Alternative Book Covers (tutorial)

For this assignment i used Gimp. I did a Google search of the book cover of my choosing ( i used my sister’s keeper). I saved the image to my computer and then opened it in Gimp. After opening the image i used the erasing tool to remove the image that was at the bottom of the cover. After the image was completely removed i used the another image that i chose from google and faded it in, as to kind of make the image seem a little distant.

Here is the finished product.

Screencast tutorials for Alternative Book Cover assignment

As promised yesterday, I did two screencasts for the Alternative Book Cover assignment, one for photoshop users and one for GIMP users. What you will get from these tutorials is that 1) I, too, am a novice at these applications, and 2) these design assignments are mostly about the conception—keep it simple if you are having time or technical issues.

Here is the tutorial for Photoshop (which is palatable at 7 minutes):

Here is the tutorial for GIMP (which runs way too long at 12 minutes):

Alternative Book Covers

Take a title of a well-known book and re-design the cover to suggest something entirely different. For example, the book cover for Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (an apocalyptic novel about a father and son facing the end of the world) is reframed as a feel-good book about effective parenting (see image). Original idea found through this design contest on Book Ninja in 2008.
