What Metallica Means to Me

This is a little recording about my feelings towards Metallica’s song, Master of Puppets. It’s a pretty well-known song, and just something that’s fun to play loud honestly. It makes my adrenaline start pumping and it generally makes me think of doing something active at a fast pace. I typically listen to this song and some others before sports competitions as they give me a fun little boost to get me in the mood to compete.

Other than just the mental preparedness this song gives me, it also inspires a little bit of resilience and resistance in me. Talking about someone being the master of puppets is talking about the puppeteer being in full control, and with our government and their manipulation and monitoring, I sometimes feel like many people in the public spotlight are just puppets and aren’t very free thinking, which is unfortunate. The “puppeteer” also comes in many shapes, money, greed, blackmail, or other motivating and controlling interests. It’s unfortunate that there is so much control in our world in some ways, in other ways it’s a good thing. Most everything in moderation can be a good thing, the tough line to draw is where does the moderation start and end.

Title: Movie Scenes That Changed Our Lives

Description: For this assignment I was asked to select scenes from 3-5 movies. These scenes were supposed to represent scenes that changed mu life or made some sort of dramatic, traumatic, lasting, or emotional impact on me. After selecting the scenes, I was asked to create a video that shows the scenes and includes audio/video of me describing what it is about the scene that made a significant impact on me.

Inspiration: When I first read the description of this assignment I was immediately drawn to it. I felt that it would not only be interesting to do, but that it would remind me of those critical times in my life where a movie has really impacted me in a way that I never expected it to. The top five movies that I picked where A Time to Kill, The Pursuit of Happiness, and The Help. The Pursuit of Happiness made me think of my mom and how much she has sacrificed for me. It also inspires me to go out there and achieve my goals and dreams. A Time to Kill and The Help are constant reminder to me of how my ancestors have been treated in America. They also remind me everyday to push myself because I am part of a generation that has a choice now.

Process: First, I went on Youtube and a scene from each movie that captured the emotions that I wanted to convey in my video project. I then downloaded the videos to my computer using a program that I downloaded offline. Here is a link to the program:

I then put the videos into Windows Movie Maker. I added a title scene, a caption scene before each movie clip, and then a credit block at the end. For each movie scene I added the page curl animation to introduce the movie scene.

Previous Example: Here are the links of two previous examples of this assignment. Out of the two examples I felt that the first one definitely got the message of this assignment across more. The second assignment, even though it told a story about that person’s childhood, did not come across as something that was life changing. It was more about the reminiscing on movies that they watched during their childhood. The first example, not only involves more emotions, but I was able to relate to it way more than the second one.

My story is simple. A good girl, lost in a bad world. Not knowing whom to turn to and when. Wondering why no one understands that not all my days are good days. Even though I pretend as if they are.

When I saw this assignment, I thought about it for a long time. I had seen several of these kind of videos on Youtube and they were all serious. Some were very depressing and some people talked about how they wanted to kill themselves. Now, mine is not that deep, but I do express somethings.

I hope this assignment let you all see another side of me. That sometimes I am outgoing, but sometimes I go through things and I feel alone. I’ve never been “depressed” but stress has come into my life. I hope this video inspires someone that is going through; that life is hard, but you will survive. Find your outlet and be yourself.

There are many people that I deeply admire and who inspire me. But the woman who inspires me the most, is Emmeline Pankhurst. She was a woman’s suffrage activist who lived from 1858-1928. Her life was filled with endless acts of selflessness towards women. She founded the Women’s Franchise League which was responsible for securing married women to have to right to vote in Britain and the Married Women Property Acts.

I cannot imagine what it must have been like to be Emmeline. To live in a world where women were not human enough to have the right to vote, or even own property. She fought to change the status quo and it could not have been easy for her. Most of her work was done in England, but she helped start the domino effect of the fight against women’s suffrage. Emmeline did not have easy goals that she set for herself, but she worked hard to accomplish them. She is such an inspiration to me to continue to work for my goals! So many strong women have fought so extremely hard for me, I have no excuse to not to work hard as well. Maybe I am not a public figure, or run a nonprofit and maybe I am not a politician but I can still influence and make a difference wherever I am in life.

I always say that water is my spirit animal. Yes, I know that doesn’t make sense, but that’s how I feel. Water feels like a kindred spirit to me. It refuels me, refreshes me, uplifts me, inspires me, and so much more. And, I think I embody many features of water. Water is necessary for life. It cuts through strong rock just by persistence. Also, it can have devastating effects on surrounding areas if nature gets “angry.” Alternatively, it can have a calming affect on people. This is why I always take pictures of water when I’m out exploring.

Water is also alien. It doesn’t react the way one would expect it to. One of my favorite things is to watch YouTube videos about water. Take this one for example:

At night, I listen to “white noise” type of sounds such as light traffic or ocean waves so that I can sleep. I don’t care much for the extra sounds that happen near the water like the birds, the loud people, or loose animals. There is nothing more relaxing than to take a walk near the ocean, feel my feet in the sand, and listen to the waves crash against the shore.

