Phi, The Golden Ratio Movie

Just learning about the Golden Ratio was fascinating to me, from a sculpture who came to visit a few years back when I had a bed and breakfast at my home. He explained that it is very pleasing to the eye, that people feel comfortable, when they see a composition that is in proportion to the Golden Ratio. So I explored it further and have found out that there is mathematical science to this ratio and it also may, or may not, be real in art or nature. It’s up to you to decide what you think about that.

The Ratio is almost perfectly aligned with this cool spiral–in scientific terms called the Fibonacci Sequence. But in the main, does it really matter? I call it all Golden, and Bob Ross? He’d call it Joy and Happy Little Spirals…..

To create this movie, I’m following Video Assignment 445, called “Text + Diagram -> into a Movie”. The point to the assignment that text doesn’t tell the whole story, so make a movie that combines text and diagrams to get the “ah, ha” effect to help the viewer better understand the written text. My task was to find written text (I recorded me scrolling through the wiki on the Golden Ratio), then find the happy medium with added diagrams. I created diagrams in my title and then cut in Salvador Dali‘s famous painting that is a perfect “diagram”/explanation of the Golden Ratio in application with the dodecahedron in the background and his placement of objects in the painting. I further added a diagram of the Fibonacci sequence and then ended with the diagram of the sequence overlaid on a rose signifying that the sequence and the Golden Ratio are almost synonymous with each other, and beautiful in nature, all around us.

To create this movie, I shot the videos from my iPhone then converted them from MOV to MP4 using CloudConvert. I wrote the script and recorded it on my phone then converted that from WAV to MP3. In Open Shot, I created a Master Track and imported the file for the text then made cuts where I needed to insert the art. It seems easy but I had to time it with the narration which created difficulties for me because I’m not adept at creating transitions and sometimes the app created transitions when I didn’t want them. This took a lot of time and there are some obvious hiccups (literally) in the end product. Because of this, I decided to add background music to create a cleaner sound. I found the background music on freesound.org then had to convert the background music to MP3. I then took the file to audacity to lower the volume because I couldn’t figure out how to do that in Open Shot Video Editor. After that, I imported it to my project and I think it’s value-added because it gives the movie an overall cleaner sound and hides some of the sound imperfections from my video recordings. If I have more time, there is room for improvement but I need to first consult with someone who can help me with the nuances of editing. After all that, I exported the video to my hard drive, then sent it to Vimeo, so I could embed it here, in my blog! And there you have it–2:21 of Golden Ratio! You know what, I should have kept the movie run time to 1.618033988749….. ha ha ha ha ha ….

Remake That Genre

Many artists find joy in taking a song and adding their own musical twist to it. They give a reggae flair to pop songs. A Latin twist on classical music. A Rock and Roll surprise on rap. So on and so forth.

Sofia Karlberg is a Swedish singer and songwriter who became famous for her cover that she uploads on YouTube. The cover that stood out to me the most was rockstar by Post Malone. The original song, released in September 2017, is a mixture of two rap genres: trap and cloud rap. The song quickly reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for two Grammys at the 2019 awards show.

Sofia’s cover of the song takes it from a rap song with a heavy emphasis on the bass to an R&B style track with a heavy emphasis on the piano. Though the lyrics are the same, the tone of the song has changed completely. It goes from dark and gritty to elegant and angelic.

I personally prefer Post Malone’s original track because of the dark and gritty vibe and just how much I can vibe to it. It’s edgy but you can still chill while listening to it. However, I have never heard anyone make swear words sound so peaceful and innocent.

The Joy of Painting Foundation

I’ve always been one to seek opportunities to help others and make a difference where I can, while my family collectively often donates to charities in hopes of seeing some real change in our world. Because of this, when seeing this prompt I knew I had to pick it up and make something with it. I recently watched a YouTube video by a guy that goes by the name Ten Hundred that showed the process of him and some subscribers painting a huge mural on the side of a school using only leather paint, typically used on shoes and handbags. He did this so that he could land a sponsorship from a company that makes leather paint, requesting that the company sponsors the mural painting event rather than his channel. The company loved the idea, sent a lot of paint, and also sent a ton of pairs of shoes to set up a workshop for the underprivileged kids at said school to paint their own shoes. This was extremely heartwarming and something that I won’t forget. The video is embedded below. If you have the time to watch it (about 12 minutes or so), I highly recommend doing so.

