Significant Objects

“Significant Objects, a literary and anthropological experiment devised by Rob Walker and Joshua Glenn, demonstrated that the effect of narrative on any given object’s subjective value can be measured objectively.”

The project involved finding low cost objects at garage sales and thrift stores and creating stories about them that might enhance their value, as proven in auctions on eBay.

See if you can replicate a web page of the same kind that includes both the artifact, a story, and make it look like some kind of auction site.

Profiles of ds106 Super Heroes

Select a profile of a Marvel comic character and rewrite the web page to build a super hero character our of someone involved in ds106. The easiest way to do this is to save the source of the web page as an html file, and either use the BASE HREF tag in the header for the root of the URL or to update the image links to be full URLs.

Then rewrite the content to more match the persona you are satirizing.

Google Translate Fail

_cokwr: Find something in a foreign language and use Google Translate and laugh about how awful it is. Its pretty easy to do if you use Google Chrome. Just go to a site in another language and select the translate to English button when it pops up (options - under the hood - check the box that says to offer translations). I think you can also use the main google.com to translate pages as well. If its a language you know, give an explanation of what it should be and list possible reasons it got messed up. , _cpzh4: On/In the Web, _cre1l: http://rigsbytuj.blogspot.com/2011/11/google-translate-fail.html, _chk2m: Steven Q.
