So I decided to do the one story, four icons assignment for the design assignments for this week! I decided to do one of my most recent favorite movies. Hope you guys can figure it out! :)

Here’s a hint: this movie is still in theaters and just came out recently, definitely a tear jerker!

Layla Arkwood in Four Icons

Layla In 4 Icons

Layla enjoys the color red. Given the fact that her hair is a blazing red and she enjoys the same color, many have taken to calling her the Flame Princess. However, regardless of her mood or outfit, she always wears two things: her mother’s necklace and Mikhail and Nikolai’s gift. Her mother had given her that necklace the day she died, reminding her not to hate Terrence for essentially killing her and to keep him as far away from the mob scene as possible. Her bracelet was given to her by her bodyguards the day they were finally able to afford something (Layla had found them near death under a bridge). They had said that it took them a day to find something for her because they had never shopped for a woman before. They had been so proud to give it to her that she allowed tears to form in her eyes (and people never see Layla cry). So, she chose to wear it everyday as a reminder that she saved them and that they love her for it. And the gun is self explanatory. Layla’s always packing . :D

It’s just like Charades

To start things off easy, I did this 2.5 star assignment. I had recently seen this movie, and I think that it’s popular and distinguishable enough to be easy to guess.

I can see why this assignment is a DS106 favorite- it turns into a game! I used the Noun Project as suggested, and logged in using my Facebook information. I then selected what I thought were the most memorable parts of this movie and found symbols for them. I then downloaded the images as .png files and dragged them into a word document where I lined and resized everything before taking a screenshot. I found that the quality and variety of images on NP were really impressive- I was able to pick exactly the right eye to convey my message.

One Story, Four Icons

For this design assignment, we had to tell a story using only four icons.

Can you guess what it is? I will post a link to what the story is in my next weekly summary blog post.

This assignment was recommended as it is a favorite in the ds106 community. I went to thenounproject.com for the icons and I had to make an account to download them, but was simple with the option to use your Facebook account to sign in. Also, I picked the free account and chose to give credit to the creators of each icon when I downloaded them instead of paying. Once I had my four icons selected and downloaded, I pasted them to a word document and took a screenshot of my story. Going back to the nounproject.com, I was really impressed with the selection they had. There were so many choices for each icon I searched for.

Can You Guess the Movie?

Four Picture Movie Poster

For this Design Assignment I created a movie I have grown into to become one of my favorite movies. I won’t give away the title, but I will say it is considered a scary movie. I say I’ve grown to love the movie, because I really don’t like scary movies. I don’t like any of the ones with demons or crazy special effects. I’m can deal with more realistic scary subjects, I don’t know why. People always ask me why I would be more okay watching something that can actually happen. My response is always, well in those situations there’s an actually solution, mostly make sure your armed, but in other horror films there’s no way to stop a demon.

To make the assignment I used The Noun Project website to find my icon and then put them together using powerpoint. Let me know if you can guess the movie!

I watch a lot of movies so this assignment was right up my alley. However, I’m not sure how many movie lovers take this class so I chose a movie which is fairly well known but might not have been seen by anyone recently. It can be tricky sometimes to find icons which display what your trying to describe. I found most of mine pretty quickly and tried to choose ones which were aesthetic for the most part. I simply pasted them together in pixlr and it turned out fine.

One Story, 4 Icons

This design assignment was to chose 4 icons to summarize a movie or show into 4 basic icons and have others guess. Since I want to relate it to The Wire, I’m just going to let you know I chose season 2 episode 9 and explain why I picked these 4. I got these icons from the Noun Project.

I picked the gun because of the gunfight at the Westside projects where the little boy got shot through the window.

The women represents the Greek brothel that the department busted.

The duck is Ziggy’s pet whom he killed by feeding it hard liquor.

Last, the syringe symbolizing the ongoing drug deals and addicts in the episode and throughout the show.

Guess the episode

This assignment (2 stars) was a little challenging to think of just icons that summarized an episode. I picked on episodes from this weeks assignment (episodes 9, 10, or 11). I will reveal the answer in my weekly summary!

Icons

Process:

I picked an episode and thought deeply about the main points that occurred. This was so challenging but the symbols I picked, I think represent the episode well.

I used the Noun Project to find the symbols I needed. Then I uploaded them to picmonkey to create a side by side collage.

I myself am very knowledgeable about movies. Especially ones from the 1980s and further back.  So when I saw this assignment I was extremely excited. This story takes us back to before most of us were even born. The key is to pay attention to details. I will admit this is fairly easy because I could not resist doing this particular movie. Because this particular movie is fairly popular I will not give you anymore hints. Good luck on your guesses!

Turtle Power

The third design assignment that I chose was One Story/Four Icons, where our task was to take a movie/story/or popular event and reduce it down to four simple icons. I thought plenty of different movies when deciding which to do. I went through movies like, The Lord Of The Rings, Spiderman, Harry Potter, and plenty more. I finally decided upon a movie and here are my icons:

Ninja Turtles (2)

Any idea what movie it is yet? Here are some hints:

1. This movie released earlier this summer

2. It also released about 20+ years ago

4. This movie stars Megan Fox

If you don’t know what it is, here’s my complete photo with the title of the movie:

Ninja Turtles (1)

Yep, it’s The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I chose this movie, because it was one of my favorite movies growing up, and I still really like the new movie. I reduced this movie down to these four icons for a reason. The turtle, represents the fact that they are turtles. The Katana (sword) represents one of the weapons that the four Ninja Turtles use. The third icon, the ninja, represents exactly what they are, ninjas. And the last icon, the pizza, represents the Ninja Turtles’ true love, some New York Style pizza.

I created this image using Google Draw, and it was pretty simple. I was able to retrieve all of my icons from Google Images, and from there I simply rearranged them and added text to the bottom.

This assignment One Story/Four Icons is worth a total of 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Giving me a total of 9.5 stars on the week, leaving me a total of 5.5 stars to go for the week. I hope you guys enjoyed this post, I know I enjoyed this assignment. If you would like to check it out, you can find it here. Til’ next time everyone.
