Simple, Everyday Makeup

For my third and last video assignment for the week, I decided to do the Show Me How! assignment (3 stars), which prompts me to time lapse anything. One of the examples was how someone does their makeup, and I thought–since I already have to do a formal video for something else–I figured I might as well kill two birds with one stone by showing how I do my makeup, and with my makeup already on, I could film my other video! Especially, considering the situation we’re all in, I don’t have any other reason to wear makeup since I’m not going outside.

For a long time I refused to wear makeup, and yes I was one of those people who rolled their eyes at people who wore it every day (especially heavy makeup), wondering why they’d bother making time for it. However, during my time in Japan, not only did I start getting into dressing up, but I also got into wearing makeup more regularly. So I thought I’d show how I do my simple, everyday makeup.

When I made this video, there was a hyper lapse option in my camera, but after filming, I didn’t realize how short and fast it actually turned out. However, I didn’t want to have to take off my makeup and redo it, so when I edited the video, I slowed it down to 25% speed. In the background, I played one of my favorite songs (had to insert a bit of my k-pop nerd self).

Show Me How!

Watching makeup tutorials on YouTube is probably one of my favorite pastimes.  There are so many different ways to do your makeup and a wide variety of products that could be used.  In this video I decided to do a sped up video of how I do my makeup everyday.

This 4 star assignment was very simple. All it required was to show how to do something using a time-lapsed video.

How I Did It:

I first filmed the video using the camera on my iPhone. I then uploaded it to Windows Movie Maker. There wasn’t any editing that needed to be done in terms of trimming the footage so all I had to do was add the background music and save the finished video so it could be uploaded to YouTube.

Extremely Simple Timelapsed Makeup

When I was younger, I used to shun all those girls who wore makeup. Especially if they wore it every day. “If they manage to spend so much time on their makeup everyday, I can’t help but think about how poor their grades are” and “I’m not like other girls; I don’t wear makeup.”

I started to come around to it in 10th grade, but it was only the occasional eyeliner. For the most part, actually, I wouldn’t wear makeup just because I didn’t have the time to put it on, and I thought I didn’t look good with it. Then again, I also hated my appearance in general. I hated everything about my face.

Last semester (Spring 2015), I decided I was done not putting any effort into my appearance. I was done having my roommate point out that I wore the same clothes every day, never got dressed, never put any effort into how I looked. I was done hiding behind my hoodie and jeans. Nearly every day last semester, I got dressed in clothes that weren’t hoodies and jeans. I put on makeup. I made an effort to look good.

I’ve been doing that every day this semester too. The funny thing about makeup is that people think you wear it because you’re insecure, or you want to appear fake. I wear makeup because it makes me feel beautiful, and shows me that I am beautiful. I can take off my makeup, I can go without wearing it, and I’ll look in the mirror and think “Wow, I have a nice face!” I don’t think I could do that before.

Makeup lets me dress up and show off those features about myself that I like. My skin, my eyes, my lips; putting makeup on is like putting on real clothes. Sometimes I don’t want to do it, but I force myself to anyway, because I know it’s good for me. And that makes me love it even more, and I’ll get those days where I wake up and decide “I’m going to dress up today!”. I think I’m rambling at this point.

Moral of this post: Makeup rules, anyone who says otherwise sucks, whether or not you wear makeup is your choice and as long as you love yourself everything is okay!

That’s why I decided to film a video of me putting on my makeup this morning, for the Show Me How assignment (4 stars).

Similarly to my two assignments last week, the only change was speeding up the footage

It Could Live in Your Fridge

Hello, Hello!

I feel like I have made some progress with movie making and editing this week! We were required to do at least two video assignments worth a total of 8 stars.

The Assignment

The assignment can be found here and it is worth 4 stars. The exact directions are:Using a GoPro or a time lapse app; explain something to us. For instance, you could show us how you or your character cooks for their family, what they do at work, or even as zany as how they do their makeup! Make it funny, make it emotional–make it anything you want it to be! Have fun with it!

