Bad Guy: Not the Billie Eilish Song

Original DS 106 Assignment: Bad Guy Business Card (2 stars)

I was recruited by a local Chicago group known as the Kumbia Kingz to make business cards for them. They are a group of Chicano-Latino members of over 20. Upon meeting, they explained the business cards they needed was to “promote” their group for “music.” This is their group picture. I had a 30 minute meeting with them and gave them a 72 hour time frame to fulfill their request.

Have had news coverage done of them where this photo came from

Step 1: Going to trusty Canva. Open Canva at canva.com

Step 2: Type “business card” into the search and select a template you prefer or it gives you the options to start with a blank one. For this “group” we are going to use main colors from their photo being black, white, and the jorts blue.

Step 3: For this “group” to create a more friendly and less obvious theme, I am using part of the photo above, zooming in on the two front members and create some color blocking on the card.

Step 3: Add font. This is where key words are needed and contact information if possible. For this group, some Old English font fits the group. The typical “Old English” that is found in Microsoft Word is not available, so with a quick Google search, I found which similar ones are available in Canva Free.

Step 4: Creativity. Creativity. Creativity. Using information provided as well as external research allow for best results.

Step 5: Since these are going to be business cards, we can select the “Print Business Cards” button in the right corner and edit the type of paper, finish, and number of cards to fulfill the request.

Step 6: Print cards and send invoice! Whatever they may or may not be up to, as long as your paid is out of your control. Save the file and provide to them for an extra fee.

For the sake of being actually afraid of Chicage Gangs, I did a different group which is actually a music group, Kumbia Kingz, which is not (as far as I know) affiliated with the Lxxxn Kingz from Chicago. Enjoy their song! This one is about not having money, but only love to give.

Bad Guy Business Card

Do you have anything that you want to smuggle across the ocean? Do you want to do it cheaply and efficiently? Well then call Frank! Frank is great at bringing things over secretly so no one knows where you got it!

I saw this assignment that Paul created about Bad Guy business cards. I thought this would be great to make for someone within The Wire. I was deciding between the Greeks, Nick Sobotka, or Frank Sobotka. I decided to go with Frank because he was the head guy at the port but he can also keep things under wraps. He also knew when the group was watching him. He was great at helping people out.

Now on another note I thought this would be a great advertisement for Frank’s “business” he runs with the Greeks. Now This business card would be useful before the end of season 2, so now this wouldn’t help at all. But I did have a lot of fun making this assignment! I used photoshop (again) to create this business card. I just placed the text then I took the truck from my Minimalist TV Poster to create the “logo” for Frank’s business. Frank was very good at keeping things under wraps, while still making things look like they were completely normal.

For this assignment I chose to make a Bad Guy Business Card. This character is from the movie: No Country for Old Men.

I made this in Photoshop. First I opened it using a yellow color and imposed the picture of Anton on the left. Then I used the filter called note paper to give him that effect. Under image balance, I changed around the numbers for the graininess andĀ reliefĀ as well and gave it that orange color.

For the Font I picked a font calledĀ Plantagenet Cherokee. Also under layers, I used the effect Inner Shadow and changed the color to red.

Bad Guy Business Card-ā€The Situationā€

Bad Guy Cards Assignment is pretty simple, make a business card for a bad guy. I choose “The Situation” because I thought it will be fun to create.

First…find a great picture of Mike and crop him out using the Magnetic Lasso Tool thenĀ IĀ used the “Film Grain” filter. Then…I did the same with this photo expect I didn’t use any filters.

After I found the background picture and used the Hue/Saturation to change the color..

I added the two layers and a couple of text, changed the blending options and Boyah!!

Frank Booth Business Card

So what’s really surprised me recently is how my phone could suddenly be such a big part of my design process. I’ve used Photoshop and Illustrator for years, to touch up photos, create logos, set typography, etc. But in the past few weeks I’ve been bouncing images back and forth between my mac and my phone just so I could use these amazing photo image adjustment tools that I don’t have on my computer. In particular I’ve been using Snapseed an iPhone app that maintains the original image’s resolution and allows for multiple passes with filters unlike apps like Instagram.

I created this Frank Book Business card based on the frame below from the film Blue Velvet.

After deleting the background, I converted the image to grayscale and applied a Halftone Pattern filter, which emulates old printing processes to emulate grays with lots of tiny black dots.

Next I imported this image into Illustrator and used one of my favorite techniques which is to convert bitmap images into vectors using the Livetrace tool. After that I did some additional vector work, type setting, and the placement of the Pabst Blue Ribbon logo. To bring me to this point in the design:

Here is where I would have normally stopped and been fairly satisfied with the work. But lately I’ve been importing this work next to my phone and doing additional filter work to produce the final result above.

Right now it feels like a new process, that leads to some interesting rich results. I worry that I might lean too much on some canned computer filters to create a particular ‘look,’ but for now I’m sticking with it.

Below are the before and after phone edited versions of a business card for Sailor from the Lynch film Wild at Heart. And thanks to Paul Bond for the inspiration for the bad guys business card assignment.

downloadĀ Honestly… This was my laziest work ever… But i feel the need to crank out something. Just been really strapped on time and I have not cranked out a DS106 assignment since the pioneer stage. So he is a quick business card I created for John Gotti, for those of you who don’t know him he is a notorious mobster. I used this card generatorĀ to make a quick business card. Its very simple, anyone can do it.

Bad Guy Business Cards

Did I make up this crazy thing? Then I guess that means I should do something with it. So here’s mob boss Paulie Cicero. You don’t want to be in business with him, because you have to come up with his money every month no matter what.

Here’s a bit about how I did it:

Bad Guy Business Cards

Apparently, street gangs in Chicago, like the Hell’s Devils, used to have calling cards (see the gallery: http://bit.ly/pyuOEl). This makes me think that poor marketing gives evil-doers a bad image. Help some of them out by creating business cards for them. But not the Joker – that’s too obvious.

Good Guys Gone Bad in 5 Seconds

For this assignmenet, I picked five movies/tv-shows and one archetype that I took from each of them which was “Good Guys Gone Bad.” Basically 5 characters that started out to be the “Good Guys” but throuhgut the movie or tv show, became “Bad.” The first was Anakin from Star Wars, which you all know started out as Jedi and ended up a Sith as Dark Vader. The second one was Harvey Dent from The Dark Knight, who became Two-Face at the end. The third one was Shane from The Walking Dead, who started out as a good cop, however ended up as the antagonist. The fourth one was Obadiah Stane from Iron Man, who was along side Iron Man, however ended up turning on him. Finally, the fifth one was Walt from Breaking Bad, the name of the show tells you – he started out as an innocent chemistry teacher, however got into cooking meth and got his hands really dirty in the whole drug business. There’s nothing much to say about how the video was editing since it was a really short video which invlovled just taking short clips of the characters and putting it together. BTW, the video itself is not 5 seconds, however the footage is around that length.
