All the Cousins Together Again

I guess I’m on a Gimp kick. For this assignment I did the Complete Family assignment. My cousins and I have not been all together in YEARS so I decided to make us one big happy family again. I cut everyone out of their respective photos and merged them all together into one layer. This was one long, intensive process. I was happy I only have 7 cousins, otherwise this would have driven me nuts to have to do more! I was a little disapointed at the quality seeing as it took me so long to do. I guess I did not get close enough with the path tool to each person. I didn’t even realize it until they were on top of each other and the colored background. That’s something I will have to work on.

How to draw a horse!

This is my assignment and tutorial (using GIMP) for the 2 star Visual Assignment, Draw it. I hope you find it helpful!

DRAW IT BEFORE

I used GIMP to transform a photo of my horses into a sketch!

First, open gimp and drag the photo you wish to use into the GIMP screen. Now click “duplicate layer” under the “Layer” tab.

Next go to the “colors” tab and choose “desaturate.” (When the dialogue box pops up choose “lightness” and click “ok”) All color should now be gone!

Like this:

Now click on the “filters” tab ? “edge-detect” ? “edge”

Once you do this, a window will pop up:

You can play around with the Algorithms if you’d like. I chose Prewitt Compass. (They are all about the same) When you choose the algorithm you want click “ok”

Now your screen should look something like this:

Looks creepy I know! But we aren’t done quite yet!

Next, you need to click on the “colors” tab and then “invert”

And you get:

Yay! Much better!

Now if you want to take it a step further and add a little bit of color:

Go to the “Layers-brushes” window…

Now make sure the layer you manipulated is selected and lower the opacity from 100% (I lowered mine to about 70%)

And now we have our final product!

DRAW IT AFTER

I hope these directions help, Please let me know!

Visual Assignment: Common Everyday Object

Common Everyday Object

Take a picture of a common ever day object and manipulate the colors.

This is a 2 star assignment.

Before:

Untitled

After:

Visual Assignment: Common everyday photo.

For this picture I included my desk lamp and planner as well at some mini drawers that I keep pens and highlighters and other things in.  I feel like having more than one object in this picture makes editing the after image more interesting. After taking a picture on my iPhone I then used this free app called Color Photo Edit (it’s a free app in the app store).  Afterwards I then scrolled through the different color schemes and ended up with one called Inverse.  I chose this color scheme out of all the different ones to choose from because to me it’s a light and dark kind of change.

Visual Assignment: When Unicorns Explode

When Unicorns Explode

Make a photo containing as MUCH color as HUMANLY possible. This should be a photo that in some way captures or embodies joy to you.

This is a 1 star assignment.

For this assignment I took a picture of my quilt on my bed.  I took this picture because I like the quilt on my bed because it has a lot of color and pattern in it.  For me I like when things are colorful.  I think life is boring with out color.  I really liked this assignment.  I think color helps to define the picture more.  I guess this embodies joy to me because I always enjoy going to bed at night.

Visual Assignment: An Album Cover

An Album Cover.

So here’s something fun for everyone to do, should be quick and easy, but try to make it pretty.

First, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The title of the article is now the name of your band.

Next, go here: http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 Go to the bottom of the page.

The last four to five words of the last quote are the title of your first album Lastly, go here: http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days Select the 3rd image. It is the picture for your album cover. Manipulate the picture, resize it, add some other color, whatever. Do the same with the band name and album title, put them over top. However you wanna do it. Make it look cool.

This is a 2 star assignment.

The random Wikipedia page I got was Hunan Cuisine, so that’s what my band is called.  My album cover is called Alone in the World.  It is from a quote from Henry David Thoreau. The photo I got was called Angry Bunny in the Dark?!  This was posted by Thomas (music note next to name).

What I first did was download the photo.  It then opened in Windows Live Photo Gallery (my default place for pictures on my computer).  I then played with the coloring of the image. The next thing I did was open the drawing in paint to add text to it.  I like the few color thing in this because having few colors can represent loneliness.  Which seems to be the theme in this abum.  I really enjoyed this assignment because it I like how with these 2 random words and 1 random picture can create a story itself.

