Emotions through Sound

Emotions through sound

This is an audio assignment and its worth 3 and 1/2 stars. For this audio assignment I had to display emotions through sound. So to keep going on with my horror frenzy that I have been doing with my other audio assignments I thought I would keep going with it. I decided to use the site freesound.org again for this assignment since it hasn’t let me down yet! I first went through and searched for evil laughter. I found three that I thought were different and would really bring a fear factor which is what I chose as my emotion fear. The first laughter sounded like one from Count Dracula and then I found the second one who sounded like a mad scientist. The last laughter that I found was of a witch with that signature laugh because it is close to halloween and I thought it would mesh in just fine with this audio. The last touch to this audio was putting in the screams of little girls. It made it seem like it came out of a children’s halloween story and they all ran away from the three evil laughs. If I could do anything to improve this I would add maybe some kind of audio that said “happy halloween” because I feel like that would have tied all the audio pieces together.

Emotion through Sound

The assignment Emotion through sound is worth 3.5 stars. I choose to convey the emotion that I have after I get out of a yoga class.  After a yoga class a feel internal peace. I know is yoga that is the main motive but I feel peace after I put my body in difficult and challenging positions. The music I play when I am doing yoga are mainly of waterfall, birds, and violin. For this assignment I choose those three sound and combine them in one track. All the sound I download them from Freesound.com.

Emotions through Sound – Sadness

Assignment

For this assignment, we had to find different audio clips or sounds effects and combine them to symbolize a certain emotion.I chose sounds that I thought represented sadness.

To complete this assignment, I found four different audio clips on freesound.org, and imported them into Audacity. I then trimmed them down and positioned them  to make the finished product. Finally, I exported the file to SoundCloud.

Wedding Emotion

For this audio assignment I had to create or display an emotion through sound effects. I ended up finding a beautiful acoustic version of the songs “Here Comes the Bride” and “Falling in Love With You” mashed together. I knew as soon as I heard it that I wanted to convey the emotion love by playing music and sound effects that you would normally hear at a wedding.

In this audio clip there was the song that I mentioned above that I found on SoundCloud as the main song. I added the sound effect of the baby giggling and crying that I found on FreeSound because every wedding I have been to there was always a baby (I don’t know why but it’s kind of weird). I also added the sound effect of a woman crying that I also found on FreeSound but don’t worry, those are happy tears. I needed one more sound effect added to my audio clip so I put in the clapping and cheering that I found on FreeSound because there is always clapping and cheering after the big kiss at the end of the ceremony. My overall goal was to make the listener feel like they are at an actual wedding which would evoke happiness and love in the listener.

Wonder

Conveying the process of wonder and coming to a realization.

I picked the emotion of wonder because I thought it could be interesting to try to represent that process in sound.  Creating it was as simple as finding various sounds on freesound.com by looking up “wonder” and other synonyms and trying to mesh them together in Audacity into something that represents the process of thinking (at least to me).  It starts with a small thought that builds up until it goes away for a moment but returns in a sudden realization.

Audio Story: Emotions Through Sound

So for my next audio challenge, I decided to choose one with cool sounds and combine them all to make an entire track. I really enjoyed this one because it sounded so great at the end! :)

I did the “Emotions Through Sound” Assignment where I needed to convey a certain emotion using 4 sounds. My sound was serenity.

I actually was busy commenting on another student’s blog and she did the same assignment and I really liked it, so I decided to do it as well. She gave some really nice pointers so I took them to heart and learned a bit more about Audacity and audio itself!

First, I went to FreeSound which has a variety of sounds you can download directly onto your Audacity application. I looked for ambiance-like sounds: birds chirping, trees, crickets. I found four that I liked: Birds, frogs, crickets at night, and rain on leaves. Personally, I think nature can be very peaceful, so I knew exactly which sounds I wanted to use for serenity. I downloaded them all, and dragged them into the application. I played around with the sounds as a whole in order to convey my emotion. Then, I played around with the Effects tool, and turned on “Fade Out” so it fades at the very end. I stalled the birds chirping until a little later into my audio track, and had the frogs really loud at the beginning using the “envelope” tool.  I also made the rain more subtle so it wouldn’t stand out behind the other sounds, by decreasing the volume.

I hope my sound is very serene!

Fear of War- Audio Assignment 1551

For my second audio assignment I completes “Emotions Through Sounds“. We had to use at least 4 sounds to convey an emotion. I decided to do fear and what I fear most is war. So I clipped together different war sounds; guns shooting, a man screaming in terror, planes flying, and background noise to make this environment. I overlapped the sounds and had the screaming happening first and then die out to represent either the person’s death or maybe his escape. I retrieved the sounds from freesound.org in order to make my audio assignment.

PEACE through Sound- Audio Assignment 1551

For one of my audio assignments for the week, I chose to do “Emotions through Sound.” I figured this would be a good one to start with in order to learn how to upload, clip, merge sounds, etc. I wanted to convey a sense of calmness, or peace. I picked four different sounds which I found on a website called pdsounds which I will link below in the tutorial. These sounds were (1) rain on a window, (2) birds chirping in the morning , (3) animals in a rain forest and (4) waves on a pebble beach. I felt they convey a sense of calmness and peace in the listener. Here is how I did this assignment:

  1. I searched on Google for audio files which I could download, and I found pdsounds. They offer a vast library of various audio files.
  2. I searched the pdsounds website for audio files which I felt depicted the emotion I wished to convey.
  3. Download the audio files to your desktop.
  4. I used Audacity to create this audio assignment. (Super helpful, and somewhat easy to use program.)
  5. Import all 4 audio files to Audacity.
  6. Use the “Selection Tool” to highlight the select times in the individual files you would like to use.
  7. After selecting the sections, click the “Trim Audio” button. Repeat steps 6 & 7 for the remaining audio files you’ve uploaded.
  8. At this point, you can move the different audio segments around into a certain order using the “Time Shift Tool”.
  9. When finished, go to “File”, then “Export Audio”. Save as an MP3 file.
  10. Upload to SoundCloud and publish for everyone to listen!

I think I did well on this, it being my first Audio Assignment for the class. I hope you all enjoy, and feel a great sense of peace while listening!
