Shocking!

Victoire Absinthe may be a dame, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have political ideals! She’s a red blooded American at heart- her brother was in the military, and she can’t help but agree with the “Better Dead Than Red” propaganda swelling through out the country. She saw this little number on the side of a convince store in the outskirts of Milwaukee. She was walking back to her hotel from the dance hall, where she worked periodically. She was tired of writing, and wanted to try something different.

In creating this image, I fundamentally didn’t want to do something boring. I like the shocking, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I feel that forcing something usually doesn’t work. So! I found the background image (while looking for desktop images to be perfectly honest) and I found some Americana images and it just kind of came together. I use http://www.picmonkey.com when I edit pictures. It’s actually really nice, easy, and fun.

Design To Shock George!!

Designed to Shock! GeorgeI chose this assignment design to shock (4 Points) because I thought it would be interesting. George will be watching – always watching! He watches his business, wife, his customers, his clients he protects, the streets and everything else he sees going on around him and his family.

During my childhood we were always watched very close when my Uncle George was around. We weren’t allowed to hear his storytelling for some reason or another. It use to creep me out because we would be in another room playing and you could feel his eyes watching you.

I tend to get frustrated with myself more often than not. I always feel like I am my own worst enemy. I am the only person standing in my way of happiness. This image is a reflection of the battle within.  Sometimes when it’s time to get something done the darker side of me takes control and puts my innocent side in it’s place.

I sat down in my bed thinking of ideas of what I could do to create a “shocking message.” I found myself in a great debate with myself once again.  I would come up with something that I thought to be a good idea, and then just as quickly I would dismiss it as not being good enough.  After doing that a couple times I decided to try and come up with a way to portray that in a shocking manner.  In the same way that I kept shooting down my own ideas as quickly as I could think of them, I decided that I would create a picture where I am shooting down myself.

This piece is a composite of eight different images into one. First, I placed my camera on a tripod and attached a remote so I would be able to take pictures of myself efficiently. I envisioned what part of me would love to do with the other during one of my heated inner arguments and posed accordingly. After taking these pictures I realized I had certain limitations on my props and environment. To make up for these limitations I turned to google and I found six other images. With all my images in hand I then opened my dear friend photoshop. I started by taking each individual picture and erasing what I didn’t need. After that I coordinated and placed all the images together using layers. From there I tried to make the image as seamless as I could by burning, dodging, transforming, applying filters and color enhancements, and other various actions. I later used the brush tool to make the image seem a bit more magical. In the end I felt the image accurately portrayed how I feel about myself and my long lasting inner debates.

Final Project

Photoshop is probably my favorite tool that we used this semester. I always wanted to learn how to add words to pics and how to merge pics together and I finally did. For my final project I decided to make a PSA which was originally apart of an DS106 visual assignment. The assignment called for me to merge two images together so I found an image of an iPhone and a car crash. I wanted to make my PSA on texting and driving because there’s been a huge increase in fatalities because of it.

The image of the car crash looks like a regular photo from your iPhone but, I wanted to make it look like the person who was driving was looking ahead at this image of themselves. This PSA is trying to say that if you don’t keep your eyes on the road then you can end up like this.

Dreams and schemes.

Alright.. this is the first time doing something like this… Believe it or not, i’ve never edited two pictures together. I now know what Ira Glass meant in this video. He said that things wont come out the way you want. At first i thought that was silly, but not i realize how ridiculous it is..

Dont take this is a surrender.. just a little defeat, but ill get back to that standard, HUA groove.

This photo, despite the shitty and poorly made quality, really means a lot to me. I might be speaking out of hypocrisy but who isnt? My generation is the generation that sells out. They’re too afraid to follow their dreams. And i mean practical ones, not being superman. I have so many friends with raw talent but they’re told they cant do it because of financial issues, or its risky. Whats life without risks? Whats life without a dream?

Week 4 Summary

This week we learned a lot about creative commons (CC) on the internet that allows others to use creative works legally to upload and share, and to also complete two more assignments (either from the visual or design bank) for a total of 10 stars. For both visual and design assignments, I used Pixlr because its much easier to use rather than Photo Shop. I loved creating both images because its important to me and means something.

For my design assignment I created a bumper sticker. I want to become a broadcast journalist some day and this sticker would look amazing on the rear of my car or even up on the wall in my room. It’s not a typical boring bumper sticker that some cars have. I love the black and white color. I would be proud to have this on my car.

MY BUMPER STICKER

For my visual assignment Design to Shock, I wanted to create a strong message about wearing animal fur. I am against animal cruelty and strongly ANTI-FUR! The photos are graphic but I chose them because its strong, bold, and it can capture anyone’s attention. The images on the right are foxes skinned for their fur, and on the left an image of a dog (man’s best friend) if he/she were to be skinned for their fur. It just sends that message of: DON’T WEAR FUR!

Design to Shock

Using Photoshop or Gimp, combine at least two images (you may also use text) to create a shocking message.
