buzzfeed? more like buzzkill!

ft! some spoilers to the Heathers movie (& musicals because they follow the same plot)!

ft: triggers ( brief mentions of murder, suicide, bombs)

The assignment? make a buzzfeed personality quiz relating to our theme! I decided to stick with the movie Heathers because it makes me happy, is just super interesting, and reminds me of this other Top Notch assignment I did! The characters I chose to include as results for the quiz were Veronica, Heather Chandler, Heather Mcnamara, JD, and Betty Finn. I left out Heather Duke because she is essentially just a mix of the other two Heathers and thus not worth including (disagree? lemme know!).

So I tried installing a plugin to get the quiz embedded but it didn’t work so here’s a link plus a screenshot of my funky-fresh Buzzfeed quiz

This was a really fun one because I, like many, am fascinated with Buzzfeed quizzes and finding out what kind of pop-tart (smores), or barbie (80’s fitness barbie), or candy (twix) I am, especially when I have other things to be doing- like writing up my latest ds106 assignment! One thing that I did struggle with was trying to come up with more positive characteristics for each person; some characters, like Betty Finn, are complete sweethearts and its easy to come up with a pleasant ending. Other characters, like JD, who killed 3 people and tried to blow up the school, are harder to find redeeming qualities in. I ended up going with a “glittering generalities” -type vibe with some of the more irredeemable characters, still basing the description off of their personality, but breaking down their personality into bare essentials that are nicer than “pyromaniac and also murderer”.

Another thing I struggled with what figuring out what questions would logically lead to each character. And although I know the favorite color question is overrated and doesn’t really tell anybody anything about personality, its such an integral part of the Heathers motif and vibe that i just had to. And I do not regret it. Thus, the questions end up being a little bit jumpy, some are deeper, asking about humanity and life goals, whereas some are shallower, asking about favorite colors.

To make this quiz, I started by deciding how many and who would be my end result characters. I chose Veronica because she is the protagonist and I love her, JD because he is an integral part of the story and has a very distinct personality, Betty Finn because she is one of two purely and truly good characters in the films (the other being Martha Dunstock), and Heathers Chandler and Mcnamara because of their distinct personalities. From there, I just brainstormed questions until I felt good about my number (enough for a reasonable quiz, not so much that it became boring) and then started coming up with answers! The Buzzfeed quiz-making set-up is very nice to use and makes the whole process super smooth, 10/10 recommend. The only issue is that today (Friday, January 24, 1am) I cannot figure out how to embed the actual quiz into this post. Alas poor Yorick. We’ll see if I figure it out. If not, anybody have any ideas? If you do, pls share im desperate

What Type of Flower are You?

Ok so this was really fun to me I made a quiz about what type of flower you could be based off your personality!

First thing though Buzzfeed is an absolute pain to work with, my end result was awesome! Check out the link to my flower quiz. I attached the link to the quiz below!

The making of the quiz wasn’t that hard Buzzfeed has a pretty neat set up with a bunch of different templates. All i had to do was come up with the question and insert them here and there.

I am not sure why, but it would not let me embed the website into my blog. I have recently been on a Grey’s Anatomy kick and decided to make the quiz on the characters.

Greece. I have been there once and stayed for five months. I was there for work and was not able to explore much. I would love to be able to explore through all the non tourist spots.

Which Rogue Argent Are You?

For my first web assignment, I created a BuzzFeed quiz that helps the quiz-taker determine which Rogue Agent (from our radio show) they are.

In order to create the quiz questions, I went through my group’s google doc to find the commonalities that would allow for the best questions. This was a fun tie in for our radio show, and a nice way to say goodbye to our group.

I made thumbnails for each Rogue agent and a thumbnail for the quiz. I created all thumbnail images on Canva, which has been such a lifesaver this semester!

I highly recommend any other student make their own BuzzFeed quiz, it was relatively easy and didn’t take much time.

Unfortunately, my blog doesn’t allow me to embed the quiz, even with plug-ins.

You can find the quiz here!

Would Wisteria Like You? (Assignment Bank #19)

Buzzfeed Personality Quiz

Have you taken one of those fun personality quizzes on Buzzfeed? Now make your own! Sign in with Buzzfeed to create a community account (you can use gmail). Then start making a quiz for people to find out which character they are. Use any characters you like. There must be at least 3 results with descriptions and at least 6 questions. Be sure to include photographs as well. Once you have made the page publish it and share.

For this assignment, I created a Buzzfeed quiz centered around my character for this class, Wisteria! In it, I ask the most important question of all: Would Wisteria Like You?

BEHIND THE SCENES

I was initially hesitant to choose this option for my Assignment Bank, since it’d been a while since I created a quiz. It was something I used to do when I was younger, back in the days of Quizzilla–an old defunct trivia site. But, an idea came to my mind this morning, and so I had to follow through!

Overall, creating this was a very fun experience, if not a little taxing! It took me a couple hours to draw all the pictures necessary, and some time to come up with questions. But, I hope that the end result is well worth the stars!

STEPS TO SUCCESS

— Make Buzzfeed Account

— Begin making the Quick Quiz

— Writing down all the of results, the options, the questions, the flavor text

— Drawing all of the pictures

— Publishing the quiz

— Sharing it with friends (and on Twitter)

— Typing about it in this textbox.