The Story

I didn’t use any of the suggested methods but I feel that I still successful created a time lapse while also telling a story, since that was the point. My mother was, and is, an extremely neat person. I mean, she would vacuum the house everyday and spent hours scrubbing and organizing. It seems that I may have inherited that trait… I do actually enjoy cleaning. I enjoy doing dishes and I love organizing. I also avidly believe that the small spaces of a house get forgotten about sometimes: behind the washing machine, under the bed, in the cabinets, the fridge. Although this might not seem like a huge deal, I have to say that things have a way of hiding in those spots and accumulating. It’s a pretty nasty sight if you are moving the washing machine for the first time in a year. I hope that maybe this video will inspire some of you to take on a cleaning and organizing project! I understand that there are people out there who REALLY hate cleaning and they can’t seem to keep the clothing off the floor of their bedroom but I have to say that a clean environment shows that you care about where you live and that you care about guests when they arrive. It’s pretty important to be aware of these things and try to take care of them. Of course, hats off to the mothers who also work and go to school or the fathers who work over 40 hours a week and come home to cook dinner. Everybody gets busy, so it’s not shameful to let a few things go. However, if you are coming home and playing video games even though your house has been dirty for a week….that’s a no no.  The main points I am making this week with both of my video assignments is that we need to take more responsibility for our lives. That includes the environment we live in. Below is a time-lapse video of me cleaning the fridge and reorganizing it. I can’t say how many times I have found moldy, nasty food hidden away in a corner so a good fridge cleaning ever now and then is a great idea!

The Process

Below is a video tutorial with me talking about some of the things I did for this video. It should be very helpful. First thing you should do is get all of your video recordings and find some music. Incompetech is a great website for royalty free music. Also, may classical pieces are considered public domain and can be used in any way that you might like. The music I am using for my video is Claire de Lune, suite Bergamasque L 75. III by Steve Anderson. I don’t remember exactly what website I got it from but if you search “public domain” or “royalty free” classical music in Google, you should be able to find a few websites. Once you have all these things ready, open up your iMovie and make some movie magic.

Crane Creation

This assignment (4 stars) required me to “explain something” to an audience.

This was actually pretty difficult for me. At least content wise. I’m not extremely sure of myself when it comes to teaching others. It’s just a skill I haven’t had much practice in. Same goes for just doing something in front of someone in general.

For a little while, I just sat around my room thinking about what I was really good at. About fifteen minutes in, I glanced over towards my desk and noticed a single sheet of origami paper. Things clicked right then. I knew what I was going to show you guys.

Paper Cranes.

My knowledge of making paper cranes goes way back to elementary school. There was this book called Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes. It was an incredibly emotional, perhaps too emotional for a small child. Still, I did enjoy it.

Sadako_and_the_thousand_paper_cranes_00

Hi! I’m the most depressing book ever!

Without spoiling, it’s basically about this young girl who comes down with Leukemia who begins to make paper cranes. The idea was to make a thousand paper cranes and in exchange be granted a wish. (This is a real thing, to read more on it click here!)

So of course my little elementary school class decided to learn to make cranes too. Of course they were all terrible because we had no patience. But it was a starting ground. And as years went on I got better at it.

Moving on to the video, the filming aspect went really well. Everything was filmed using my cellphone and a tripod. I did it all in one take. For editing I used iMovie on the mac. I imported it in and cut the video into separate clips.

This is where things got a little weird. In my head I knew how I wanted the video to be. However prior to this, I had never done the timelapse thing. So I had to figure out how to do that.

Turns out it was incredibly easy. There’s a button you hit and then just chose the speed you want the clip to be.

4x faster!

4x faster!

Little rabbit tells you the speed is changed

Little rabbit tells you the speed has been changed!

After all that was settled, I added in some music. After a little time on google searching through different Royalty Free Songs I found this one. It’s called Pixel Peeker Polka. It’s really upbeat and happy and I thought it fit well in my video.

Overall, I really like how the video came out. If I can figure out another subject I just might make another one. ( ´ ? ` )?