Because this has been on my mind, as well as the fact that we’re actively covering design and art, I figured I would create an imaginary charity that helps bring art to underprivileged kids. In Ten Hundred’s video, he mentions that a lot of schools that lack funding have to cut art programs entirely. Though this charity is made up, I’m sure something like this could make a great impact on a lot of young people. Incorporating Bob Ross into the idea also just made total sense, so I decided to call the organization “The Joy of Painting Foundation.” It has a good ring to it, a good message, and reflects an artist that was so inspiring to countless everyday folks.

I had some fun making this, choosing a design that shows a lot of little, intricate details that bring it all together. The silhouette of Bob’s face in the middle works extremely well, in my opinion, as anyone who knows of Bob Ross would know that it’s supposed to represent him. I also felt that these colors worked together, representing a warm pallet for the piece. In terms of the number at the bottom, I translated the letters in “Yay Bob Ross” over to numbers by looking at my the keypad on my phone app. It’s a little Easter egg that adds a bit of playfulness to the ad if you notice it.

I will follow the tide

Normally, while I study or do homework, I play instrumental music in the background to help me focus. While I was shuffling between playlists today, I stumbled on an ocean sounds white noise video on YouTube. (Ok? And? … just keep reading. this will make more sense when you read my assignment) While I was in a zen mood opening up the DS106 assignment bank I decided to start with a writing assignment because I love to write.

I opened the Write a poem assignment which basically instructed me to read a poem about emotions and to write a poem about how we were feeling at the moment. This is the poem I wrote: in fact, I was so proud of it, I posted it on my Twitter:

Following the tide

I ran and I ran and I ran and I ran

And I ran some more.

Until my ankles got sore

Until my knees could do nothing but fold

Until my feet were blistered

Until my sole was surely torn

But I had to keep running, I had to hide

I had to do everything I can, I had to do everything to survive

It’s gonna swallow me with its mouth open wide

So i kept running and running away from the big scary tide.

It continued to taunt me with its deafening roar

It wanted so badly to swallow me whole

I ran and I ran away from the tide

I didn’t stand a chance

At least that’s what i thought

I ran and I hid, just trying to survive

I wish i had the courage to fight, I wish the lion in me had come alive

I should have fought back.

Why did I have to run? Why did I try to hide?

I should’ve seen the tide as an invitation to go for a ride

I would’ve been able to get to the other side.

The other side where magic exists and dreams come true

was at the tip of my fingers but I let it slip through.

In the next life, I know to chase, to hunt, to do anything but hide, in the next life I will follow the tide.

This entire week, well actually the past 2 weeks… no the past 3 weeks… I feel like I have been extremely overwhelmed with things to do. I had to get everything in order and pack after my trip to Ethiopia then I had to come back home, unpack my stuff from Ethiopia, then pack once again to come to campus. Not to mention the number of things I had to do to start my semester like ordering my textbooks, getting my supplies, getting my booster shot, my COVID test, reading through all of my syllabi. Then, I had to answer the emails that I missed while I was in Ethiopia and I organized my calendar and made my agenda. And even though we are only on the second week of classes, I feel like we are on the 5th, in terms of the amount of workload I have had the first two weeks.

In short, I felt like I was drowning in work. I felt like there was a tide chasing me and I was on the brink of drowning. As such, my poem was inspired by how overwhelmed I was as well as the ocean sounds I had playing in the background while I was working.

I feel like my poem reflects my optimistic values. I felt like I was being chased by a “tide” yet I end the poem by saying, “In the next life,  I know to chase, to hunt, to do anything but hide, in the next life I will follow the tide.”

This assignment, or shall I say the product of this assignment, my poem, goes hand in hand with our class’s theme of the Joy of Painting. While I didn’t grab a canvas and a brush to write my poem, I was able to use my words to paint a picture of how I was feeling. That is the “Joy of Painting”, the joy of art allows us to express ourselves in such a deep and meaningful way.

Gif it!

I used this gif-maker to help me make these gifs out of these images and videos.

Txt-Gif, 2 stars

I no longer have the original four photos used in this gif, but any images can work for a tutorial. To upload multiple images for a gif, you’ll have a select all of them all of them at once. You may need to resize the images to fit them all together so that they may fit together more smoothly. I personally did not shift any of the automatic delay that the website provided. I then pressed the make a gif button.

The story behind this gif is actually pretty funny. Sometimes whenever I answer a question, I either confidently say yes or no, then say the other one, then say maybe, then I don’t know. I mostly made this as a meme between me and my friends because some of my friends started doing this too. Usually, only one of us did it when we did not want to openly admit an answer to a question or we didn’t know how to answer. That’s pretty much it.

