Impactful Movie Scenes

I went way over board on this assignment and it took me hours to finish it so I didn’t want to cut the time down, but I had so much fun making this! The assignment was to select scenes from 3-5 movies that changed your life or made some sort of dramatic, traumatic, lasting, or emotional impact on you. I didn’t go into too much detail in the audio because the video I made was already really long, but the scenes I chose are really impactful in general and I think they kind of speak for themselves. Side Note: I uploaded this directly to my blog instead of to my youtube because of blocked content.

The first scene is from Freedom Writers. The women who speaks lived through the Holocaust and she makes a big impact on the students in the film. This makes the students start to realize that being rivals against each other, just because of their race, shouldn’t be a reason to prohibit their friendships with one another. That isn’t just a lesson for the students in the film to learn though, it’s something many people still need to realize and that’s why I chose this scene.

The second scene is from On the Basis of Sex. This scene portrays Ruth Bader Ginsberg speaking to a three judge panel in a court room. When a judge says to Ruth that the word “woman” isn’t in the U.S. Constitution and she responds, “Neither is the word freedom…your honor,” it hits so much differently than earlier in the film when Ruth declares to her daughter, “you are the future.” The film is all around amazing but this scene specifically really hit home for me because of the real event had on our society.

The third scene is from Miracle. On the night the US played the Soviet Union in the medal round, Brooks gave a speech to inspire his team to pull off the greatest upset in sports history.  The opening line of his speech says, “Great moments are born form great opportunity.”  This line represents the idea that opportunities cannot give birth to a moment, it is a human quality.  Brooks is saying how his team is being given the chance that every team dreams of; defeating the enemy on way to winning a gold medal. I think that this speech can inspire so many!

The fourth scene is from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part two. The last movie in this iconic story of good versus evil filled with wizards and magic, the  inspiration in this scene stemmed from the most unlikely character, Neville Longbottom, who’s very timid and nervous throughout most of the movies. It is so breathtaking because for a lot of fans, they grew up through this series and when it comes to an end, but he says it perfectly when he says, “Harry’s heart did beat for us! For all us! It’s not over!”

The final scene comes from the movie The Art of Racing in the Rain.  I’ve been a dog lover my whole life but this story wasn’t just about a dog named Enzo but rather about life and all the ups and downs we experience, the highs and lows, losing loved ones, hard relationships…and through it all dogs are always there for us to provide comfort, a friendly bark, to lend a paw, to make us smile even on our toughest days. I relate to this a lot because my dog is my best friend and without doubt dogs are always there and this scene is so comforting.

Scenes of Lasting Memory

Original Assignment

This assignment is my favorite since I created my first GIF files. I enjoyed using Movie Maker, which I thought was surprising. It was too difficult to choose my three favorite movie scenes of all time. After ten or so minutes I decided on my three scenes.

The first is from Saving Private Ryan. It is my favorite war film. the classic D-Day invasion directed by Steven Spielberg will forever be remembered. Tom Hanks acting when stunned and in shock is admirable.

The second scene is from the movie The Shawshank Redemption. I first saw this film when I took a film study class in high school. I would have to say it is my favorite movie of all time and I happened to choose it among many great scenes in that movie.

The last scene features what I like to think as the creation of Wolverine. Wolverine had already existed (actually for almost a century) previous to the operation. This form of Wolverine is what people remember in what I think is a thriller.

So how did I create this assignment? It was not that difficult. I used the website SaveFrom.net to record the three scenes. I downloaded Movie Maker for Windows 10 to my laptop. Once I uploaded the scenes I used the Trim Tool to set the beginning and ending of each scene. You’ll notice you can move the scenes around. This is helpful if you did not upload in the order you wanted the scenes to show. Under the Home tab you may give the movie a title and an ending credit scene. Also under the Home tab is how I recorded my voice. Upon clicking annotation record you will be able to play the movie and talk as it plays. Under Options (Narration Tools) I was able to make my voice louder than the film so I could be heard. I exported the finished product and then uploaded it to YouTube.

3 Inspiring Video Moments

So, for this assignment, I made a video of a few really powerful and influential scenes. The one from Band of Brothers and Pay it Forward instantly came to mind when I saw this assignment, but I had to put a bit of thought into coming up with the third. Accordingly, as I viewed the scenes while making the assignment, the former 2 still, repeatedly, inspired quite a bit of feeling. The scene from Band of Brothers is really a great moment in film and in history, since the event actually took place. The scene in Pay it Forward, however, has a significance all its own. I delve into some of that in the video, but it really made a lasting impact or at least coincided temporally with a period of drastic change in my life. The last scene I included because of the single line that actually made me want to see what was really a sub-par movie in the first place. I waited the whole movie for that scene, and I can’t honestly say I was disappointed when it came. The line, “canceling the apocalypse,” gives me goosebumps when I think about it.
To create the video, I added the three clips together in movie maker and then extracted the full audio with audacity. I used audacity to lay my audio over the audio from the films, then I re imported both the audio and original video into movie maker, and then I added a few transitions and such.

