Popcorn Tutoring

Tutorial using Popcorn Maker

1. Find your media!

I used the DS106 media bin. I looked around for a few minutes and tried to connect pieces. If you’re limited in your media, like I was, I would try looking for the sounds/video clips first since those will usually be the most scarce. I found two sound clips: birds chirping + a clip with fire burning something then a woman’s scream. With those two in mind, I looked at the photos and images and tried to build a story around it.

2. Upload the media somewhere.

To use audio and video with  Popcorn Maker, you have to upload the media to YouTube or SoundCloud. I only used sound, so I uploaded both of them to SoundCloud.

For the images, I found that Popcorn Maker was being moody and kept rotating my images in weird ways. So, to remedy this, I uploaded them to Imageshack. You can use whichever site works best for you, though.

3. Once you have your media uploaded, you go to the Popcorn Maker site and hit the Start a Project button to create a new piece.

4. Add your music and video first under the Media tab. This way, you have somewhere to put your pictures so they can relate to the music/sounds.

5. Add your images under the Events tab.

Because my images were rather small on the preview, I enlarged them by clicking and dragging the corners.

6. Arrange your images to create your story on the timeline.

7. Once you are finished, you hit save, and voila!  A finished Popcorn Maker story.

That’s why we have signs.

My next assignment this week was to recycle some old media from DS106.

We had to use five different pieces of media and two different kinds (image, audio, or video).

I chose six photos and two sound clips.

I didn’t want to include text, so I hope the story comes across anyways. I used pictures from campus because I’m feeling rather sad about graduating — even though I’ll be living on campus next year, I won’t be taking classes here. So a female student is walking on campus to get to her class on a beautiful day. She parks her bike under the same sign every day. One day, she comes back and sees it has been burnt up by a smoker and screams!

Tutorial for Recycled media

Recycle the media

During the Fall 2012 iteration of ds106 taught at UMW, we collected media from students that was unused in their previous work uploaded to http://dropitto.me/ds106phonar (the password was “photos4life” newly added media might take some time to be moved- we have to feed the squirrels that do this manual labor). The content was migrated to a public download site, which contains at least 150 images, audio and video http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO.

Your task for this assignment is to mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, imahe and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content. What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?

This was a 3 star worth assignment.

Tutorial:

Recycle the Media Tutorial

Here is a tutorial for someone who needs help to make a video for this assignment:

This is a 3 star assignment

TUTORIAL:

The first thing you have to do is go to the website: http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO  This is where you can see all the recycled media that you can choose from.  What I did was pick two sounds and six pictures, that related to taking a nature walk.  But this is the part of the assignment where you can be creative in your own way.  Find any kind of combination of 7 different media types that go together.  I recommend making a video of all the images and sounds that you collected.  To download this media to your computer click on the image and in the right hand corner there is an arrow facing downward.  Then you will be able to save any of the media to your computer so you can use it in your video.

tutorial

The rest of this tutorial deals with using Windows Movie Maker:

The first thing you will have to do is open Window’s Movie Maker.  The next thing you will have to do is add photos to your video.  After that you will then add the music to your video.

tutorial part 2

You can then play your video and adjust the sound volumes using the video and music tools circled in this image below

tutorial3

Making the video is fairly easy.  This is where you can be creative in making your own video.  There are many options in Window’s Movie maker using certain themes, adjusting the volume of the sounds.  You can arrange the order you want your images to appear as well as working with color schemes and opening and ending credits. When you are satisfied with your video you will then save your video and upload your video to YouTube.  If you are having trouble uploading your video to YouTube from Window’s Movie Maker this tutorial on YouTube shows you how to convert your video into the right format that YouTube accepts.

I hope this tutorial helps you in working on this assignment Recycle the Media.  If there is something that is unclear written in this post please feel free to comment below and I will clarify what I mean.  Good luck on this assignment!
