a collage – visual assignment –

It’s time for arts and crafts kids!

For this visual assignment, I had initially wanted to do this IRL with actual materials like doilies, flowers, and what not. Unfortunately, time did not permit the shopping for said materials and so I chose to do it digitally:

Collage

A little part of me is happy I decided to stick to digital media for this…

Let me explain a few items on this board, if you don’t mind;

The polaroid to the top left corner is from when a friend and I visited the Hirshhorn Museum for the Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirrors exhibition. I love this photo and cherish it because it feels like we’re in space.

The polaroid in the bottom right corner is of my fiancé, Anthony, and I during our last trip to Disneyland. It was my first time visiting after moving away from California in 2007.

Of course you will notice a lot of anime references; Sailor Moon, Gundam SEED, YURI on ICE!!!, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. All animes that I have a lot of love and dedication towards. There’s also my girl, Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers and a cute feminine Pikachu because she’s looking extra classy. There is also a drawing of me! It’s a commissioned piece by a local artist whom I love dearly. She’s drawn a lot of things for me and friends.

If you have any questions on anything else on the board; please feel free to leave a comment below and I will be more than happy to explain!

Thanks for stopping by and I’ll see ya’ll tomorrow.

So You Think You Know Me

This is my first Visual Assignment, the assignment is called You in Collage Form. You were supposed to find pictures, meme’s, words etc that describe you. I chose four main words and photos that I felt describe me best. The first one is a quote that I live by which is “I refuse to sink” I love that quote because it reminds me that I can do it. I’ve been having trouble the last couple months in one of my classes and I just keep telling myself I refuse to sink, almost meaning in my head that I refuse to give up or fail. The next thing I chose was smart because even though I feel dumb as a box of rocks sometimes when it comes to programming I know that I’m smart and one day will understand it if I keep trying. The third one was the word Family, Family is very important to me and I am very close with most of my family. Even though we have our fair share of problems (but really who doesn’t?) I know that they are always there for me and have my back. The last thing I chose to describe myself is love because I just feel like it’s a beautiful thing. It makes me happy to see people in love, or the love between parents and children, or even people and their animals, I may be weird for that but who cares haha.

The way I created this collage was an app on my iphone called LiveCollage which I use very often. I used google images to find the images that I used for this collage.

Summer Memories

Summer Subway Art

In our ILT 5340 class, we were given the freedom to choose any project from the DS106 Assignment Bank and focus on our chosen theme for the semester.  I chose Visual Assignment 1890, You In Collage Form.  The instructions were to make a collage of images, words or both that are special to you.

I chose to brainstorm some words and places we had been this summer as we Explored Our Own Backyard.  This was a fun activity!  I had just read our TA’s blog (Lisa Dise) about finding our voice in our work this week and was inspired to find words that described or triggered memories of our special outings from the summer.  I also love subway art and decided to explore the different fonts that also helped describe the “feeling” behind the words.

I used PicMonkey (we are a “thing” now) and experimented with the different fonts and directions of the text to create a very busy, but visual, reminder of our adventures.  I made the background black and the letters white so I could eventually take this to Staples and get an engineering print made.  I will then decoupage it onto a canvas and viola – artwork and memories.

I Need Vitamin Sea: Whining and Collage-Making

Summer always worsens my persistent cabin fever and wanderlust, especially for the seaside with its unique charm. I don’t know if I can wait until August for my “Vitamin Sea” after scrolling through all these beautiful pictures on Pinterest! But at the moment I am trapped inside, working on my projects for Digital Storytelling. Which is why I immediately chose the “You In Collage Form” Assignment from the Visual Assignment Bank, thinking of the vacation ideas I was pinning earlier (to see some, check out my travel-themed Pinterest board “Dream Passport”).

I was inspired by the casual layout that Pinterest provides to structure each board, arranging the different sized Pins so that they snap into preset spaces of varying standard sizes. However, after trying five different online collage makers, I could not recreate that effect. So I found that my best approximation was making a “PowerPoint” (actually using the Google Drive software’s Google Slides, free online with a Gmail account) that is sized to be a 3′ x 4′ poster so  I could fit everything in. If printing posters weren’t so expensive, I would actually love to print it. Then I simply added photos via url, which works seamlessly with Google Chrome’s menu option “Copy link address” and probably just as well with other browsers. I resized photos to optimize their clarity, as well as based on the importance they had, and arranged them around the frame of the background. The only involved photo-editing was turning the picture I chose for the center black and white, and cutting it into the shape of a heart, so it would stand out from the rest and break the block-y appearance it had. Finally, to make the background a little more subdued, I increased the transparency of the background image 10%, centered it, and made the slide color dark blue. And voila, a fun collage that tells you something about me.

Still wish I was going to the beach though.

Collage FORM

This was a great assignment as I got to reflect and make a poster about me and my interests. I included words and photos of things that are important to me such as professional development, education, fitness/ health and more. It allows me to be creative as well.

Submitted Assignment #2

This is my second assignment that I have submitted for the semester. It is a pretty simple and open ended assignment. You make a collage that defines your personality or something else with meaning to you.

The prompt is:

This comes with simple instructions. Make a collage with images and words that describe you or mean something to you. This can either be done with actual materials like paper and magazine clips or by taking images, memes, and fonts from the Internet. Be careful to focus on the design of the collage, not just putting things together in a big glob. Have fun and be creative!

The Work Itself

Story Behind the Story

I needed more decorations for my extremely bland dorm room so I decided to make my own wall decorations. I remember doing this a long time ago as something fun for my friends and I to do so I thought it would be fun once again. I wanted to make sure that it included words and images that said something about me or my opinions.

Narrating the Process

For this assignment I used canvas board, paint, and a huge stack of old magazines. I flipped through each magazine looking for words or images within it that resonated with me.
