ds106: Return To The Scene Of The Crime (3.5 stars)

Firefall

My family has never been big on taking pictures, much less printing them out, so I had to get a bit creative on this one. I have this little collection of post cards I got on a yard sale that feature some gorgeous scenes from all over the United States, and thought it’d look really cool to try and line up the postcards to the scenes they depict. I firstly had to pick a postcard, and that was honestly pretty difficult! With so many options I simply decided to randomly grab a handful, counted them up and randomly picked a number one through six. With that out of the way, I then got to googling around for the scene I wanted, the firefall of Yosemite park. It was somewhat surprising to see one of the first results be the exact postcard I was holding, but after some careful pickings I found a background that fit really well with my card. Angling the card against my computer at the right distance was a bit tricky and my phone refused to focus properly, but overall I really enjoyed this activity!

#TBT to Miami

Oh how I miss Miami. Here is my heart hands in 2012, and the beach from this past summer. Take me back. Here is my link: http://lifebysavanna.com/visual-assignments/tbt-to-my-miami/.

Return to the scene of the Crime! (3 stars)

In all honesty, I was only going to do this if I could find the picture I had in my mind. GUess what?! I found it! The original picture was took when I was about 6 years old (I am 20 now) and it was the last time I can think of where we had that much of my family together in one place at the same time! It was taken on the front steps of my house that I still live in with my parents and it hasn’t changed that much in all honesty, which makes the framing of the current location that much more noticeable! This photo just means so much to me because of the memories and the ideals that I have grown up with to keep family close to your heart! ByoGFsnIYAEsTKS

Returning to the Scene of the CRIME! (3 Stars)

This assignment was intriguing to me in the sense we had to go through old pictures which brought back a lot of great memories from my childhood. The only problem with doing this assignment was figuring out what picture I wanted to use.

After a lot of thought I decided go with a picture of my sister and I on our first day of school! This is always an exciting point in every kids life as they begin to ride the big yellow bus. This picture reminds me of all the emotions that went into a kid that was going to school for the first day of the new year.

bus

The thing about this picture and place, is every year on the first day back to school my mother would always take a picture of my sisters and I at our front door right before the bus came. Another reason I choose this picture is because of all the the changes that have been made to out front door. As you can see in the old picture it was just a green screen and door. Now as you can see it is now a white screen and door. You can also see the columns that now hold up roof on our front door and lastly the changes to the windows and the designs that are in them now. I feel the this picture symbolizes the growth process not just of us, but of changes and growth our house has gone through as well.

Scene of the Crime

The process for this assignment was pretty simple. All I did was took the old picture went back to where it was taken. Then you take the old photo and take a picture of it in front of the “Scene of the Crime.” After that took the camera and connected it the computer and uploaded the photo into my computer files. From there I was able to access it through my media library and post it to my blog.

An Ode to Goolrick***

This three star visual assignment really made me think about my story as a college student. I knew right away that I was going to do a picture from freshman year, mainly because I have pictures printed out from then and I also needed the location to be in Fredericksburg since I’m not going to New Jersey for a while. I took a look at the pictures that I had printed out and was suddenly brought back with tons of memories from my first year at college and my first year away from home. But I really wanted to pay a tribute to Goolrick Gymnasium. So here it is, my ‘ode’ to Goolrick.

So if you have been to the beautiful campus of the University of Mary Washington you may be familiar with Goolrick Gym. I know that I know almost every nook and cranny of that place. Being on the volleyball team for four years the gym has been a huge part of my college career, even after the Anderson Center was built. So let’s go back in time to three and a half years ago when I was just starting my college career out. After having no competitive experience playing volleyball I decided to try out and hope I made the team. I called my mother almost every day telling her about our three-a-day practices and explained how I was not anywhere close to the level that the girls trying out were. After a few grueling days of being unable to properly walk I finally found out I made the team (which is a funny story in itself). Success was mine, but I still was no where near the level that these girls were playing at. It was in Goolrick I had my first college mental breakdown, it was in Goolrick where I made friends that I’ll have for the rest of my life, it was in Goolrick where I had a team that was actually a family, and most importantly it was in Goolrick where we beat Salisbury University in the conference semi finals to close out the gym for the last time. Now there is the Anderson Center which is big and brand new and really amazing in so many ways, but to me Goolrick represents who I was when I got to school, kind of overlooked and trying to just blend in. Now, I too have developed not only as a player, but as a person as well; and I owe that all to Goolrick. So maybe it was just me being sentimental because it was basketball’s senior night tonight, or maybe this project gave me the opportunity to reflect on my time as a collegiate athlete, but I once again returned to the place where it all started, Goolrick.
Goolrick

