Love in the Time of Coronavirus

Hey, this is Sterling! Maybe this is clickbait since I’m not in a relationship with anyone. However, I thought I’d update my progress on my ‘seconds of the day’ project. Most of my seconds now revolve around my home life, and there is where I find love with my family.

A Day in the Life of Dogs

#ElwayTebowJakePeyton

For video assignments this week, I chose a 3 star assignment to make small videos and pictures of our dogs. It was kind of hard, I had to keep remembering to keep my phone on me to capture their moments, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. They don’t sit very still.

I used my phone to take the pictures and videos.

I used iMovie on my Apple Mac to collaborate and edit the video.

I used iTunes to add music to the video.

It was fun. Enjoy!

86,400 Seconds In A Day

‘Ello folk! This is Sterling. Hope you’re doing well. I’m sure you’ve heard of an app called 1SE, or ‘One Second Everyday’ where you record one second everyday. My friends have been doing it and they hooked me in November 2019. I’ve been doing my best to keep up with it, though there are certainly notable gaps.

Day in my life

3 stars

So for this assignment I had to record a “day in my life video.” This is traditionally what Youtubers do and I always love watching them. It’s similar to my “Where my Shoes take me in day video,” but the focus isn’t on my shoes this time. The assignment required me to record what I did in a day. I recored myself in the morning opening the blinds, getting breakfast, then walking to class, working on my research paper for my senior seminar and my snack break, then making my cup of green tea before bed!

I simply recorded the videos on my phone, uploaded them onto my computer, and edited everything together on iMovie. The song I had over everything is “Sunset Lover” by Petite Biscuit.

The goal of the “A Day In The Life…” assignment was to “Take 3-5 seconds of video at the beginning of each hour or every half hour throughout the day. The time can be adjusted as long as distance between videos is consistent. The point is to experience “A Day in the Life” of YOU and everyone and everything you encounter!”

I made sure to do this assignment over the weekend so that it wouldn’t just consist of me doing homework, walking around campus, and working. The hardest part of this assignment was remembering to take videos throughout the day. I’m not usually a person who has my phone out a lot so it was strange to constantly be taking videos.

This video was taking on Saturday. It was definitely a fun day, one that I am happy to have a video to remember! I am grateful to my friends for putting up with me constantly taking videos of them.

After the day was over, I uploaded all of the videos to my computer and started to edit them using the video editor app that comes with my computer (a Dell that runs Windows 10). Each of the videos was about 5 seconds long, so the video ended up being 1 minute 14 seconds long. I spliced them all together and then added background music that I found on this site.

I downloaded the finished video to my computer and then uploaded it to YouTube. I am really happy with the finished product and will save it to look back on in the future. This assignment was so enjoyable that I will probably to it again sometime just for the fun of it. You can watch the video below!

Stars

I decided to put all of my stars into one post because they’re all hyperlinked to other videos/uploads! This week was INCREDIBLY hard. I spent about 12 hours on assignments this week and thought about withdrawing about 4 times. It sucked. But I prevailed and am now terrified of the rest of the semester. All videos are created with iMovie (except for the boomerang obviously.)

I did the Of Most Importance assignment for 3 stars first. I tweaked it a bit since most of my important people are not with me right now & I wanted to keep it consent. I went with pictures of my most important people & then said a bit about them after. See it here:

Then I did the Get to Know Me assignment for 5 stars. I pretty much just got questions from my own Facebook and my DS106 twitter (thanks Zae) and responded to them. I didn’t want to complicate it with music/effects so I left it as it was. It was SO HARD to upload. My iMovie wouldn’t save it. Then youtube said I couldn’t upload mp4 files (which is wrong.) Then youtube wouldn’t let me sign in. It was a completely unnecessary pain in the butt.

And of course to top it off it won’t embed the video!! Whatever. Just click here.

Then I did a click boomerang of my room even though it is a DISASTER. Click below to view my hot mess. This was 1 star.

Boomerang

Lastly, I put together my A Day in the Life assignment. Since I took videos throughout the day I had to wait until bed to do it. This was worth 3 stars (but should’ve been more in my opinion- it was a lot of work.) The only music I had in my iTunes was Ed Sheeran from like 7th grade so I went with it. Enjoy:

My day started off with my son yelling “MAMA” as usual. Work at 7, get the kids ready for school, walk them to school, and today I had a preschool tour for my son. Videos were frowned upon so I just stuck a picture of him waiting in there. Then we came home, I put him down for a nap, and laid down for 10 min while I waited for my caffeine to kick in. I worked on DS106 assignments for this week an then my son pooped everywhere. Like on the carpet and everything. So I just stuck him in the tub and sterilized everything after he was clean (hence the lysol.) Ian and I spent a few hours outside & at the park. Once he was in bed my mom stayed with him & my best friend and I went to see “A Star is Born” (10/10 recommend but wear waterproof mascara.) And now I am putting this together & will be going to bed!

A Day in the Life

This assignment was to make a day in the life of me! The only problem with that is that I am very boring! I am mostly only ever in class or at work, so my day looks roughly the same all day long, so I didn’t bother to take a new video if my surroundings hadn’t changed. I was having trouble putting the clips together without it looking really awkward so I ended up using an app, but I had to pretend that each clip was a different day so it falsely labeled them with different dates when I imported my clips into this app, and I was not able to find an override for this.

This was the Day in the Life assignment worth three stars.

A Day in the Life… of a College Student

The first assignment I chose to do this week is this one for 3 stars. For this assignment we had to show our day through video, recording 5 minutes every hour of the day.

This assignment wasn’t easy to record, as I had to remember to take a video every hour; if I were to do it again I’d set alarms to remind myself (although those alarms wouldn’t work well when I’m in class). Anyway, I managed to remember most of them, the only thing major I missed was when I arrived on campus at around 2 pm and went to class. I also noticed that my day is quite dull to film, especially since I only had one class and no work that Monday. I swear, occasionally my days are more interesting than this one!

In the video you can see that Monday went as follows. I got up to register for classes for next semester, pet my cat, ate salad, did Abstract Algebra homework, drove to campus for my class, left campus after my class and arrived back at home, worked on Data Mining homework, pet my cat again, ate dinner and had some hot tea, worked on homework for DS106, worked on Data Mining homework again, and went to bed. I suppose even though it’s boring, it accurately represents my distribution of time, mostly doing homework, petting cats, and driving to and from school. I think the idea for this assignment is very neat, and I hope to see some other people doing it too!

To edit the video together for this assignment, I used my copy of Adobe Premiere Elements 14, which I purchased a while ago. First, I’ve had a new laptop since I bought it, so I had to transfer its license to my new laptop, which I’ve been meaning to do for a while anyway. Thankfully I was able to download the program on my new laptop easily to edit the video! Then, I added in my clips I had recorded, editing some of the longer ones to be 5 seconds each. I added in a few simple transitions and music, and then I had the finished product. Really, I only wish I had remembered to use the horizontal view on my iPhone’s camera!

A Day in the Life…

“A Second A Day” has become popular in videos recently. A moderation for this class would be taking 3-5 seconds of video at the begining of each hour or every half hour throughout the day. The time can be adjusted as long as distance between videos is consistent. The point is to experience “A Day in the Life” of YOU and everyone and everything you encounter! To make it easier set an alarm on you phone to remind you at each time interval!
