That Boinging Rawls

For my second assignment from Rawls’ point of view, I decided to do “That Bleeping Censor” (5 stars). I thought it would be funny, especially since on Rawls’ twitter I retweeted this:

Also it’s just funny because the amount of cuss words that come out of the man’s mouth.

How I did it:

First, I found the video that I wanted on YouTube. Then I used Free YouTube Downloader to download the video as an MP4 file on my computer. Then I opened the video in Windows Live Movie Maker by hitting “Add videos and photos.” I trimmed the video to where I wanted it. The original YouTube video was two different scenes stuck together so I cut out the second scene because he cusses more in the first one. I chose the cuss word used the most (f^%&) and chose a sound to cover it up. I used freesound.org to find a funny sound that I could replace the word with. I found this series of boings and chose my favorite one (the second to last one) to use to censor him. I used Audacity to get the boing I wanted. I imported the whole series of them that I downloaded and highlighted the one that I wanted to use. Then I clicked on Edit>Duplicate to get the sound on its own line. Then I deleted the series and used the time shift tool to get my single boing to the beginning. Then I cut out unwanted noise from it (blank noise at the beginning and the end) and exported it as MP3. Then I went back to Windows Live Movie Maker and found the places where Rawls said the F word and hit Add Music>Add music at the current point. When I had it at all of the places where he said it, I moved them around to make them perfect by clicking on Music Tools and using the Start time option. Then when they were exactly where I wanted, I split the video at the point where he said the F word. Then I clicked on Video Tools and faded the spliced portion in slowly for most of them. That made it so that you could not hear or you could barely hear him say the word. The boing was over top of it so you could hear more of the boing than the word. This was hard because you can still hear the word and I didn’t know how to get rid of it completely. I know I could have done it with iMovie but I did not have time to go to the convergence center or the library or wherever to mess around on the Macs.

Anyway, here is the finished product:

That Bleeping Censor

For one of my Video Assignments this week, I chose to do the Bleeping Censor AssignmentĀ (5 stars). For this assignment, IĀ spent most of the time just trying to find a video with a lot of cursing in it. Unfortunately, the only ones I could find were South Park ones which were just pretty offensive. Then I remembered this videoĀ Ā where girls use the F-word to show the absurdity that people take curse words more seriously than violence against women or womens rights. Apparently the FUCKH8 campaign isn’t actually all that great, but I think the message behind this individual video is. I know my censoring it counteracts with that message, but oh well. Here’s my edited version:

I first downloaded the original version as an mp4, then uploaded it to iMovie. Then I watched thisĀ tutorial on how to censor words on a video, and followed the instructions. I just used funky sounds that were already on iMovie in place of the curse words, and viola! Exported it toĀ YouTube, and here it is. Hope you enjoy!

That Bleeping Censor

That bleeping Censor was a Video Assignment that involved taking a clip from a movie, and choosing a word that is used a lot to bleep out. Ā  You could bleep it out by a sound or by a phrase. I choose to use the very annoying sound of an alarm.

By using iMovie and a MP4 converterĀ I downloaded the movie clip from youtube and imported it into iMovie. I then drug the entire clip in. Next I had to find a sound to bleep out the very often used F* word in the clip. I decided on the alarm, because it is probably my least favorite sound. The next part was very hard and tedious, I had to insert the bleep into the video where the F* word was used. One part of the clip it was used a ton so being able to insert it in multiple times back to back was difficult, because I could only get so close to the previous sound effect.

I was trying to come up with a movie that had a lot of profanity and somehow I remembered Horrible Bosses. I saw it once when it first came out, and I remember thinking what an awful movie. I remembered one scene in particular when they meet a man who calls him self mother F** Jones. Although somewhat humorous the F* word is used quite a bit, making this scene a good one to find a word that is used frequently to bleep out.

This Video Assignment was worth 5 stars.

Carcetti Hates Calling for Money

That Bleep Censor (5 stars)Ā was actually a lot of fun to make! I was watching Season 4 Episode 1 in preparation for my Video Essay, and I thought this scene was another great one to bleep out! The best one would be where Bunk and McNulty we recreating the murder scene in season 1. Amy did a great job bleeping out that scene! So when I watched the scene for the first time I knew that this would be a good scene to bleep out.

I had the episode downloaded from MediaCore and imported it into iMovie. Then I went through the episode to find the specific scene I wanted. In the photo below the scene is where the Green line is. Now granted this whole scene in particular isn’t the greatest, but it works fine. So I had the part that I wanted in the storyboard (where most of the editing takes place). This is mainly where I added the bleep sound to each word. I went through the whole scene and isolated the bad words. I did this by splitting the clip just after the first syllable of the word. Then I split the clip again after the last syllable of that same word. I used the left and right arrows to really hone in on the sound of the word. Then I got the bleep sound from YouTube with my trusty ClipConverter. I used that to cut out the words. Where I split the clip, I placed the sound (where the green is on the storyboard). Then I lowered the volume in each isolated clip with the bad words in them. Now it was mainly finished! all I had to do was share the file itself and upload it to YouTube. iMovie already incorporatedĀ Ā an automatic share to YouTube but I prefer to export the file and upload it from there because I’m already logged into YouTube in my internet Browser.

I really enjoyed making this! I thought it was really cool that I could isolate a specific word itself and bleep it out. It was really cool to use it just to isolate a specific part to the word. Here is the final project!

