Radio Bumper

This is my first shot at the DS106 Radio Bumper. For some reason, when I was creating the bumper I couldn’t stop thinking about the Looney Toons. I found the opening theme on Frogstar.com and added the theme in as an opener. I then clipped several different songs to create the message in the bumper. I complied all the clips together in Audacity.

Having an assignment like this that is so open to creative interpretation is amazingly fun, yet at the same time, frustratingly hard. You want to create something awesome and memorable and you have to narrow down which resources you use and the multitude of ideas that you have brainstormed. I played with the idea of adding in clips from Doctor Who, The Simpsons, and Star Trek. I toyed with the idea of a musical interlude, different sounds, and different song choices. This was the final cut and I had fun manipulating it until I was happy.

While I was making this bumper, I was trying to figure out how the Looney Toons figured into DS 106. Yet, I thought of all the fun and craziness that accompanies the Bugs Bunny and all his co-cartoons. It definitely makes sense now and has it says in the Tiny Toons theme, “Expect the Unexpected” which seems to be a guiding philosophy at DS 106.

So in the words of Porky the Pig, “That’s All Folks!”

Six Seconds Mashup

Take six very short fragments from six different songs and ensemble them into a single piece.

To start off in Audio, I decided on the “Contest that nobody could win.” I love guessing games and especially musical guessing games. I clipped sections out of six songs and mashed them together in Audacity, which, is quickly becoming my favorite program on my computer.

Saying nobody could win seemed harsh to me, but I was so lost in which six seconds and which six songs to choose. Eventually, I scrolled through iTunes and saw a clump of songs by the same artist. I loved each song individually and decided, why not? So, guessing will be easy and there really isn’t a specific phrase it spells out. The only theme in this mashup, other than the artist, is the sections of song all (sort of) have a pronoun.

In my family, writing well is very important. Any piece of paper, text, email, or dialogue should be grammatically correct or else… I always liked pronouns. They are very social parts of speech. Pronouns remind us of someone or a group. He, She, We, They, even It all evoke an image in our heads. Pronouns are important and should not be ignored, but they are often taken for granted.

Movies by Numbers (the number 2)

I just found so many things with a theme of the number two. I found photos of the two train, a Katy Perry photo with two hearts, Derek Jeter with his #2 jersey on, a photo of 2 Penn Plaza, that huge building that is connected to Madison Square Garden, and then a photo of the twin towers and the Red Sox logo which has two sox in it. I put this together with movie maker. The song that plays over it is A Beautiful Mine by RJD2. People who know their TV recognize that as the theme to the hit AMC show “Mad Men”, which when you think about it, has two syllables when you think about it.

All I Have To Do Is Dream – Lyric Video

For my lyric video snippet, I decided to go back to the classics and chose to do a snippet from “All I Have To Do Is Dream” by The Everly Brothers. What I basically did was get an HD Cloud looping video from youtube to have a dreamy like theme to suit with the song. Afterwards, I layed the audio track down and applied the text for the lyrics. I added some fade in and fade out effects as well as added a slow zoom in effect to the text – trying to keep it as slow, light, and dreamy as possible.

Iconoclast.

Let’s Remix an Album Cover!

“Remix an Album Cover” is a Mashup assignment which you will find an album cover and remix it to represent something else. What you alter can be anything – it can be a play on the title, the image, the aesthetic, genre, etc.

This is my second mashup assignment and it deals with music again following my previous ds106 post. Since we got the chance to listen to an interesting presentation on open source last week by our fellow classmate, I thought I’d do a piece that pays a bit of hommage to him.

Before starting on the assignment, I had to choose between two to work on and they are both cool records. As you can see, I picked Symphony X’s Iconoclast (2011) over the other album Origin of Symmetry by Muse. One of the song from Origin of Symmetry is featured in my post on Alexander’s lecture. The reason for choosing Iconoclast is because the album is themed on what we humanity is concerned with – dehumanization and the power of technology in society.

To me, this piece is simplistic, but a serious mashup. The composition of the work is suppose to be similar to the cover art for the single Symphony of Destruction with the hand scraping on a surface of algorithm. I used Pixler this time to manipulate the images. None of the images are used directly in the piece without any effects. The image of algorithm was originally just a bunch of zeroes and ones, but I think the use of kaleidoscopic effect transformed the uninteresting arrangement to a nice base for the cover.

I personally want people to think deeply about the meaning of the word and the album title IconoclastBeing a rebel and thinking outside the box seems to always open up a road to the future. I was wondering if iconoclasm can be applied to the present higher education. Will something change in our future by rejecting the ordinary template we are provided?

Name that Tune – Music Mashup

The Assignment: I found this assignment, and always appreciate a chance to share good music with others, so I did it. :D The instructions were as follows:

For this assignment, I got short pieces from 6 different songs and put them into once piece. I tried creating the effect of tuning through the radio for this one by getting a sound of a radio tuning off of youtube and inserting it in between each song piece. Can you identify all 6 songs?