Gif your sassy animal, 3 stars
The original video I used.

There’s some similar sets as the previous one. Upload, same as the previous one. The only thing I did was cut the video. To cut it, you have to input the time that you want to start your gif at and the time is the same for the end time. For example, for video, if you want to cut off the last 5 seconds, to mimic my video, you’ll need to start at 0 and end at 15.622 (for mine). Instead of doing 15.622 for the left number, and 20 for the second one. I don’t understand why it is the way but it just is.

One day, a cat demanded attention, as any cat does. It demands the best of scratches. The moment that you stop, it’ll look up to you with those demanding eyes that could kill. You have to apologize and continue scratching or else you might up perishing via laser beams. Once you resume, the cat’s gazes lowers as they relax to the touch. The world is once again safe for now. Who knows what would’ve happened if you didn’t continue to scratch. The best case, just your death, worst case, the end of the world!

The ABC’s of Zuko!

When you hear the word “honor,” what person or character comes to mind? For me, it’s Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender, my childhood show. For some reason, I’ve been going down memory lane a lot lately. As I was looking for another video assignment to do, I went along with Character Description (originally 3 stars, personal effort at 5 stars). However, I wanted to add my own little twist to it.

Have you watched “Learn the Alphabet with _______” videos? That’s where I got the idea to modify this character description assignment. Since Zuko has a lot of iconic lines, I thought that I would use each letter in the alphabet to present as many Zuko lines as possible. In this way, I can present Zako’s character from a unique and unconventional perspective. That said, it turned out to be more tedious than I expected.

My first challenge was finding quotes for each letter, and I eventually had to get a little creative (especially for the letters “v” and “x”). I first searched Zuko videos and went through dozens to find the specific quote I wanted or to listen for anything I could play around with. Some quotes I wanted to use I could not find videos. Even though I have the full DVD set, I did not want to download them onto my laptop because of the lack of storage in my laptop. Of course, I plan on binge watching the show now that I went through all this effort of browsing through videos. But that’s besides the point.

I downloaded a number of videos and trimmed them to get the exact words and phrases I needed, and put them all together. To add on to the silliness of the video, I made the automated speech voice say things like “A is for… B is for…” At the end, I added one of those childhood trap remixes.

Looking at this video again, it’s one of those things you create where you say jokingly, “Wow I hate myself.” Honestly, this is such a gag video, it’s garbage, but I had so much fun with it.

A Walk Through a Different World

Howdy! This is Sterling, back with another week of content. This assignment began as one and kind of turned into another. My original intent was to do a modified form of “Exercise And Socialize” by Jeremy Hillberry, which has the following description: “Neighborhood walks used to be a good form of exercise and a good way to meet your neighbors. Nowadays, exercise is at the gym and socializing is online. Record a video of yourself taking a neighborhood walk and play a song in the backgorund of the video that your neighbors would enjoy. Get out there, exercise and socialize!” It is rated 2.5 stars.

I’m pretty camera shy as you will find out from the video, though I needed to get out of the house for a bit and figured I would record it. This lead to me doing a bit of narration, which made it morph a bit into “VLOG ONE DAY” by Eric, rated 3 stars. “For one day, attempt to vlog your day! What did you today? What was your favorit part about today? Who did you encounter? Let’s hear all about it!” Of course, this is quite abridged since it only centers on one walk. It also deviates from the ‘socialize’ part of the first assignment because, well, I’m practicing social distancing. And I don’t know my neighbors well enough to play music for them.

In brainstorming this assignment, I had some clear, cinematic ideas as you can tell by the clips of me getting ready to leave and opening doors. It took a lot of revisions because half of my in-house clips I had recorded in portrait mode rather than landscape. Eventually, though, I made it out the door and I found myself stumped. Vloggers don’t seem to have it as easy as I thought. I consider myself a pretty decent conversationalist, and I knew I had a lot to talk about regarding COVID-19 and my feelings on social distancing. However, as soon as I pressed the record button, I was lost for words. I was suddenly hyper-aware of the people around me even though they were several feet away.

