still had the problem of having no idea what to talk about.

Prof. Levine’s triste on the horros of academia was an inspiration (the one on the assignment page), and this one was a jumping off point as well. I still had no idea and did about 20 or so attempts but ended up abondoning them half way through. Then I saw this:

and i completely lost my shit and faith in humanity

So it just came to me, berate television for its continued stupidity. After that everything fell into place and worked out dandy. In retrospect I will say that sound editing has not been my forte but I’m slowly getting better at it.

ONWARD!!

Redub a Movie***

Redub a Movie***

I really enjoy these Old Spice commercials; I think they are extremely funny. Part of what makes them funny is they are bizarre. They don’t have the standard this is my product, they have a story. So I wondered, if this commercial didn’t have any sound, what might they being selling? I came up with Crafty Vaults places for men to hide their stuff from the women folk. Think about, how often do you find your deodorant or ice cream taken by the women in your life? Okay, maybe not deodorant, but ice cream…all the time!  Craft Vaults is a company that design any imaginable vault- some ancient city, animal, box, circle, picture frame/ freezer, water resistant, fire proof … you name it! It seems like a really fun idea.

Commercials are probably the most fascinating story because you have to tell a story in approximately 40 seconds. One has to hook the audience, get their message across, all while appealing to their target audience. It is quite a challenge! Old Spice commercials are the interesting because they think outside of the box, not only as in set design but script. Instead of targeting men, they target women … “women don’t you want your man to be like me”….what a great idea! Women clearly have great stake in how their man smells, so why not convince them that Old Spice is the way to go. While, I adopted this to take a commercial and redub it idea from someone else, I took a different route. I decided to take this crazy amazing commercial and make it something stereotypical  this is the problem, his is my product, this is how it solve the problem, buy it.

I got the video of the Old Spice commercial from YouTube. I used “PWNYouTube” which is a bookmarklet (all you do is drag the link to your bookmarks). When you get a video you want to edit, right-click HQ MP4, Save Link As. Once you have done that you can open the link in Window Movie Maker. Once in Window Movie Maker, I muted the sound of the video. Then I went into audacity and got my recording of what I wanted the commercial to say. I uploaded the audio and I adjusted the start time on the music edit tool bar. I realize that my recording in longer than the commercial, so I added an ending title page. I did this by adding a “title”, changing the background color, adding animation, and text.  While, I realize this isn’t the best video/audio match-up, it is my first attempt at videoassignments (I’m a little worried about the difficult of this section).

Other good examples of this are :

I hate when people stalk me:I loved this re-dubbed of ” A Walk to Remember”.  I read the block and it seems like a confusing and awkward assignment because it is basically talking to yourself which can make one self-conscience. She did a really good job and it was super funny.

Excy Herrera’s Etrade Babies:This was a really cute idea, redubbing a commercial sounds like a lot of fun. I do think it is interesting to redub something that is already redubbed, like the etrade babies. However, babies talking is only the best thing in the world.

ds106… anyone… anyone?

We know people love ds106. I love ds106. I know you do. My students this semester are doing some of the best work (especially in terms of representing their work online) I’ve seen since I started teaching this course in January.

The UMW Domain of One’s Own greatly streamlined the startup process, Martha and I have made syllabus adjustments (introductory Bootcamp, re-arranging the introduction of audio earlier) that seem to have worked, and having redone the materials now three times, it feels very solid going into my next round (I am teaching it online again for Spring 2013).

My focus has been on our sections here at UMW, but we have a good amount of activity as well with Michael Branson Smith’s York College/CUNY section plus Ryan Rish’s class and Darren Crovitz’s class at Kennesaw State University.

Yet I cannot help but notice the fall off among our open online participants. Where have they gone?

From the bits I scan, I can see Emily Strong has been one of the most active in doing assignments, and a few more in the mix, like Abigal Wellman, Sandy Brown Jenson makes stories all the time, John Johnson regularly riffs in, Leigh is doing bits of both phonar and ds106, Ben Rimes jumps in with assignments and nudges me about Daily Create stuff, Scottlo is audio casting his life in Saudi Arabia heck even Tom Woodward eeks out a GIF or a remix now and then… okay as I dig I see a steady current. This is good. Maybe more than I thought.

But it’s nothing like that first year and many of the people who were most active are doing other things.

Now if regular CogDogBlog barking snarling fashion, I might be calling out people, asking “what is #4life”?. Shaming. But that is in no way my intent. And if anyone apologizes I might come over to your house and chew up your shoes or lift my leg on your couch.

If I were not teaching ds106, I would guess my amount of ds106 activity would be low. Once you have gone through the intoxicating round, its naturally to move on, to return on occasion. Like that weird uncle. Maybe not.

