Visual Assignment: Find Yourself

Visual Assignment from the DS106 Assignment Bank:
Find Yourself…or…My Own Boat!

*I am currently working my way through my fourth semester of the Information and Learning Technologies master’s program at University of Colorado, Denver.  This is the seventh post within a series of Creative Assignments that I’ve been tasked with completing for a course titled Digital Storytelling.

The design assignment that I chose from the DS106 Assignment Bank is called Find Yourself. It states, “Find your name in the environment around you. Look for your first name, parts of your first name, or even the individual letters that make up your name in the environment around you. Take photos and crop them together. Share. Enjoy!”

I knew immediately that I wanted to do this assignment as soon as I found it.  Having a weird name throughout my life has not been easy.  I’ve had to constantly (every.single.time) correct people’s pronunciation and spelling and I could never find a damn key chain!  (I know you know what I’m talking about…  At the end of every single school field trip, kids would come home with key chains or mugs or pens with their names on them.  Not me.  Never.)

Well, I was lucky enough to spend a summer in Spain when I was 17 and even luckier to come across this gem of a boat.  That, ladies and gentlemen, is my name.  On a boat.  Twice actually.  (Yes, I realized it doesn’t have my capital “A”, but I’ve never liked the stupid capital letter in the middle of my name anyways.)  I was so excited to see my name somewhere for the first (and only) time in my life and even happier that I was a tourist with a camera!

I was perusing through assignments the other day while at work and came across the visual assignment find yourself.

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/find-yourself/

It directs us to find your name in your environment. Didn’t expect this assignment to come up.

I looked behind my shoulder and lo and behold my name appeared! It didn’t actually appear. I’m an ABC manager at Blue and Gray Brewing Company.

After reading the directions on the site, I whipped my phone out and took a picture of my name on the wall.

The picture doesn’t really convey a meaning. It just informs customers they can’t buy beer unless one of the other persons on the form or I am on the premises.

Say my name, ***ch!

Assignment: Find your name in the environment around you. Look for your first name, parts of your first name, or even the individual letters that make up your name in the environment around you. Take photos and crop them together. Share. Enjoy!

I go by the name of Caro mostly, so it was pretty fun when my cousin sent me this photo she took in Venice. With a name like Caroline I feature in an extraordinary number of songs – including those by Neil Diamond, Badloves, Outkast, Concrete Blonde, John Butler Trio, David Gray, Fleetwood Mac… that’s just for starters, hell I just about crashed iTunes with a search. Out in the wild though I don’t see too many references to my name, not anymore anyway. I’m like Bart Simpson in the numberplate shop nowadays, with only “Carolyn” available at best. I constantly get asked whether my name is spelled with a K (Where? Where would you put a K? Who spells it like that?) and a teacher once wrote Carloine on my test paper, a name by which I was called for at least 2 years after by my best friend. I have even been known as Carikube, but that’s only when I was typing without looking at the screen and my right hand was off-centre.

There is a funny story behind this picture, one that involves a cat, 3 ex friends and a friend that i cant live with out. I would tell you the story but thats besides the point. The assignment was to find a place or letters that make up your name, well for me I live 2 blocks from a street with my name. Double whammy its me in the picture too. Two Charlotte’s for the price of one picture, you’re a lucky duck. Im sure i could actually walk around downtown right now and find all the letters in my name, actually just sitting in Hyperion I could spell out my name, but there is just something about having a street with the same name as you that not a large amount of people can have. So i chose to stick with this picture of me and my name.

I didnt really have to do anything special to get this picture, but i guess i could do some background. In order to take this picture i had to choose to go out that night, i had to get dressed and be social, not just hide behind my computer or live my entire life on a soccer field. No instead i got to explore Fredericksburg in the dark. A cat actually lead us to this street and it just so happened that we had a camera, no not one on a phone. I went ahead and climbed on up and click click flash a picture was taken that you now see above.

Find Yourself!

Here is my next Visual Assignment called Find Yourself!

Assignment: For this assignment we had to find our name in the environment around us. We could either use something that had our first name, parts of our first name, or even the individual letters that make up our name in the environment around us.

Process: I decided to use a picture I took when I went to Paris. I took this photo when my tour group was walking through a mall and my teacher recommended that I should snap a picture of it. I love all the different reflections in this the photo and the constrat of colors!

Find Yourself!

MY NAME IS ….

The second Visual Assignment for this week that I chose to do was, “Find Yourself“.

My name Enisa

I chose to this one by clicking on the “try random one” button. I knew that it would be very difficult to find my name anywhere since it is soooooo uncommon. While working on a group project for one of my other classes, my friends suggested making letters with my name and they’d hold it up for me. I have always had issues finding anything that resembles my name and I am usually asked where my name is from and the meaning. Whenever I have wanted to find a bracelet with my name on it …. it has NEVER happened. The meaning of my name “Enisa” (from what I’ve heard and looked up) is “friendly” … So the idea of having my friends hold up my name connects everything pretty well.

I didn’t really need many tools in order to do this one, but if you have an uncommon name like me … and still want to do it… Finding letters everywhere is also a good way of approaching it. I just let my mind wander and thought about how when I was younger I always hated not having my name anywhere or in common with anyone else…. I guess until I accepted the fact that it was Unique and learned to appreciate it.

The first thing I thought of when doing this assignment was, where are there a lot of names?  Well dorm room doors of course! So I went around the dorm and sure enough, there is another Eric living in my dorm.  It is a pretty awesome name if I do say so myself

Find Yourself… On a Perfume Bottle

Findyourself

I won’t lie, since my name is Amber, I’ve been known to run around Bath and Body Works chasing my friends with bottles of “Sensual Amber”, telling them to smell how nice I smell. No shame.

Naturally, I already own… several… bottles of the stuff in various formulas (body lotion, sprays, body wash, etc.) The object of this assignment was to find your name on something in the world. This was again two stars.

So for this I took the spray bottle with the words “sensual amber” on it and stuck a pink Post It behind it so you could read it. I took a picture of it, emailed it to myself, and took it to my friend Gimp. I messed with the satruation so it would stand out a little more and here it is. I regret not using the lotion bottle that is easier to read but live and you learn I suppose.

Oh So Edgy

I thought for sure for this assignment I was going to have to crop together a bunch of random letters to create my name, but I forget sometimes how popular my name has become over recent years (especially with movie stars like Emma Stone, and Emma Watson having the same first name as me). So, randomly stumbled upon my name yesterday (Saturday, the 29th). It was in a Glamour magazine that had Emma Watson on the cover. This obviously isn’t the cover, so, lo-and-behold, this also captures me in my boredom and the reason for why I flipped through a magazine to begin with (I try to avoid these things all together; they are full of so much annoying, and unrealistic shit). I got really excited when I saw my name (without her last name immediately proceeding it) and snapped the photo. Naturally, I had to get the entire title of the article because it makes me sound so cool (and edgy, haha). I tried to leave out the subtitle–it had her whole name in it–thus, is why the picture is at a weirdish angle. Anyways, I thought it looked cool. And finding my name is always a fun thing to do. It’s one of the reasons I really like the word dilemma. I wish I could’ve found that in an advertisement somewhere. But this will have to do.

Over and out.
