This week, we were tasked with completing 3 audio assignments from the assignment bank, all of which much total at least 8 stars. For my first assignment, I decided to tackle the “Emotions Through Sound” task worth 3 stars.
To begin, I went ahead and looked at some of the posts from ds106 bloggers who had already completed the assignment and came across this post from the most recent summer session of ds106. I found the step-by-step guide really helpful and it’s what ultimately convinced me to decide to tackle this project.
After downloading Audacity and updating my hardware since I just upgraded to Windows 10, I went online and downloaded FreeSound. I searched around and was really impressed with the variety of different sound clips available. I decided that the emotion I would try to express using these clips would be anxiety, so I set about finding 4 sounds that could be combined to convey that feeling.
I settled on using a heartbeat, a recording of someone jogging, heavy breathing, and a thunder clap. I followed the instructions posted here to learn about the different tools available in audacity and then got to work. I REALLY enjoyed getting to manipulate and layer the sounds in order to make it seem realistic, and I’m pretty happy with the results. After a lot of tinkering with timing and amplifying/softening different layers, I feel like I hit a combination that does a good job conveying not only a realistic grouping of sounds, but also the emotion I was aiming for.
This is the first time I’ve used this kind of software, so any feedback or tips would be greatly appreciated!
Happy Storytelling!