Diana Francis Spencer, Princess of Wales has always interested me as a historical figure. She is probably one of the most beloved members of the Royal Family, even after her death in 1997. She was the first person to make the Royal Family personable and accessible. Even though she was from a noble family, she was only a lady, which is a lower rank within the nobility. This lower rank meant she was closer to the “common-folk” which really made her a princess of the people. She also had the “fairytale” wedding: Big poufy dress, gorgeous crown, long train, horse-drawn carriages, fairytale kiss atop a balcony, and of course she married a prince.

Princess Diana was beloved by all who met her! She was known
for being shy, but she did not shy away from helping people. She always held
herself with such grace and was always kind to other people. When she became
Princess of Wales, she became the patroness of many different charity organizations
and continued to help them even after her divorce from Prince Charles.

The biggest thing I admire about Princess Diana is how much she cared about people. She was fully committed to her charity work and wanted to help people all over the world. Her main charities focused on helping children and people with diseases such as AIDS and leprosy. She inspires people all over the world and including me to be kind and help out your fellow man.

I enjoyed getting to talk about Princess Diana in this assignment. I love the Royal Family and it was cool getting to use that knowledge in an assignment.

My mom immigrated to this country in the late 1980’s. My mom tells me stories of the difficult time she had when they first came to U.S. My mom worked so she could provide for her family, her work sometimes left her tired not leaving enough time to spend with her children. My mom made many sacrifices during that time, she would often walk miles just to get the grocery because transportation was limited back in the days. My mom mentions that they were both advantages and disadvantages of living in the 80’s. One advantage is being able to communicate with people face to face. A disadvantage for her was to be away from her family and friends. My mom says things were definitely different in the 80’s but her happy place would be her children.

This writing assignment I chose is called Who Inspires You where you have to choose someone who you admire or who inspires you and write about them and why you admire them or why they inspire you. I chose to write about Steve Jobs because he is a very inspirational person to me. Also, I wanted to relate this to the 80s theme, and Steve Jobs was strong influencer on society in the 80s.

Steve Jobs, as almost everyone knows, was the chairman, CEO, and co-founder of Apple Inc., and that is one of the main reasons why he is such an inspiration to me because I am a huge fan of Apple products. He developed technology in a way to try and make the everyday person’s life simpler. I admire him for his forward looking attitude and adaptability to change. I find these two things to be very important because the world is constantly changing and growing, and we as humans should do the same as well. These have inspired me to never stop growing or learning. Steve Jobs wasn’t concerned about being rich or wealthy because what mattered to him was doing something wonderful in the world. This speaks volumes to me, and is something I will always strive for. One example of this is his notion of time, and how it is the most precious resource we have. He created the technology he did and advanced it to make people’s time more valuable, to do something wonderful in the world. His concern wasn’t himself, but the whole world. That to me is commendable and selfless, and that is why he is such a huge inspiration to me. He took his creativity, ideas, and intelligence, and geared it towards making other people’s lives better and more enjoyable. He was able to do something that he was passion about in his life and make the world a better place at the same time. This was his intention when he founded Apple Inc., and still to this day, I believe that Apple Inc. continues to carry on that motto. This is why I would love to work for Apple Inc. one day. If this isn’t inspiration, then I don’t know what is. Lastly, below is an image of a very inspirational quote from Steve Jobs.

Overall, this assignment was a great way for me to reflect on someone who is big inspiration to me, and I enjoyed it.

Really Super Week 3

This week we really dived deeper into the superhero theme. I have never been a fan of superhero things but I always go into everything with an open mind. This week, I would say that I am actually more interested in the theme than I ever thought I would be.

I never watch superhero stories so I was not looking forward to this assignment which is why I saved it for last. I chose Supergirl and I actually enjoyed it. It had a great mix of her own life drama and her superhero life. I am really looking forward to finding time to continue watching the rest of the season. It was hard to compare it with other superhero stories since I have not paid attention to any superhero things until this semester. Seeing commercials for movies still have given me a good perspective on the patterns, themes, and commonalities of superhero stories. My superhero story post is below:

Assignment Banks:

One of the assignment banks that we had to do was Day in the Life of a Superhero.

I chose to do this one because it gave me a better outline to come up with a story. I am not a great writer or someone that has the best imagination so I needed some sort of outline for a story. I luckily got generated The Ultra Tiger, which is great for me because I do love cats and I could relate to this superhero. It was very hard to come up with a story about a day in his life. I eventually got an idea and the more I wrote the more ideas I kept coming up with. I am not 100% happy with my story but it was all I had in my head. If I were to do it again I would add more dialect between the Tiger and the Mugger or citizens in distress. My day in the life of the Ultra Tiger is below:

The second assignment bank I chose was: Dear Future Husband – 3.5 Stars

I enjoyed writing the letter to my future husband. It made it very easy for me to do because I just thought of my boyfriend that I have spent my life with these past 4 years. He is everything I have ever wanted and more. I just wrote this letter as if I was standing at the altar telling him my vows. I am not a big fan of writing but this was something I really enjoyed to do.

