Movies by Numbers

  • Movies by Numbers, In this assignment we had to use a number and then things that are relevant to that number, and here is the link. Some students did the number 1 and added music and pictures that are relevant to that number.
  • I chose this assignment because I think it is cool how certain numbers symbolized certain things. The number 7 is one of my favorite numbers and so this is why I chose it. I have experience with the number 7 with buying a lottery ticket and winning some money.
  • The story behind the number 7 is that I used different clips that represent the number 7 for example the 7 wonders of the world, 7 deadly sins, 007, triple 7 etc. It was fun to find different pictures that represent the number.
  • I used movie maker to make my video. I got all my clips from google images. I put the clips together in movie maker and added the instrumental of 007  as the background music.
  • I showed some friends and it was amazing how somethings were brought to their attention of how the number 7 represents certain things.

Video Assignment #3

The lip synch! woot!

This was the most fun to do. I initially wanted to do it to Carole King’s Way Over Yonder. However, that was WAY too depressing for ds106 (and I already associate that song with funerals..bad). Instead, I dug into what songs are really fun to sing. BETSY Q!!!! Yes, that crazy lady that visited my elementary school every year with the piano and the crazy songs and the berets and yeah, you get the point. And classically, the one I most remember is the I Say No Rap about anti-drugs.

I love to rap. A lot. So I turned on my webcam. I opened iTunes and downloaded the rap. I played it from my library after turning the webcam on. Once I was done lip synching, I just saved the video. It automatically went onto my videos on my hard-drive.  I put it on youtube. This is YouTube gold. Although not Nicole337 material, because I realized that she ACTUALLY sings her songs herself.

PROBLEMS: My daggone body movements were a lot harder to do. I was not sure if I should include hand motions or not, so I stayed pretty simple. I also had a hard time remembering the number of ‘nos’ in the rap. But I LOVE BETSY Q and have since I was five years old. This rap is gold. I love it. I have probably sung that song over 1000 times because it is so fun!

I hope you guys like it. Here it is:

Also, it is VERY embarrassing. Like I felt like I was getting in touch with my middle school self and crossing that off the bucket list.

Movies By Numbers ***

I watched Andrew‘s Movies by Numbers (the number 2). I liked the music from Mad Man, I was really excited to hear it.  It felt like a slow video to watch.. Although, I do really want to commend him on finding a variety of pictures with the number 2 in them. I have seen other videos were there wasn’t a lot of boring. I was really impressed by the change in music. It was beautifully overlapped and edited. I wonder if that was done in an audio program or in the video program. Toward the end, I was confused on where the number two was in the picture. However, I trust there is two there somewhere and I’m just missing it.

I watched ” 9 of all Glory“.  I found the video a little creepy and eerie, has a lot to do with the music and the images. The effects of the image in particular had an eerie effect. I know she used VideoPad Video Editor and I wonder if it is more sophisticated than my Window Movie Maker, because I have yet to discover how to edit effects like that. I really like how she started the video off with a math equation that added up to 9. That was clever. I, also, was impressed that she used other version on the number 9, such as 99.

I had look at this assignment, and thought.. mmm I could do this. It looks relatively low editing of video. I thought to myself what number…there is no limit to the numbers in the world. I remember, then , growing-up my father always said he was a mathematician. However, being the naive little girl I was, I thought he meant a math-a-magician. I always had just assumed that he did magic with numbers. This story reminded me of School House Rock, in particular – “Three is a Magic Number“. I listen to the video and was inspired to collect some photographs. Then, I was thinking well this is lame. So I thought what is a cooler “3″ song, and The Hangover came into my head. “ Three Best Friends” song would be perfect for some of the addition photographs I have of groups of three. Thus, the concept was born.

The story here is that many things in life comes in “3″: two is a couple but three is a family; three wheels makes a tricycle; laundry detergent, soften, and dryer sheet makes the most convenient laundry day, etc. It a story of the wonders of “3″. I gets the audience thinking about the world around them, putting numbers to the world around them.

In order to do this I put all the pictures in Windows Movie Maker. I added by audacity edited music clips to the pictures. This time I went a big further to adjust the amount of time spent on each picture so some of the picture were timed to the lyrics. Once that was done, I did some fade out/in of the music. Saving and uploading, and the process was complete. Don’t get me wrong… it was time consuming, but the bulk of my time was spent on conceptualizing the video.