Believe it or not, this picture was kind of hard to get. Getting the angle just right was a challenge and I was trying to match up the eagle on the middle of the courts together. I took a few different pictures by showing more of one side than the other, but this one was the one that I liked the best.

Hope you enjoyed,

Then and Now

My kids. The trees.  Everything.  Except for that bench.  It’s so much smaller than I remember!

Just three years

Once upon a time, my kids were nowhere close to being able to reach the ground on this bench.  When we took this picture, Justin and I had barely been together for a few months (if that). This was our first summer together. Of course, at that time, we felt our kids were huge – weren’t they just babies?? This was one of the times when we were letting the kids get to know each other, and so we went on this tame little hike (mostly;) to spend some time together. The kids had wasted no time bonding – they had instantly loved and cared for each other just as much as their parents had. :) When I saw this little bench, I desperately wanted a picture of them on it. Kayla couldn’t quite get her little self up there, so Elijah helped her climb up.  They’re only 8 months apart, but at this age, that still represents quite a difference (and even now, the difference is still significant). Visiting this spot again on Sunday afternoon, Kayla towered over that little bench.  And do you see those trees?!  They’re not perfectly lined up (that’s harder than you  might think!), but you can see the size of the trees then versus now.  WOW.

I guess when 3 years is half of your life, you will be double the size of the original shot, huh?  Still.  The memories. And oh, my heart.

Very mixed feelings about having done this assignment.  It’s very emotional, and it gets major bonus points for that.  But while I’m in awe over the growth of the trees and the kids, and amused at the difference in the vegetation from the early summer shot versus the early fall shot, it still was a heck of a reminder of how big my kids are getting. At the same time, it’s fun to remember this time, when our new life together (all four of us) was just beginning.

I guess maybe I should remember that 6 years from now, I’ll be feeling the exact same way about their sizes today versus then. :) Maybe I should focus on how small their little hands are now as compared to what they will be, as opposed to how big they are now compared to what they once were.

This was the Return to the Scene of the Crime Visual Assignment, worth three out of my ten stars this week.  I just used my iPhone camera for this one.  The work here was in the planning and the positioning (and that was enough, to be sure).

3 Stars- Returning to the Scene of the Crime

Snowy winter vs Warm fall

This was a picture that I took back during the snowstorm that happened my freshman year (January 2010?).  It was taken right outside of Seacobeck dining hall.  I had never actually realized how much has changed in the 2-ish years that have passed since then.  That bush that was covered in snow is no longer there (actually it may have been an evergreen tree, but it’s still not there anymore).

I had a lot of trouble getting the perspective right.  I just couldn’t find the exact spot where I stood that made the picture like that.  All that being said, I really enjoy the nature of this photo and the stark contrast between a snowy winter and a warm autumn day.

7/10 Stars down, 3 to go!

Return to the Scene for the Crime

Hey Eagles! Did you know that Campus Walk was nonexistent until 1985?! That’s right the school used to have a road going right down the middle of campus! Originally called Campus Drive, it bricked over in order to promote a pedestrian friendly and smaller community. The transformation was met by tons of protest, but ultimately it was seen as a wonderfully addition.  For all you eagles complaining about the sunken gates being closed and having to drive around the perimeter of Mary Washington…blame those who voted in favor of bricking up Campus Drive. However those of you who chose this school for is cozy, comfortable, close-knit community, you can praise our ancestors who vote in favor of Campus Walk.

I couldn’t decide between the two of these pictures. One is of just me, at 2 years old. The other is of my brother and I before school one year, don’t know how long ago.