Movie Scenes that Reflect Me

5 stars( http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/movie-scenes-that-changed-our-lives/ )

I choose three movie scenes that have had an impact on my life.

The first was the bar scene from Good Will Hunting. Everyone now in my adult life knows me as the woman who wonders. Who seldom stays still, but that was not always the case. In my young adult life I could not bring myself to life the island. I went from Barnegat High School straight to Ocean County Community College. I was afraid to leave my father alone, yet dreamed of the world beyond my beach oasis. But that is besides the point, many people, affluent people, on the island made it a point to talk trash about my poor degree. This scene captures my insecurities and plummets them.

The next scene is from Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. This movie has always captured my heart for its depiction of the older women’s friendship. All you have to do is ask Janaye and she will tell you that our friendship has seen more than its fair share of rocky times. The car scene has Teensy putting Vivi in her place and I love it. In this scene Teensy would be Janaye and I would be Vivi…

The last scene I have is from Practical Magic, a great film, that is more emotionally driven than the others. I hope that one day I can have meaningful relationships with my children that follow them into adulthood as it had here in this movie for Sally and Gillian.

Movies That Made Me!

My life has been changed over the years by several movies. All of them contain powerful women, just like me. I was not always this way, however. Growing up, my mom was treated like dirt by my dad. Unfortunately, she wasn’t strong enough to get out of the relationship at the beginning. I vowed that … Continue reading Movies That Made Me!

Movie Scenes that Changed My Life

This assignment was movie scenes that changed our lives and it was worth 5 stars. You were to choose 3-5 scenes that stood out to you over the years and influenced you in some strong way. The three scenes I choose taught me three distinct lessons early on in my childhood, and preteen years. I found the clips on youtube and converted them using clipconverter (link). I then saved them to my laptop and edited them all together using Windows Movie Maker.

The first clip I choose was from Steel Magnolias. The first time I saw it I was maybe 9 and I watched it with my grandmother. It is a wonderful movie that is set in the south. The women shown in the clip has just had her daughter pass from kidney failure even after having a kidney transplant from her mother. And she just cannot understand how her child was unhealthier than her since she was a little girl, and why she had to go before her mother. When I first saw this scene I was in tears. It is hard to watch a scene like this and not give an emotional response, especially if you have seen the movie. This scene and entire movie showed me how random and unfair life can be at times, and how precious our time is. We are not guaranteed a long life, or a healthy one, but that does not mean that for the short time we are here we cannot had a great life.

jjjj

The second clip I choose was from What Dreams May Come. I saw this movie I believe right in my preteen/ early teens. From the very beginning you are pretty much in tears and shock from what is going on. The movie follows a family of four. Mother, Father, and two children, whose lives are all cut short. The children die in a car accident, the father is hit by a car, and the mother takes her own life. We follow the father through his version of heaven where he meets and is guided by his two children. When he realizes that the people guiding him have been his children, he then wants to find his wife. Sadly, because she took her own life, she is in hell. He must go to the depths of hell to try and salvage her poor soul. This clip captured for me the power of love, and how strong it can be when you’re with the right person. There is nothing you would not do and no lengths you would not go to, to save the one you love.

The third clip is happier than the first two and it is from Kiki’s Delivery Service. Studio Ghibli films are extremely popular and I am sure almost everyone has seen this movie. I saw it when I was very young, I cannot even remember hold old I was exactly. But the scene I choose was from the very beginning. It was when Kiki was about to go off on her own for an entire year, and she was saying good bye to her friends and family. It struck me because she was gaining her independence but she was not entirely there yet. She used her mother’s broom to fly away, and she hit trees in the process. She was still a child but she was starting to grow up and everyone had to let her go. This interpretation occurred for me a little ways down the road and it almost mirrored myself in a way and everyone for that matter going from a transition of child to teen, or teen to adult. Where we are still making mistakes but our parents had to let us go.