Picture are below: 3-in-1 Purex,3M, 3 Crosses on the Hill, Toy Story 3 ,Faith Hope Love, Girl Scout Sign, Tricycle, Triangle Sunset, 3 mph, Life has changed, 3rd street,  3 little pigs, triplets, 3 is a magic number.

This is a 3 star assignment

When I came across this assignment in the video assignment repository I immediately thought of the song. One by Three Dog Night.  This song made my number choice easy, as I am going to pick number one.  For this assignment I have found many pictures with the number one and it looking lonely.  There are also going to be pictures of just the number one, and the number one written out.

2 Reviews of Previously done work:

1. Number 9 by Darren Kuropatwa:  This is the once that is shown as the example.  I really like the number 9 personally.  When I used to play soccer for fun in elementary school I always wanted to have the shirt with 9 on the back.  I really liked how this video included everything that related to number 9.  I also really liked how at the end of the video there were facts about the number 9.  I also love how in the back ground is someone saying Number 9, number 9.  This video was really well done.

2. Number 1: I decided to review the number that I plan on working with as well.  Though I am not a big fan of the kind of music played in the background the song was relevant to the number 1. I really like how this person found different ways to create the number 1.  Though I have to say that after watching the entire video I think this person could have kept more pictures of the number 1 or items that represent the number 1.  I was starting at a blank video screen at 1 minute and 25 seconds.  The whole video time was 3 minutes and 50 seconds. Over half of the video was a black screen.

The links below are for all the images in this video in order:  I believe that the descriptions that I gave the pictures in order tell a story itself, about different uses of the numebr one.  One is used in a lot of different situations and one stands alone by itself.  These are all images of just one thing.  They all stand alone.

1. Number 2  2. One in Star  3. One Star  4. No  5. One dog  6. Yes   7. One Direction 8. OneRepublic  9. One Apple  10. One Sad Face 11. One Broken Heart 12. One Billiard Ball  13. One Bowling Pin 14. One Golf Ball 15. One Stuffed Animal 16. Number one in Red 17. One Pencil  18. One Sock 19. One Teardrop 20. Number one represented by hand   21. Green Written out One 22.  Beatles 1 Album  23. One with Blue O  24. One Tree Hill  25. One By Image

The images I chose to be in this video all represent 1 and how it can be lonely  as well as the different uses of the number one in band names or how its represented by people and things.  You’re probably wondering why there is the number 2, and the words yes and no in this video.  I’ll tell you why.  They represent the lyrics in the song.  Watch the video and you will see.  While making this video I gathered many images from google images (as you can see linked above) and uploaded them into Windows movie maker.  I then added the song into this by clicking the add music option in window’s movie maker.  After that I then ordered the images in a way so they fit the song.  This time while using window’s movie maker I added text to give my video a title and at the end I added credits by using the credits option in window’s movie maker.  I’m really happy with how this video came out.  I think this is some of my better video work.  I have definitely been feeling more comfortable using Window’s movie maker.

Below is my embedded YouTube video, again any feedback is appreciated.  :)

For this assignment I chose the letter 1 because it just shows how we as humans always need that 1 person in our life we could trust

movies by numbers assignment

i did this video by taking pictures of numbers off ps3 games i.e. modern warfare 3, mass effect 2. i used an app of the app store called splice. i placed all the pics into the video maker and used the instrumental theme “is capua burning” from the spartacus vengeance soundtrack, clipped it down to 18 seconds added it to the video and exported it

What did you learn?

This week, I learned that design is complicated. There are so many elements that go into creating a good design that I wasn’t aware of until this week. During this whole week, I probably spent about 10 hours just reviewing information focused on design. And that would have been more if all of the provided links had worked! Really, it was a little overwhelming. My main takeaways from this week are about keeping things simple. From typography, to colors, to other visual elements, it is important to streamline my choices. This doesn’t mean shirking on quality or cost. This is a minimalistic approach. Less is often more.

What was harder than you thought it would be?

By far, the hardest thing for me is finding free programs which allow me to make the necessary edits to complete these assignments. Most of the free programs have limited uses of various elements before asking you to pay money. In the past, I used Photoshop CS5 professionally. Since then, Photoshop has changed a lot and it’s even more expensive. I can’t spend so much money on a program that my computer barely has the capability to run. I’m trying to avoid programs like Gimp. In sticking with a minimalistic approach, I also want to keep my apps simplified. I want maximum impact for minimum cost and processing power. I really thought there would be more free programs out there. I’m slowly upgrading my design arsenal, but it is taking a lot or research and time.

What was easier?