We Be Gettā€™n Money and $hiiiii

I conquered 5 of the 7 1/2 stars left to complete in week 10 of video with the assignment ‘That Bleeping Censor’. Finally after trial and error with first grasping use of Movie Maker and then technology problems only fixable through the help of IT, I successfully completed this assignment by my lonesome! I imported a video from the HUB library of season 4 episode 2. After trimming the portions of scenes where key characters announced that they didn’t mind be opportunist at any cost, and consistent and exaggerated use of Shiiii by Senator Clay Davis; I turned to sounds. I found sounds which symbolized these colorful statements and layered them in with the video featured below.

That Quacking Censor

I chose to do the 5 star That Bleeping Censor assignment. Immediately after reading the assignment my thoughts jumped straight to the scene where McNulty and Bunk are in an apartment investigating a murder and had a not-so-colorful choice of words for the entire scene. Instead of simply putting a bleeping censor, I thought I would replace the dirty word with a “quack.”

I downloaded the scene on YouTube and uploaded it into Windows Live Movie Maker. This tutorial was pretty helpful. Using the split tool, I muted the volume every time they cursed (stopped counting after 23).

I downloaded the quacking noise from freesound.org here.

There was some extra time in the beginning and the end of the sound so I had to use Audacity to cut it out. There were also a couple point where they cursed several times in a row so I copied the quack three times and made a new clip in Audacity for those moments.

I inserted the quacks in the places I muted the audio. I’m pretty happy with how it came out!

Those Bleeping Idiots!

The task of this assignment was to do your best FCC impression by censoring a movie scene/clip. I searched for quite a while on what movie to do because it had to have a few great scenes with a lot of cursing. I ended up settling on the movie Pineapple Express which I saw a few years ago. There’s a great scene where Dale goes to meet his girlfriend’s parents and ends up getting into a bit of a situation. The scene which is a little over 3 minutes longer had 11 curse words which needed some editing.

I started of by downloading the video of of Youtube using KeepVid which converts them to Mp4s. I then uploaded it to Windows Movie Maker where I did my editing. It was a tricky task to split the film at the right time have it be long enough to insert the censor audio.

I then went to www.freesounds.org where I downloaded two different censor beeps, one which lasted close to a second and another that was about half a second. I then clicked on the split clip and simply added the audio. Sometimes, it was a little too long so I would change the duration.

While this was a time consuming assignment, after a few go rounds I found it to be a simple concept although executing it could be tricky. This was the first big assignment I completed and think it set a good standard for the rest. *** 5 Stars ***

Censored! ā€“ 5 stars

So this assignment was a lot of fun! It also was probably the hardest one I have completed so far. Not only was the process hard to censor a word out but the creative process was hard too. It took me a few days trying to find the perfect video and word to censor out. […]

That Bleeping Crime Scene

One of the more memorable scenes from early on inĀ The Wire is of Bunk and McNulty at the cold crime scene in the apartment where they only say “fuck.” I love it, and think it’s a great, humorous scene. When I saw the That Bleeping Censor assignment, I thought it would be interesting to see how this scene would change if all the profanity was bleeped.

I found the scene on YouTube here and dowloaded it using Clip Converter. Since I knew I’d be editing the audio, I downloaded it both as a video (mp4) and as an audio track (mp3). In iMovie, I created a new event and a new movie as I do for every project and imported the mp4 file. I then opened Audacity and imported the mp3 file. I added bleeping sounds by selecting the section of the audio and choosing Generate > Tone and setting it to Sine wave at 1000 Hz. I did this for each “fuck,” which was quite tedious, depending on how it was said. Once I completed this task, I exported it as an mp3. Back in iMovie, I split the audio from the video, deleted the audio, and imported the edited audio. I then added a title screen at the beginning and credits at the end.

Here is a screenshot of what it looked like once it was all edited together:

I think the bleeps take a lot away from the scene. There’s a beauty to all the different ways they say “fuck” and it really illustrates their various reactions as they go along. “Fuck” is a very versatile word and despite it being considered profane, its placement and the tone in which it is said really shapes our understanding of someone’s reaction or feelings about something.

Here is my final product:

That Bleeping Censor

Original Assignment (5 stars)

The objective for this assignment was to censor a movie scene/clip, using a sound effect. I chose a scene from the movie Casino, where Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro meet up in the desert. That guy Pesci sure does have a foul mouth, lol. I counted 24 swear words, most of them F-bombs. Let the editing begin (I used iMovie). It took me a little while to carefully cut each swear word out of each clip (timing is everything). Half way through, I became more comfortable with the process, maybe even mastered it (haha).

Next, I had to go back and mute each individual clip that I cut. Pretty easy process, I just had to highlight each clip, and select “mute clip” from the drop down menu.

Muting a clip in iMovie.

Muting a clip in iMovie.

Lastly, I had to add my bleep sound effect to each individual clip that was just muted. Again, timing is everything, so I messed around with the placement and time duration of the bleep to get it sounding just right. The bleep effect was much louder than the rest of the audio in the scene, so I had to manually change the volume on each one (from 100, i had to lower the sfx to 15). Following that last step, I played the entire clip over and over until I was satisfied. Title cards were placed at the beginning and end of the scene. One for introducing the title of the scene, and the other for credits.

Although this was a 5 star assignment, it felt like a 3 star assignment because it was rather easy, but at the same time, time consuming (thanks to Joe Pesci and his swearing). Check out the classic scene below from the film, Casino.
