Glitch art is a genre of art based around digital artefacts. A digital artefact is the unexpected result of when a technology breaks. An artefact could be sound of a CD skipping or pixilation on a highly compressed Youtube video. Glitch has been called the “art of the artefact” and stretching the intended use of a device or file.

The heck with Milk. Got DS106? Design a new poster based on the Got Milk? ad campaign. Create your own from scratch or riff on one already out there. For your fun and further enjoyment download a version of the original Phoenix American font used in the campaign.

Mash-up Trailers

Create a trailer out of movie clips, tv show excerpts, news sources, viral videos, or even other trailers. Consider which pieces you are combining and what the new message is. Here is a template for a movie trailer green  screen intro. Have fun!!

Mash A Movie For DS106

Download different scene clips from one movie to create a short commercial for DS106. Clip, trim and remix them to let people know what DS106 is all about and how they can find us at ds106.us. Challenge yourself to overdub the audio to have the characters saying DS106 where it would be appropriate.  Also try and add the DS106 logo onto an object in a scene. Historical Selfies

Selfies are pretty terrible and associated with massive amounts of ego. Take the hubris and arrogance exemplified by Selfies at Funerals and Rich Kids of Instagram and apply them to a historical or literary figure on the eve of an impending disaster.

Take a classic piece of literature – something that begs to be read aloud – and have animated characters do a dramatic reading.

Story Telling Timeline

Using layers in an image editing program make a time line that tells a story. Tips: make it short and include events that lead up to the main event.  

Color Walk Time Lines

Choose a color and then take 20 minute walk in which you take a 5-8 pictures of the color as you encounter it. Then upload the photos to Flickr and create a time line using TimeLine JS

Backyard Photo Safari

Most likely your backyard has a story to tell. Or perhaps a park nearby will share its secrets.  With this assignment take your camera on a photo safari to capture interesting images of a place you frequent.  Cull your photos down to the best 5-10 images that when combined will tell a story.  Create a slide show and embed it into your blog.  Include a written or audio story telling component as well to help flesh out the story for your viewers.
