For this assignment (3.5 stars), I created a video of ocean waves. I started by finding the ocean waves on freesound.org. I also found a person saying relax that I thought would tie into the assignment. I used audacity to add the two audios and then exported them and added them to iMovie. I found two sunset pictures of the ocean and decided to alternate the two with the audio. I downloaded the movie and uploaded it to youtube. I really enjoyed this project. Sometimes when I am stressed I will listen to relaxing music and now I can use my own.
I was pretty excited to work on this last project with my new found awesome editing software. I chose to do a variation of the Serenity Now challenge. I listen to guided mediation on YouTube on a regular basis, so that makes be qualify to create one, right? …..Right?
Fairly repetitive in the process for this one. Y2mate to download YouTube videos. Freesound for musical content. Samsung Galaxy s6 for voice recording. For new skills acquired – I learned to use the VSDC software to separate video and audio files and isolate each for editing, control the decibel levels of individual audio files, and edit a sprite after it had already been combined.
Now come chill out with after this long week – you’ve earned it.
In one of the episodes of the last season os Seinfeld, one of the main characters is advised to repeat “serenity now” as a mantra to ease his high blood pressure. Rather than repeat the phrase in a calm and controlled manner in a way that might help, Frank Costanza yells “SERENITY NOW!” at the top of his lungs whenever he feels stressed, thus defeating the purpose of the mantra.
I decided to create a visual piece of video and audio that would correct Frank’s mistake, and attempt to actually create one of those “serenity videos” that are often seen being played at dentist’s offices, or a spa.
I am very proud of my Serenity Now! video. I used time lapse videos I found and linked them together in Windows Movie maker. I then added music: Only Time by Enya, Serenade by Franz Schubert, and Por ti volare by Andrea Bocelli. The first video is of a rose blooming, the second is of different scenes in nature, and the third is satellite video of the earth. I also added a mini-clip in there that is really fun, but you will have to watch the video to see what it is!
This is my entry for the Serenity Now assignment. I used iMovie to create it. I used a Nikon D3100 with a 50mm lens at f1.8 to capture the scenes. The music is Telefon Tel Aviv, an electronic band. I felt the atmospheric sound of the music complimented the mood of the clips. I hope you enjoy!
For this assignment, I chose to make a Serenity video of Christmas. Nothing puts me in a better mood than remembering Christmas and the warmth and love of that day.
I took videos on youtube to mix together. These videos include, Frosty The Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
I mixed these videos together using Sony Vegas and the plug in for Mozilla Firefox. It gets me in a great mood, Christmas NOW!
My neighborhood at home is really beautiful. It is situated on an old dairy farm that used be called Big Springs Farm, named for the spring that flows right through the neighborhood. The old dairy barn is even still there (you will see it in the video!). The neighborhood was originally designed to be an equestrian neighborhood, so there are quite a few manicured paths that go along the Potomac River. When my brother first saw the place, he said it looked like the Shire from the Lord of the Rings.
It is especially pretty here in the springtime, which is why I knew I wanted to film the creek and the fields here at Big Springs for the Serenity Now assignment. Even better, I was able to do this while riding my horse So really, this was the perfect project for me!
I just took a bunch of nature clips, and using iMovie made it loop through the footage twice. The music I got from Incompetech again, such a useful sight! I will definitely be bookmarking that page. So here it is, a serene spring morning at Big Springs.
this is my version of the serenity now assignment. me personally i LOVE the outdoors and taking photos of scenery. what i did was make a collage of scenic photos and used frank’s ocean’s swim good song as background music to give a light relaxing feel to the pics. i used imovie off my phone to accomplish this.
This is a video assignments where you take several nature clips and put them to peaceful music to create a pleasing background nature still life music video. I chose to make mine a little more awesome then that and decided to make a chronicle of my kayak trip in three still shot videos. Its pretty awesome, you should actually watch it/ put it on in the background while you do stuff. music was taken from youtube and the video was edited in mpeg stream clip audio was edited in audacity and then placed in iTunes, the movie was pieced together and looped in iMovie. enjoy!
I’m a huge fan of the Seinfeld TV show. Despite being in middle school when the show first aired, as I began to understand the world with a bit more cynism and farce as I entered high school, Seinfeld came to be the lens through which I perceived the world of hypocrisy, people behaving poorly, and observational comedy. There was a particular episode during the last season, in which one of the main characters, Frank Costanza, had been diagnosed with having high blood pressure. In an attempt to relieve himself of stress, he is advised to repeat the calming mantra “serenity now” when he feels his stress level rising. In true comedic fashion, whenever Frank begins to feel stressed during the episodes he yells, “SERENITY NOW!” at the top of his lungs, completely negating the calming effects that a peaceful mantra might have, and providing plenty of laughs during the episode.
If Inner Peace truly was available at Target, I think the world would be a much better place.
I often wonder how many people use a calming mantra effectively, and being someone who is far too hyper-aware of media, I’m always drawn to those calming music kiosks you see at many big box retailers like Target. I decided to produce a 10 minute video of calming music and scenery that might actually have some sort of beneficial nature when viewed, and then create a ds106 video assignment out of it. You can watch the video below, or see it on Youtube by following this link.
The nature scenes in the video are very repetitious, which is by choice. I was hoping to produce a variant of the 10 minute “Insane Edition” Youtube challenge, in which a small piece of audio or video is repeated for ridiculous effect, and then copy and pasted for a total of 10 minutes. Many of these videos are nothing more than the same 3 or 4 seconds of video in a constant 10 minute long repetitive loop, making it a challenge to sit through. Since I didn’t feel that the idea of providing serenity would be met with the same structure, I took three video clips that I gathered this last weekend at the Kalamazoo Nature Center, and cut them down to about 52 seconds each. I then repeated those same 3 clips to create the sense of circular passage of time, rather than linear.
I then went hunting over at Soundcloud for a 10 minute piece of ambient music that someone had shared with a creative commons license for resuse, and I found this wonderful gem of a tune by “Psyeck” titled “Elements of Nature“.
The music is very serene, and the imagery coupled with it actually produced a rather calming effect for me. I’ll admit, it’s very simplistic, and in hindsight, I would have gathered more video clips for this, as I didn’t want to rely on “off the shelf” stock footage. I wanted the video to all be mine, reflecting places that I found serene.
So why in the world am I sharing this then? Well for starters, I’m a HUGE fan of using imagery, video, and music to affect the mood of my classroom. I kept several playlists of different music to help coordinate and frame the different periods and activities throughout the day in my class. Peaceful quiet music for reading or independent work time, Classical music for taking tests, and high energy music for group work or bell time. This video would be something I could have used at the end of a long week, or a way to get students to try and “clear” their minds before doing some reflection.
HOWEVER, pushing aside all of those touchy, hippie-like sentiments, an assignment like this might give a teacher an excellent window into their student’s lives. Ask them what calms them, what brings them to their center, and makes them feel safe. Maslow contested that if learners don’t feel comfortable and secure, then higher-order learning objectives would be very difficult to achieve, and asking your students to create something personal like this could help to establish the professional bond that teachers have with learners. It wouldn’t require much class time, and even if you did have students put this project together in class, it would be an amazing way to assess how well they understood emotion and persuasive storytelling through video and other media, a skill that is rapidly becoming necessary in an increasingly digital world.