TV Scenes That Changed My Life

I did the Movie TV Scenes That Changed Our Lives assignment worth 5 stars. For this assignment I picked out 3 scenes that were very memorable to me, and provided some commentary on what the situation of the scene is and why it moved me.
These are three scenes from various tv shows that have really stuck with me overtime:

1. The end of “Symphony of Illusion” from How I Met Your Mother (7×12)

2. Vincent in the Museum from”Vincent and the Doctor” from Doctor Who (5×10)

3. The Lion Turtle from “Sozin’s Comet Part 2: Old Masters” from Avatar: The Last Airbender (3×19)

To make this video, I downloaded the episodes that I was picking these scenes from. I imported them into iMovie and cut them down to the led up of the scenes and then to just the particular scenes. I then added in either a freeze frame, or silent video leading up to the scene in order to provide space for my commentary about the scenes. I used iMovie’s ability to record from the webcam to import my commentary. I also used one of the pre-made themes for the transitions. Lastly, I inserted some titles to display which episode and show the scenes are from.

Two of them are pretty emotional, but I think that’s why I can remember them so well. I know in the moment, when I first watched the first two episodes, I started tearing up during these scenes. I’m not entirely satisfied with my explanation/analysis of the scenes, but I also didn’t want the commentary to sound scripted, so I just did a couple takes of my thoughts and picked the best one for each scene.

Movie Scenes That Changed Our Lives – Assignment #1 7/17/14

The following video is a compilation of the videos I feel best have changed my life. Please enjoy!

  • Rocky Balboa

I grew up watching all of Rocky’s movies. He has served as both a role model and a source of inspiration throughout all of my childhood.  The message of the clip is beautiful. We all have had life’s fair share of challenges. However, no matter what you are responsible for what happens next. You can choose to give up and stop or you can choose to keep pushing to achieve the goal.

  • The Pursuit of Happiness

I think we can all agree that we have been where Will Smith was. The emotion is real in the scene. It was one of Will Smith’s best appearances. He had been to hell and back, yet still found a way to preserve. From the beginning to the end, this motive was both touching and emotional. I think the message was clear, if you work hard and never give up, good things will happen.

  • Despicable Me 2

I am a sucker for these movies. I find the minions are adorable. The fact that they don’t talk further draws me in as a viewer. I am able to connect with them in a deeper emotional context. I think the only way that was possible was the fact that they don’t talk.

Process:

I used two different tools to help me finish this assignment.

I used the clip converter to grab the videos from youtube to download  to my computer. I think that process was straight forward, as all you had to do was insert the clip you wanted to be downloaded to an MP4. However, the process I found difficult was using iMovie to arrange the clip appropriatelyScreen Shot 2014-07-17 at 10.17.18 PMThe hard part was trying to upload the videos on to iMovie. But after watching the following tutorial, all I had to do was place the clips in my movie folder.

Movie Scenes that Changed our Lives

Movie Scenes that Changed our Lives from Mai Shalalaiwan on Vimeo.

The opening scene of the video is a scene from the first installment of the Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen is willing to sacrifice her life for her sister to continue to live on. I read the trilogy and this moment was a very emotional one. The love Katniss has for her family is relatable to anyone who has an older or younger sister. This scene might not be life changing but it will definitely have a lasting impact in my mind.

The second scene starts at 1:11 and is also from the first install of the Hunger Games. This scene is the death of a fellow tribute named Rue. The Hunger Games is a free for all and every man for themselves type of survival game. Alliances are made in the games to kill off the weak links. Katniss Everdeen made an alliance with Rue and was getting ahead in the games. Katniss displays love towards Rue because she reminds her of her sister. Rue is killed when you gets caught under a net and her screams attract the tribute that set up the trap. Even though Katniss kills the attacker it was too late since the spear has been thrown. Katniss lays Rue to rest in a bed of flowers and is a very emotional scene.

The last scene begins at 5:37 and is the ending of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I watched this film several years ago and the ending made a lasting impact in my life. The film is about a man who ages backwards and falls in love with a woman. The ending scene proves how strong their love connection was. The woman he fell in love with hold him as a baby and her as an old lady. Benjamin dies in her arms as a baby.

A Stronger Person

Three of my all time favorite movies are Matilda, Spirited Away, and La Femme Nikita. I always question and wonder why certain things are my favorite.  I realize all these movies have a couple things in common a strong leading woman, a bit of magic, and they all are a bit unordinary.  Perhaps thats what draws me in.  If you guys have not seen any of these movies I strongly recommend them for all ages.

I chose this assignment because immediately when I read the descriptions these three movies came to mind and I remembered just how influential they truly were to me.  It was great to watch the clips and go back down on memory lane.  It took me a couple hours to do this assignment because every time I watched a clipped I ended up going back and watching the whole thing.  Funny thing is no matter how much I age I am still intrigued by all.

The way I created this assignment was by going on youtube selecting my favorite clips and downloading them to my computer.  Edited the videos and arranged them into imovie.  All was left to do is add my commentary and upload.