The Process/Story: I started by simply opening up iTunes and browsing through my music library. I knew I wanted to start off with a song by SCANDAL, since they are my favorite female group since I first saw them at Sakura Con 2008 in Seattle back when they were still an indies group. I also knew I wanted to include a B’z song, since they my favorite male group, (and definitely the most awesome, since every single one of their singles for the past 20 years has made #1 on the charts.)

Other than that, I picked songs with a similar harder rock style from some of my other favorite artists, asking for help from some members of my fansub group in IRC for YUI and ZARD since they know their songs by memory way better than I do.

Once I had the six songs picked, I loaded them in Audacity and used the selection tool and the shifted delete function to trim and shift the songs to parts where they would all fit together nicely.

After getting the song mix to sound the way I liked it, I went to the File>Export option, and choose to save the mix as a WAV so it wouldn’t lose any quality transcoding the music from the open source lossles FLAC I painstakingly ripped from my own CDs with Exact Audio Copy before moving to Japan.

Unfortunately, it seems Soundcloud transcodes the WAV to mp3 upon uploading, so it still loses some audio quality there, but at least the damage was minimized on my end.

Were you able to guess all the songs? Here’s the tracklist:

SCANDAL – SCANDAL no Theme (SCANDAL’s Theme)
ZONE – GOOD DAYS
Stereopony – Hitohira no Hanabira (A Single Flower Petal)
ZARD – Ai wa Kurayami no Naka de (Love is Within the Darkness)
B’z – BURN
YUI – My Generation

Driving Groovy

Continuing on a theme of tough cop genre, I made a movie mashup of Steve McQueen’s Bullitt mellowed out with the mellow sounds of Simon and Garfunkel’s 59th Street Bridge Song:

Slow down, you move too fast.
You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy.

That was the sentiment I thought of contrasting to the speed of the chase scene as well as the mostly unspokem tension between McQueen’s Bullitt character and Robert Vaughn’s slimy Chalmers.

I used MPEG ScreenClip to pull the classic car chase segment plus a few of the interchanges Bullitt and Chalmers. With not any dialogue during the chase, you have to imagine them cheerfully singing or at least toe tapping.

This was edited in iMovie, of course the hardest part trying to match music to lip movement- I did a ton of splits to pull our bits of motion. It is still really challenging to match it up cleanly. Mostly I wanted to explore the juxtaposition of the music to the action.

Driving Groovy… la la la la la la la

Lyric Video Snippet

“Lyric Video Snippet”: Take a short section of one of your favorite songs, and turn the song into a music video using only lyrics. The lyrics video will manipulate the size, color, font, shape, and movement of the lyrics showing on the screen to emphasize a theme, rhythm, pattern, meaning, or musical mechanism of the song.

I choose “Moment For Life” By Nicki Minaj because one it’s a good song, and two it was easy to work with.

Although it was hard fitting the lyrics to the actually words it could’ve been harder if I choose a song with a faster tempo. I used Windows Movie Maker Live, which isn’t the greatest program by the way ( I prefer the older version) I just added the picture as the background used the fade in from white in the beginning and 3-D ripple as soon as she started singing, and at the end I just used the credits animation for the song title and artist. It was pretty simple, but then again you need to have patients:

Ghost Opera.

FanFic Assignment: FacFic Picture

This is a fanfiction assignment which you “take the name or title of your favorite band, song, movie, or tv show and display it in the form of photography”. The image you create needs to somehow capture your theme.

My all-time favorite band is Kamelot when they were with their former singer Roy Khan. Many of my favorite bands come from either the ’70 or the ’80s like Rainbow (with Dio or Graham Bonnet,), Show-Ya, and Iron Maiden. Anyway, Kamelot is an awesome power metal band I recommend to people. Their music is theatrical and not too loud for non-heavy metal listeners.

I chose the title track from the Ghost Opera album (released in 2007) for this assignment. To fully understand what is happening in the picture, you would want to watch the video for the song. Check the lyrics as well, to get the feel of it.

As I imagined, the creative process demanded working with paths and cutting. Everything was done using Gimp. Through the process, I came up with a bit of new ideas that altered my initial intentions such as adding a glow of light, filtering the background with a newspaper-ish effect, and so on.

I have a fond memory of Ghost Opera from back when I was in high school. I knew the band existed, but I didn’t really discover them until I actually listen to the song “Ghost Opera”. The album was also the very first Kamelot records I bought. Soon after the purchase, I had to listen to them more. Another thing that I remember about it is that me and my ex got to know each other by me lending the album to him. Isn’t it kind of peculiar that a heavy metal record can draw people together?
