Love Letters from Kairi

DS106 Assignment:

Design a postcard that might be sent from the location in a movie or work of fiction.

The Process:

For the front side of the postcard, I used a photo I took on vacation in the USVI and edited the exposure, saturation, contrast, tint, and so forth. After all that, I added a greeting text.

For the back side, I found a postcard template, then added text and inserted a small picture to fit the stamp box.

The Story:

There’s not much of a story behind this. I’ve been replaying Kingdom Hearts the past few days with my friends, so it’s been stuck in my mind.

ds106 Assignment #5 Postcards From Magical Places

Assignment:  “Postcards From Magical Places” For this assignment, I had to design the front and the back of a post card that might be sent from a fictional place.

I was watching this series called Madoka Magica, and this one scene always really impressed me, I fell in love with the design of the witch world from this one episode thus I decided to make a postcard for that world.

In this series, the characters have to go into the world of witches, in this case the world was focused on roses and was all in German . the witch world also has its own alphabet which are all runes, so I thought it would be a fun idea to have all the writing on the post card be in runes.

I managed to get all the  letters for that alphabet from this fan wiki I also got the main front image from this website.
I looked online for the back of the postcard and I used this image

I put all the images and runes together using a program called Paint tool SAI, which is just a type of photoshop thing.

and here is what is written on the postcard:

(front)  Vertrag (which means “contract” in German)

(back)   Die blühenden Rosen sollen der Königin sofort geschenkt sein, Und die schlechten Blumen
steigen auf die Guillotine. ( The blooming roses shall be presented to the queen immediately, and the bad flowers go to the guillotine.)

this was all text that was written in the background of some scenes of that episode.

This assignment took some time, but it was lots of fun :)

Greetings From Your Subconscious

Design Assignment: Postcards From Magical Places

My group and I at first were going to do a postcard from the movie Harry Potter but then came up with an idea from Inception. Since Inception deals with the dream within a dream concept and the different levels of your conscious, we decided to follow the theme on the front of the postcard.

For my part, I typed out the message on the back of the postcard that was to Arthur from Eames. Eames writes to Arthur about not creating such a chaotic and complicated scene in his subconscious.

Hey, next time when designing a dream world, be sure to make it not in the middle of snowy mountains with a huge command center to break into? Thanks.

Sincerely, Eames

Spring Break Vacation

Ben and I were thinking about our Spring Break options and we were thinking about the Catskills of New York.  Not only is it beautiful, but it’s the home of a very famous resort.  In our research, we discovered this old postcard.

Dancing sounds like fun!

If we don’t end up going, we’ll probably still be working on DS106 assignments.

Postcard from an undisclosed location – Obi-Wan to Anakin.

This time, I decided to tackle the “Postcards from Magical Places” assignment. I was browsing through my internal data bank of geekery, fantasy and sci-fi movies in order to think of a topic I could do this one on. I wanted the movie to be popular so the message would be easily understood by the people looking over this. So I started thinking, “What is on the same level of popularity as Lord of the Rings?” Then it came to me – Star Wars.  I like the series, but I have never been an avid follower, I know enough to have a conversation, but not if that conversation is with an uber fan.

Looking at the criteria, I followed every thing to the point. I included 2 sides, a timestamp, and a normal stamp. I played around with the message part a little. The message I wrote does have to do with the plot of the movie – Anakin realizing his relation to Padme, having a “falling out” with Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan moving to the desert for isolation and the discovery of Anakins son, Luke. The aspect I played with was Obi-Wans reaction to the situation of being alone in the desert. I developed a situation where Obi-Wan wanted to make amends with his former padawan.

One thing I had to work around for this, for realism, was the fact that Obi-Wan didnt want to be found, so I made the outside of the postcard a picture that Obi-Wan took about an event that made him miss Anakin, as opposed to his actual location.

Postcards From Magical Places

Design the front and back of a postcard that might be sent from the location of a movie or a work of fiction. Both sides of the cards must be created as graphics.

The fornt should use graphic design elements that provide a sense of place or use the classic motifs of old postcards (“Greetings from ______”)_, both pictures and text. The back of the post card should contain a stamp and postmark that fits with the theme of the movie, as well as an addressee and a message that fits the plot as well.

The inspiration was a fanfiaction assignment created by a UMW student in Spring Semester 2011- see the excellent set of LOTR cards at http://cupofchai.umwblogs.org/2010/11/22/fanfiction/