I didn’t want to make it obvious I was recording, so I recorded my feet as I walked. I got to greet a neighbor as well. I had to delete and speed up a lot of clips of my shoes since I imagine they get quite boring after a while. Finally, I arrived at the plaza that has the grocery store. It was alarming to see so many store closures: they weren’t like that last time I was out. Marty’s (a restaurant) is only doing takeout. The beer shop is leaving. The nail salon has clearly closed. It isn’t shown, but the Great Clips that is always open has closed its doors. That is why my family and I are doing our best to support local restaurants when we can. I hadn’t considered the impact on cosmetology businesses: those involve close contact and tools used multiple times.

Then, I went into Kroger. There was a surprising number of people there. I found that the best solution was to make it into a montage of sorts so as to avoid filming people directly. The toilet paper carnage was interesting to witness for myself. Practicing social distancing was difficult: it was quite packed, and as I remark in my video, I couldn’t maintain six feet between myself and others. I also saw quite a few people I knew, and it would’ve been impossible to talk more then 4 feet apart. The end of the video tends more towards this “vlog” format as I attempt to gauge in conversation (but keep looking in the distance anyways). Definitely turned into word vomit at the end, but I hope you could garner something from it.

While I enjoyed my massage, I worked on editing the video with my phone. My first step was to delete all of the clips I messed up on (I’ve locked the door more times than I have unlocked it). After that, I still had about 60 clips to combine, crop, and edit. The app I used was YouCut: a free phone app that one can use to edit videos. It features all of the basic editing functions one might need to put together a decent video. I separated my clips into 5 sections: getting ready, walking to the store, inside the store, heading home from the store, and final words. Each section was between 1 and 2 minutes.

As you can see, YouCut offers quite a few editing options. My first step was to trim the cut down to omit the parts where I am turning the camera on or off. Then, I muted the audio if it was a montage clip and sped it up (walking was 1.6x). In clips like the one where I say goodbye to my big gray cat, it was all in that one recording. Therefore, I had to split the walking part from the cat part in order to speed it up as I wished. Finally, I combined all of my parts and put a brightening filter over all of the footage. Overall, it took around two hours to edit. It probably would’ve been easier if I used something like Windows Movie Maker or Adobe Premiere, but I wanted to curl up and make a day out of this.

My next step was to edit the audio. I uploaded the video to my computer and then used a MP4 to MP3 converter to allow me to edit it in Audacity. I did a quick little clean-up where I took out some wind and unnecessary background noise. I did not edit my voice much since it was difficult to eliminate some of the background sounds. After that, I layered Plastic Love by Mariya Takeuchi on top (from a YouTube to MP3 converter) since it matched my video length exactly. I made sure to de-amplify the sound a little bit whenever I spoke. Then, I returned to YouCut and muted the sound from the original video, replacing it with my new mix. This part took another couple of hours since everything took so long to download

There you have it! Overall, the exercise portion of this assignment was certainly beneficial given our current circumstances. It allowed me to think of ways I should take care of myself physically, mentally, and socially. I feel like it would be a very fun assignment otherwise if someone is more familiar and comfortable with their neighbors. The vlog part was certainly a new experience. I completely recommend it; we watch YouTubers daily, but do we ever put thought into what work goes into their process? I have a newfound appreciation for them after completing this assignment. Can I advocate that this project is worth at least 5 stars?

Oh, and my message at the end of the video isn’t very clear: I mostly wanted to say that it is hard to socialize with others, so we should use this time to socialize with ourselves. Please note that I do intend to privatize this video at the end of the semester since it advertises my location.

80’s Mash-Up Movie Style!

For my first Video Assignment Bank project I opted to the mash-up trailers assignment, which seems to be a popular choice. It’s actually a lot of fun! Although, warning it does take a bit of your time. I found this assignment was a great way to reintroduce myself to iMovie (I had only really used it once before to make our DS106 trailer). The iMovie platform is fairly user friendly. I am sure there are a lot of other cool features I could have played around with, but for this assignment I wanted to get the basics down.

My first task was to pick movies. In all my trailer uses three – The Breakfast Club (which contains the majority of visual and audio clips), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Sixteen Candles. After made it so each trailer would be easily accessible to me as I went to edit in iMovie. Every audio clip and/or video clip was trimmed from the full length trailers (every.time.). I’m sure there is probably an easier way of doing it, but I was already on a role and didn’t want to add any new information.

I watched and rewatched each trailer a multitude of times and mentally noted clips I thought could work together. It was nice to have my phone and laptop so that I could watch the individual trailers on my phone and then create and piece together the clips in iMovie on my laptop. That minimized the number of tabs I needed to flip between to complete the assignment.

Line on top of image is the scale to adjust speed.