The third assignment bank I did was: Who Inspires you – 3 Stars

We had to write about someone that inspires you. With no questions asked the fist person that popped into my head was my grandma. She has always been there for me since I was born. I appreciate how great of a person she is and my goal in life is to be just like her. Every time I am asked this question, I have always my grandma. Don’t get me wrong, my mother is also my inspiration, but the inspiration all starts with her mother. My mom is the way she is because of my grandma. We also had to include the superhero theme into our assignment this week so I chose this one to do it with. My grandmother is my superhero that saves me from all the wrongs in life. She has shaped me into the person I am today and that definitely takes a strong super woman to do that. My inspiration post about her is below:

The final assignment bank I chose was: Emotional Lyrics – 3 Stars

This was a really fun assignment to do. I had to pick an emotion and tweet 3 songs that related to that emotion. I decided to pick love. Every time I hear a song that reminds me of love I send the link to my boyfriend. There are so many songs that I hear that remind me of how great of a boyfriend he is. Instead of me just picking 3 songs, I decided to let him join in. I picked a song sang by a woman that the lyrics really make me think of my love for my boyfriend. Next, he picked a song by a guy that reminded him of how much he loves me. Finally, together we picked a duet between a man and a woman that really reminded us the most of each other. This was a really neat assignment because I had the opportunity to go through old songs that I had actually forgotten about in hopes of finding the perfect song. It was actually harder than I thought it would be because there are so many songs out there that I can relate my love to the lyrics but I only could pick 3. After an hour of going over our favorite songs, we finally picked the one. The assignment said to post the videos on twitter and then add to a blog. Below is my post containing the tweets and songs:

Superhero Dossier:

I was nervous about having to think of a superhero and their background. I thought that I had wanted to be some sort of cat woman, but then I thought how there is already one and I want to be something unique. I wanted to pick something that was similar to me but would also help the world. After many ideas rolling through my head, I decided to be Merciful Mise en Place. In high school I thought I wanted to be a chef. I took 2 years of culinary arts classes and realized that it was not the career for me, but I did enjoy it as a hobby. I decided to do a super chef because of this. I wanted her to help distressed people that did not know how to cook, she would be saving them from a cooking disaster in other words. I wanted to make sure that her costume was kitchen safe so I imagine her having a chef coat, long pants, close toe shoes, and her hair up. Her worst enemy is Betty Croc-ker since she sells pre-made powdered products that are a huge disgrace to chefs. I am thinking that Merciful’s sayings when she fights the Croc-ker will be, before they fight -“Im gonna serve you up!” and when she wins the fight- “Would like fries with that?” and when she walks away -“That was easy as pie!” I am really excited to see what else I will do with this character this semester. Daily Creates:

For this daily create we had to take an image and juxtapose it with old vs. new. I used the website provided to us to get my background ‘old’ part. I chose this one where there are two groups of different people having a discussion over a table. It looked like a map, but in my head I was thinking it would be funny to do a hover board since the people all look confused and in awe. I imagine they are in war and trying to resolve a conflict but this mysterious object appeared out in the field so they brought it in to discuss what it was. For this assignment I took a hover board image and made the background transparent using powerpoint. I then pasted the board onto the old background to get this image. I saw a lot of other daily creates that were gifs that I thought were very cool! I would like to know how those were done.

The second daily create was to show us with our superpower. I wish I was stronger than I am so if I was a superhero I would definitely want to have super strength. When I thought of that I immediately remembered this photo of me a few years ago. I knew having my hands up like that and flat would look perfect with some sort of heavy object above. I found a car with a plain background and removed the background on powerpoint, and pasted it on top of my image. I changed the image to be black and white so that the not so great photoshop would be less obvious.

The third daily create I did was the one where we were to post out superhero stance. By the time I saw this daily create I had already relaxed at home in my pajamas. I did not feel like taking a picture of myself in the present so I found one of me a couple years ago posing sort of like a superhero. I actually found this in a school video project so I just took a screenshot and started to edit. I decided to make myself look more superhero-like. I found a red cape and mask with transparent backgrounds. I pasted them to my image. The cape covered my arm in a weird way so I tried my best to crop it into pieces to make it look like it was coming off my back. The editing was not the best so I manipulated the color of the image to make the red in the cape and my shirt blend together a little bit better. It isn’t the best, but if you squint your eyes and tilt the screen it looks pretty great. This pose doesn’t look too strong, it looks more like I am for crime on the streets.