Pretzel Time

Splash the Color

I really enjoyed this assignment, I’m still getting accustomed to GIMP and how to bend it to my will but I didn’t curse too much in the process. This is a shot of me eating a pretzel which I’m sure was outrageously priced out at Disneyland when I went to visit my Aunt in San Diego with now fiancee. It was well worth the cost in memories and fun.

Visual Assignment #6 – 1 Star

Okay, this is my last Visual Assignment.  For this one, I decided to change the color of the sky on a picture that I took at the beach.  Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two photos.

As much as I like the first one, which is completely un-changed in terms of editing, I really liked changing the yellow to a more blue hue.  It makes it feel like there is a flash going off or something is happening other than a sunset.  I, once again, used Photoshop Express Editor to change the picture and make the blue more accented.  I hope that you like the changes that I made to my photos!

Troll Quote, Troll Quote, Off To Make A Troll Quote!

As a fan of Babylon 5, when I read the description of Troll Quotes, my thoughts immediately went to Londo Mollari, the sarcastic, sharp-tongued Centauri ambassador. Any script from the show could be mined for a dozen or so entertaining and insulting quotes from him, though the line “What do you want, you moon-faced assassin of joy?” from the episode “Born to the Purple” has always been one of my favorites.

I decided to use this quote, and then was faced with who to attribute it to. Col. Saul Tigh from Battlestar Galactica seemed like a good choice. He too has many sarcastic one-liners. He might have said this to Starbuck while hungover. And I also thought of Quark from Deep Space 9. I seem to remember him having a lot of amusing dialogue (though admittedly I haven’t watched Deep Space 9, and could be confusing Armin Shimerman’s portrayals of Quark and Principal Snyder). Plus Quark makes for an interesting visual.

Combining the image and quote in Photoshop took about 2 minutes, though my first attempt looked too similar to the example used in the assignment:

So I decided to make a second attempt with a more challenging image:

I tried to set it up so that the background to the text looked like Quark’s reflection on a counter (perhaps the bar at Quark’s?). I flipped the image vertically, set the transparency to 65%, and then created a mask and manually did a gradient with the brush and blur tools (you can still see some of the individual strokes; I’ve decided to pretend they are streaks on the counter). I then added the text with a drop-shadow that matched the color of his shirt (three cheers for the eye-dropper color selector!). I’m still not completely happy with how it turned out, but I think I would need to spend a lot of time digging for the right image to get it exactly how I want. And that would cut down on my precious time trolling B5, BSG, and DS9 fans on the interwebs.

Visual Assignment #5 – 2 Stars

Okay, Photoshop Express Editor definitely gets an A+ from me.  My 5th Visual Assignment was to take a picture of a normal everyday object and alter the color.  What better thing to take a picture of and change the color than a pumpkin!  Here is a side-by-side comparison of the photo that I changed the colors on.  Not only did it change the pumpkin to green, it also changed the fall tablecloth leaves green as well!

I hope that you guys like my picture and I definitely hope that you check out Photoshop Express Editor for all of the Visual Assignments that have to do with manipulating pictures.  It’s definitely the best website out there so far that I’ve found.

Visual Assignment #4 – 2 Stars

For my 4th Visual Assignment, I’m doing the Draw It assignment.  We are to take a photo and make it look like a sketch or drawing.  I used Photoshop Express Editor to make the photo look like a ‘sketch’.  I absolutely love this website, as I mentioned in my last edited photo, because it makes it so easy to alter a photo 100% within just a few seconds.  I think I edited both photos within a timeframe of one minute.  Just because I like the photo so much, I put it up on Flickr.

We took this photo last week and I thought that it would be a good one to turn into a sketch.  Hopefully you all feel the same way!  Let me know what you guys think in any comments.