There are quiet a bit of detached audio flies that are overlaid on video clips from different movies. There are also a few instances where I had to detach the audio file from the video clip in order to blend the audio into the next clip. I slowed a few visual clips down (click on the clip, there is a line with two dot icons on the top of the clip in the editing section and drag it to the left or right to manipulate the speed – it works for audio too) so that the audio files could run the length of the video.

The biggest challenge was audio. While I lowered the volume in the Ferris Bueller clips, but the background music clearly does not match the upbeat Breakfast Club music. I unfortuently, could not figure out a way to try to fix that. My guess is that I would likely need to deconstruct the audio in a different audio editing software to do so.

It’s by NO means perfect, but I did have a good time creating it! ?

Crystal’s Olden Days

Crystal’s Past

Crystal was an 80’s teenager girl; some of her struggles
were she was walking everywhere making it hard to be punctual when all her friends
met up at the local video arcade to have fun around all the beeping games and
kids cheering. The video arcade is where Crystal and her friends checked out
all the other local and nearing town boys; too shy to ask any of the boys out, no
cell phone numbers to exchange, too cool since the only hot movie idol back
then was Patrick Swayze and his bad boy moves. Crystal’s teenage image of an 80s
boy was he had to have the moves, have the right change and not play Atari because
that is what her brothers were into and those Atari game consoles were
annoying. They took up the TV, they were noisy, and they took up all your
attention. It was hard for Crystal to grow up in the 80s, she wanted the latest
copy of Thriller from Michael Jackson but she didn’t have a car, she walked
everywhere, her parents had a car but it utilized for work, errands, and gas
was just too much to afford. Growing up in the 80s was hard for Crystal, she
got by by doodling on her drawing pad to layout the next best dress for prom.

Crystal finally graduated high school with all of her other
80s friends. They were set on a path with never ending dreams to be somebody.
To Crystal, she wanted to be happy, to meet someone and get a job so she can
afford the latest acid-washed jeans. She registered for night school at the community
college and started working for the local grocery store. Coming into adulthood
was hard for Crystal; in her eyes, she had real struggles, sharing a car to get
to work and school, not having that one pager to exchange texts, and always
sitting by the house phone to pick up when it rang, just in case the call was for
her.

Crystal managed to get through night school and earned her associate degree. Her next adventure was to enroll at the university in the big city and get her degree in English since she dreamed of being an editor.

Week 2 Assignment Bank Finds

Concert I’d want to be at? 1980s Bad Tour

At one point in time all I did was live and breathe Micheal Jackson, as he remains an icon in our music culture. The one concert I would’ve wanted to be at was his, as they were electric and adventurous (at one point I had memorized the opening act number and dance sequence to the Bad world tour concert). I was extremely devastated when he passed, as he passed away in August of 2009 and my father had surprised my sister and I in May of that year with tickets to see his “This Is It” tour in October. For this assignment I copied a photo from google and imported into photoshop for my mac, where I then also imported a selfie of myself (and how I would react at a concert of his) and with the cut tool removed the background of my photo to look as if I were an audience member. (I learned that I still obviously need a bit more work in photoshop)

DS106 Reacts: Me hiding (procrastinating) from my work; me when it sneaks up on me.

This week I chose to watch the movie Batman, that was released in 1989 as I found it interesting for being such a superhero fan, I had never watched any of the Batman films (I guess you can say I’m more of a Marvel fan.) I also found it interesting that it was a top grossing film in the 80s, so I thought why not? I found myself fascinating over the actor who played the Joker, Jack Nicholsan, in this movie and began to compare it to the Joker movie that came out recently, who starred the actor Joaquin Phoenix, and I’d say both actors executed their role excellent. There was one particular scene I found amusing when the robbers thought they were safe, then all of a sudden Batman appears and they start to run for their lives. I thought that would be a funny meme or gif, thus when I found this assignment in the assignment box It was perfect. I screen recorded this certain scene off of Amazon Prime videos (the streaming device I watched the movie on), and turned it into a gif through a gif generator app called GIF Maker, and viola! I can make my own gifs now, a useful skill I have gained this week.  Now I just need to learn how to embed them on here (which is why I posted it to twitter.)

Haiku: Gotham

Gotham filled with crime
Know who will arrive in time
Batman saves the night

I found this to be a perfect assignment as I had just received a refresher on haikus from a daily create assignment, so I took the opportunity to incorporate my 80s movie I chose to watch and well, created this masterpiece (Joking! I’m a joker, if you haven’t already noticed. See what I did there?)