And that’s about it! Overall this assignment was really fun, and I look forward to doing something like it someday!

Take this quiz to see how well you know me

Click the link above and see if you know my daily activities. This 4 star web assignment bank activity will be a quick quiz to see how well you know me. I don’t know you and you get a lot of the questions right, that is a little creepy but its okay! It’s a 6 question quiz with images and a few descriptions to why I chose those answers. I hoe you enjoy it, have fun!

My Buzzfeed Personality Quiz

Hey there everyone! I’m back again with another post updating you on my weekly progress. In my other update post, I mentioned that I had been battling the BuzzFeed quiz maker. I’ve now put about two hours of effort into getting my personality-career quiz post to work, but I’m waving the white flag. It seems to me that only some of my question’s answers are going to post as they should. I’ve sent an email over to the team at BuzzFeed to see if there’s any guidance they can give me on the matter. As I wait, I consider posting screenshots to prove that I have questions and answer options written out for all of my quiz’s questions. I think that I’m going to hold off for now, though- if the end of the week comes and there’s still no dice on making my quiz work, I’ll post the screenshots.

As you can see on my quiz if you click it, it almost works. I have no idea why it is selectively showing some answer options, but not others. Your guess is as good as mine, or better. If you’ve experienced this problem and know how to work around it, please leave a comment down below!

My reservation lies in the fact that I do not want to post the quiz’s questions and answers yet because the quiz-building interface would give away what career you would also be selecting an answer for. As you would expect, I took a comical approach to my quiz in both the questions, answers, and also the career results. Because of this, I would hate to ruin the punchline of something that could be pretty funny if it was working properly. For now, try that link, and if it works, great! If it does not, keep your fingers crossed, and know that I’ve emailed BuzzFeed and hopefully it’ll be up (and running properly) soon!

Most of these views are by me, trying to see if my attempts on the back-end of the quiz builder fixed the problem in the front. Click the link to see what I mean.

Hopefully, my quiz will be working ASAP! This assignment was worth 4 stars, and almost three hours of effort, so you better believe I’m going to make it work!

UPDATE: Checked the FAQ, and apparently this is normal..? Not exactly the same issue, but it’s probably safe to say that they’re related. Time will tell!

Walking Dead Quiz

For this assignment I created my very own Buzzfeed quiz. I wanted to make something I was passionate about so I decided to make it a Walking Dead themed quiz. I kept the questions within the realm of the show and universe and used answers that related to the characters. The quiz asks questions about zombie apocalypse scenarios and then matches you with what character you are base on your answers. In all I enjoyed this assignment, It didn’t take me too long to create because of my previous knowledge and I enjoyed making the questions and matching them with specific characters.

All My Friends are Winemoms

When I came across the Buzzfeed quiz assignment, I got so excited. I love buzzfeed personality quizzes. My boyfriend mocks me relentlessly for it. I had so many ideas for what to do, it took me a while to narrow them down. Finally I decided on a theme – the moms from my mom’s bookclub.

I’m fascinated by my mom’s bookclub for a couple reasons. It’s relevant, because “wine-mom” culture is so in with the kids these days. Also, the bookclub moms are all such perfect stereotypes.  A friend of mine from highschool also has a mom in bookclub, so he and I discuss it a lot. All of the quiz results are based off of different women I know from the bookclub (names have been changed of course).

Go ahead and take the quiz!

Once I created my Buzzfeed community account, I was able to begin. I started with descriptions of my results, all pulling from big personalities in the bookclub. I exaggerated and fictionalized a bit for comedic effect. Then I went through and developed my questions. The questions were pretty easy – I pulled from the elements of bookclub I find entertaining, like the stereotypical jobs these women hold and the non-book related reasons they joined bookclub. I was surprised by how much I had to work with while writing the questions. I downloaded images to embellish the quiz and make it more fun for the audience, and with that, I published it.

The interesting part is what happened next. I noticed the next morning, while sending the link to my cousin for her to take, that the thumbnail photo was different from the one I uploaded originally. I clicked the link, and found that most of the stock photos I used had been replaced with licensed images Buzzfeed has the rights to (which was kind of frustrating, considering the fact that downloading those pictures was the most time-consuming part of the process). My description of the quiz has been updated to something a little more sassy. When I looked at the top of the page, I saw my quiz was pinned to the front page! I logged onto Twitter, and saw that two Buzzfeed editors followed me, and another one tweeted at me, congratulating me on the quiz.

When I logged into my email, I found the following message.

All in all, I’m forced to conclude that this assignment was a success. Not only did it get popular, but my friends had a lot of fun taking the quiz (they’re mostly winemoms, apparently).

What Kind of Spy are You?

This assignment was pretty fun. I had done something similar before but this one is now connected to the spy theme. This one predicts what sort of spy you are, either a badass or a weird one. The badass being more like Jason Bourne and the weird one is equal to Johnny English.  The quiz may be found here.

The more and more I do this stuff I’m surprised with how difficult it is to come up with some quality questions and answers. On the surface it seems very easy and straightforward. Just ask some questions right? Well since it is going on Buzzfeed the questions need to have some sort of fun factor, plus the answer choices can’t be boring either. But with enough head scratching I eventually figured something out.

The layout is pretty easy to follow and has directions each step of the way. The hardest part is being creative and to me that doesn’t really come naturally.