It is becoming much easier to manage my time. I was able to get some blog posts out earlier this week, which makes more sense than having five posts on the assignment due date. While no one is publicly viewing this blog, if they were, they would be overwhelmed with the number of posts that I put out on Sundays. I feel better about my progress this week. Perhaps in the next week, I’ll be able to space my assignments out over each day of the week. That is probably the idea situation.

What drove you crazy? Why?

Broken links drove me a little crazy this week. Last week, there were one or two. This week, there were quite a few. Other links could not be accessed by clicking on them. Instead, I had to copy the link address, open up a browser tab, and then past the address in that new tab. It isn’t a ton of work, but it definitely makes things move slower when you have to do it for twenty or more links. I’m often working from car, listening to videos and audio while driving or at work, so it’s better for me to have a streamlined approach to accessing materials. At this rate though, the class will be over very soon. I suppose I can deal with it for a couple more weeks.

What did you enjoy? Why?

This week, I began to take a cumulative look at my progress digitally. While a lot of the assignments annoy me, such as the Daily Creates, I am still learning. The learning is minute, yes, but at least it is happening. I like feeling like I’m making progress. As a digital hoarder, I also enjoy gathering lists of free programs. I especially love being able to direct others to these free resources online. I’m all for freedom and access of information.

Big picture: I’m starting to prioritize digital content creation. These smaller projects help me realize that it’s not so difficult or time-consuming to create quick content. Additionally, I’m becoming more proficient with completing some of the larger projects in a timely fashion. I’m not sure yet how this will translate into my own life outside of school. I guess I’ll know more once this course ends.

Christmas in March?

So for this assignment, I kind of went a bit… well a lot off script. My issue was if I would’ve followed the strict 25 movie clip part, my video probably would’ve been like an hour long. So instead, I just grabbed 3 clips from my favorite Christmas movies (but don’t fret – I did leave out Elf, and that is my all time favorite one. Can literally say it word for word. I just couldn’t find any clips for it that I liked). But since I limited the number of clips, I was able to put a lot of focus on the sound, clipping, and my title/closing parts.

So, I started off by doing the usual 4K video downloader, and finding clips on YouTube that I liked. Once I uploading them into iMovie, I then went on the hunt for music. Now this was a struggle, I had a specific sound in mind that I wanted to use. After lots and lots and I mean LOTS of digging I found the perfect one. I think this sound goes really well the two movies that I put it with. I chose to not put it with the Polar Express, because I used that as sort of the introduction (there’s more of an excitement and uncertainty if that makes sense). During the Santa Claus clip, you’ll notice that the Jingle Bell Rock music cuts out when he says “Does this look like a little bit of weight to you?” and I fully did that on purpose. The guy I care give for is OBSESSED with Disney, and that saying in the Santa Claus is one of his favorites. It’s a really special clip for me, because now whenever I watch the movie I think about him. So making this video really brought me a lot of joy.

After cutting and moving clips around, I then worked on my title/closing credits portion. I decided to be ~different~ and put my title slide after the Polar Express clip. I did this, because well 1. when I had the title slide at the beginning, it cut into the Polar Express clip abruptly and I hated that there was no flow 2. Again the excitement and uncertainty. I think using the title part a little further in the video makes it feel more like a movie (I watched a movie the other day where the title was 30 minutes in the movie… honestly THAT was weird, but I think where mine is works). I wasn’t sure exactly how to format my credits. I know our resources said to give credits to basically everything, but I wasn’t sure what everything meant. Then when it got time to upload my video to YouTube… this is when things got tricky. Naturally I got copyrighted, had no clue what that meant for my video. Ended up reaching out to the professor while I waited for a response I started Googling some stuff (0/10 recommend doing that). That then led me to making a Vimeo. Once I got a response though, I was able to actually understand what the copyright thingy meant so I was okay to post it on YouTube. Which I’m glad because Vimeo completely destroyed the quality of my video for some reason.

Also since I didn’t fully uphold the requirements for the assignment (though we are able to do our own twist for things), I decided to create my own title part on Canva. I did a quick Google search for transparent images of my favorite Christmas movies, and just slapped them on there.

Overall this assignment was super fun to do. It really ties into our class theme, because though it may be March and we have many… many… MANY months until Christmas; thinking about Christmas brings me so much joy, and that joy helps me become more creative. Though I spent a lot of this time talking about the elements, the elements all tie back into the joy I had creating this. I had a vision for this assignment, and I’m really happy with the outcome!
