80s Search Engine

This assignment I chose was called Personal Search Engine where you are suppose to customize and create your own search engine. The search engine I created is called BButterball. For this search engine, I created a logo for it, and here it is.

My idea with this logo was to relate it to the 80s theme, and use a tech style font because its a search engine. Therefore, I used the typewriter font. I used the teal colored lettering and an antique white background because that seems to fit in with the 80s tech theme as well. As far as logistics go, I created the search engine using Google Custom Search Engine. It was not that hard to create because there are simple step by step instructions for creating a custom search engine with Google, and this a very basic start to creating one. There are many endless options when it comes to customizing it through Google. I did have a little hiccup in uploading my logo when customizing my search engine because you have to create a url for your image by using an image hosting site, and it took me a while to find an image hosting site that was free and worked properly for the purposes that I needed it for. I eventually found one that worked, so I ended up using ImageShack. Overall, this assignment was great learning experience for me, and it allowed me improve my technology skills.

Mayonnaise Search

I wanted to experiment some more with X-Ray Goggles so I decided to take on the Personal Search Engine assignment.  I decided to make mine somewhat ridiculous, so… some backstory.  For years I have used the phrase, “Mayonnaise, peanuts, and cucumbers,” as an exclamation of frustration.  “Mayonnaise” for short, when the situation is only minimally frustrating.  So I decided to create the Mayonnaise search, with natural derivations such as Mmail, etc.  I also altered the “I’m feeling lucky” button to give you options such as, “I’m feeling peanuts.”  The hardest alteration was to adjust the name of the search itself, as Google was placed as an image.  Luckily I was able to erase the image and add my title as a heading.  Other personalizations included putting some science and politics search tabs towards the bottom, and being more forceful in encouraging citizens to vote.  Ultimately this was a fun exercise that again emphasized the malleability of the Internet.  The full site can be seen here.

Personal Search Engine (3.5 stars)

For this assignment I decided to create a search engine for students. I couldn’t figure out how to change the Bing logo, but I went ahead and changed all the other text on the website. This assignment wasn’t too hard so I give it 3.5 stars. If only a search engine like this actually existed! Perhaps that’s the next million dollar idea. X-ray Goggles is a really cool tool, I plan on using it pretty often to remix other sites!

Frequently Asked Questions

The three and a half star assignment Personal Search Engine wasn’t too hard to complete.

I used X-Ray Goggles to alter a preexisting search engine.

The google search page was edited to resemble my product seen above.

I played with the page until it was pretty bare, and I added a couple icons. In reality the icons represent nothing. I just threw them there for scenery. When clicked on, they don’t actually link to anything. All of the other buttons should be functional and self explanatory.

I changed the Google image to Frequently Asked Questions because Google has transformed from a search engine where relevant links pop up in response to queries to an engine that can almost certainly answer questions you type into it.

Help Me

For this assignment I decided to create my own search engine. I used the X-Ray Goggles and remade the Google page. It was pretty complicated because I could not for the life of me figure out how to change the Google logo, so now it’s a dingy little button. But I did have fun changing all the smaller tabs. The search engine is designed for college students who have procrastinated way too much this semester and need a hand in finding answers online. I did like making it though and hope you guys like reading what I changed everything to.

Help ME!

This assignment was worth 3.5 stars.

Personal Search Engine

Create your own search engine! Make it personal, funny, interesting. I recommend using either x-ray goggles, or firebug through firefox. The downside of using firebug is that it is more difficult to use, easier to loose your work, and you have to download firefox and firebug. So I strongly recommend using X-ray goggles. You simply drag it into your bookmarks and start editing. When you are finished click publish, and copy the url that it generates for you.