But we’ve not seen too many people new join in. And I could guess from here til Tuesday:

  • People are participating in peripheral ways, like doing Daily Creates or ds106 radio. This is good, Unlike any other MOOC, c or x, in ds106, you do not “fall behind” if you miss a few elluminated lectures or don;t do the weekly homework. The door to entry/exit is completely in your hands, and coming and going happens without penalty.
  • Maybe its the lack of Jim Groom who is onto amazing work with his hard boiled class. Jim would be the last to claim his presence makes ds106, but he is a draw. Heck its why I came to it.
  • It’s messy. If you have heard of ds1206, when you get to the site, it’s not even clear how or what to do. You are hit with a firehose. I’ve tried to organize an intro for open participants but I bet its not clear what to do. I have plans to work on this. More than that, after all the teaching that has been done, we have a rather extensive set of resources, recorded videos, various approaches to the assignments. My goal is organize them into a buffet type syllabus so that an open participant could pick and choose a path through the ds106 content.

I may have to repeat myself, this is no slap against all the people who freely played, shared, contributed in ds106 before. With the intensity of the load of following and mentoring 25 students, each blogging several times a week, it gets tobe a challenge to give attention to other work in the community. And while the class will go on regardless, ds106 is better for having the larger cloud of activity, so I am invested in finding ways to make it easier for people to craft their own ds106 experience, and get hooked on the kool-aid.

Hopefully it does not go down like this…

I could not resist doing a voiceover for the classic bit of Ben Stein improv — wait a minute, this is a ds106 assignment, redub the audio

I already had this clip, so I imported it into iMovie, and muted the original audio. To get my own dub, I played the video on low volume (so I could try and track the rhythm) and recorded my own voice over in Audacity, reading the content of the ds106 Open Participant web page.

And woah, I totally forgot, when editing an audio track in iMovie, you have some effects available, so for the main track, I dropped mine a pitch

and for the closing credits, I took the “Anyone Anyone” audio (detached the sound from the video of the original), and used the echo audio effect.

I like that, I go on a ramble about ds106 and I end up doing an assignment.

I still dig it. You?

A step toward education

This video is a redub project; indicating the women’s important step toward education. The goal of this assignment was to take a movie and rescript the audio of a key scene.

Women in my country have been strongly discouraged from gaining an education; even they were legally banned from attending any kind of schooling during Taliban’s invasion. But Afghan women never give up despite of the harsh situations.  Therefore I considered to create a video indicating the women‘s enthusiasm for gaining education and standing for their right.

To achieve my goal I downloaded Raajneeti, an Indian political movie from YouTube, using PwnYouTube. Then I used MPEG StreamClip to trim the scene I wanted. After getting my desired scene I used Video Pad and AVS video editors, for editing my project.

On the other hand, besides recording my voice; I added a cheering sound effect at the beginning and at the end of my project. The sound effects were downloaded from freesound.org. Similarly, I used an Afghani music track as background music.

For this assignment I reviewed two previously done examples; which I found very helpful. The first example that I reviewed was called redub of dance scene ; I really liked this example because I found its concept very unique. Secondly, the process of doing this assignment was well explained; therefore I chose to review this example.

The second example that I reviewed was notebook redub ; I found it interesting because the concept was similar to what I considered to do. Secondly, I considered this example because it was very clear and well explained.

Here is my project-Enjoy

Even though, Redubbing was not an easy task; because there were many elements to consider such a script, use of certain software, dialogues and sound effects. But it was very interesting to redub a movie scene; I really enjoyed creating this video. It is huge personal success to me.

Pulp Fiction Dance RE-DUB

Although I said I was originally going to re dub the John Wayne movie I decided to do the dance scene from Pulp fiction. I decided this because on Monday I found myself watching Pulp Fiction for the hundredth time probably and I was reminded of this scene. The way they dance was so funny to me I could not pass up the opportunity to re dub it with different music. The program I used for this is Windows movie maker. The first thing I did was get the video off of YouTube by downloading it using Real Player. Real Player is very useful i would recommend it because it has built in converter to many different formats. So I used Real Player to download and convert it to Windows Media format and then dragged it into Windows Movie Maker. I then edited it down to the parts I wanted because I did not need or want the entire clip. Then came the difficult part, picking the new music. The way Uma Thermon and John Travolta dance is hilarious to me because it seems so dorky if you put it to modern music. After trying countless songs that just didn’t seem to mesh enough for me I settled on Tik Tok it just seemed to work, you may disagree or you may like it I don’t know its just my opinion so enjoy here it is.

I hate it when people stalk me..

Audio redubbing.. harder than it looks.. but I took a crack it. http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/redub-the-audio/ I decided to pick the scene from A Walk to Remember where Jamie tells Landon that she’s sick. I decided to make him a stalker and have her telling him she wants him gone kind of feel. It took awhile to think [...]
