Archetype: The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing in Five Seconds

For my third assignment this week, I chose the following one, which counted for 3 stars. The challenge of this assignment was to pick a character archetype and create a 5 second long video with 5 examples of that archetype.

I chose the archetype representing a wolf in sheep’s clothing because that’s always been an interesting and frightening one to me, the idea of the wolf hiding in the midst of everyone else in plain sight. I love how this trope is used in movies and TV shows so that was perfect, and I could think of 5 examples for it. First, I chose Hannibal Lecter as a classic example of this, here from the TV show Hannibal, as he’s hired on to investigate serial killers, when he himself is a cannibalistic serial killer. Similarly I chose Dexter Morgan from the TV show Dexter, who is a forensic scientist working to help solve murders for the police department, while he himself is a serial killer. I also chose Lucifer from the TV show supernatural because in the show he appears to Sam Winchester disguised as the form of his dead girlfriend, even though it turns out he’s the literal devil in the show. Also, I chose Villanelle from the new TV show Killing Eve, who is an assassin who gets close to her targets easily because she appears unassuming. Finally, I chose Harry Hart from the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service because in the scene pictured we learned he is not a tailor, but indeed a Kingsman spy when he shows off his deadly talents.

Once again, I used Adobe Premiere elements for this assignment to piece together the clips. Here I had to make sure to trim the clips so that they were each only one second long, to make the 5 second video. I didn’t add any transitions because I thought the clips were too short and that would clutter the video, and I instead simply added some unobtrusive music to it. The most difficult thing to do here was to pick which clips I wanted to use and edit the second I wanted to capture for each.

Assignment Bank 12 #DS106 (4 Stars)

I did “One Archetype, Five Movies, five Seconds” Video Assignment.

I didn’t do the five movie part because it takes forever to download 5 movies, with copyrights, and just to only take 1 second from them. I’ll just stick with one movie, thanks.

My movie “Gunslinger” came from YouTube. I had to use Adobe Premier Pro, which is not very friendly.  I came up with “How many times can you get shot and live”

If you want to try it yourself and do way better than I did, you can find it here, http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/one-archetype-five-movies-five-seconds/

Gunslingers

One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds

Create a five second video of one archetype from five different movies cutting together one second of each. Examples could include: Prisoners, Thieves, Beauty Queens, Kings, Robin Hoods, James Bonds, Bank Robbers, Assassins, Bad Boys, Kung Fu Masters, Femme Fatales, Sports Heroes, High School Bullies, Rogue Police Officers, Brainiacs, Pregnancies, Principals, Mean Teachers, InspirationalTeachers, Gunslingers, Gangsters, Monsters, Bartenders, Warrior Princesses, Swordsman, Knights, Mad Scientists, Nerd Girls, Obstructive Bureaucrats, Sidekicks, Wise Old Men, Hardboiled Detectives, Tough Coaches, Swooning Ladies.

Since this was my first video assignment, I first had to find good movie editing software. I had one problem though, my laptop’s operating system is Windows 10. There is barely any software that can run on the Windows 10 operating system so far and even Window’s Movie Maker wasn’t compatible so I had to improvise.  I went to the all mighty Google and searched for video editing software that could operate on Windows 10 and stumbled upon iSkysoft:

iSkysoft                  iSkysoft software

It is a fairly simple video editing software, easy to use, and it works on Windows 10.

For this 3 and a half star assignment I went with the archetype of a sarcastic cop/detective. Comedy detective films are among my favorite films which is why I chose this archetype. One of my all time favorite shows, Sherlock, is a good example. Since there are many shows and movies to choose from, I knew I could easily complete this assignment. I first started by searching YouTube for five different sarcastic detective/cop film scenes. I decided to go with the films: Sherlock(Benedict Cumberbatch), Sherlock Holmes(Robert Downy Jr.), 21 Jump Street, Men In Black 3, and Psych.

To download them off of YouTube and onto my computer, I used the software called ClipGrab which is a free video downloader and converter for YouTube. It is extremely simple to use. All I had to do was copy and paste the YouTube clip URL into a field in the software and click “Grab this clip!”

ClipGrab

Then I opened up the iSkySoft software and imported each video, one at a time to make it easier to edit each individual clip. The first clip I used was from Sherlock Holmes(Robert Downy Jr.). To edit this clip. I dragged the now imported clip to the editing portion of the software and clicked on the clip which highlights it. When I found which line I wanted to use, I had to cut the rest out. I did this by pressing the “Split” button (an image of scissors), which splits the clip into two separate sections at a point of my choosing, and then deleted the half I didn’t want. I repeated this process until I got the desired line for my assignment.

Splitting clip

Then I repeated the process for the other four clips: importing them, dragging them down to the edit portion, and splitting and deleting sections of the clip until I got the desired lines.

Lastly I added an audio clip to go in the background of the completed video just to make it more enjoyable and give it an extra element. Unfortunately since I downloaded the free version of iSkySoft’s video editing software, there is a giant watermark covering the whole video and unless I buy the full version, it will not go away. So hopefully I will find a video editing software that works on Windows 10 without a giant watermark covering the video. Here is the final product:

Punched in the Face

For my One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds assignment I chose the archetype of people getting hit in the face.  Constructing the short compilation of these videos was easy in iMovie.  I had to mess with the sound levels a bit to make sure the scene at the end didn’t destroy anyones ear drums.  Let me know what you think.

These are the original videos.

Here is a screenshot of the process.

Video Assignment: Archetypes

The weirdos come to town!

One archetype, five movies, five seconds and 3 ds106 stars :)

I chose the archetype of the creeps/weirdos for this assignment and instead of using movies I used clips from some of my favorite funny tv shows which are very popular.

I used a clips from: “Cougar Town” “The Big Bang Theory” “How I Met Your Mother” and “The Office”

Have a laugh or two…….

It  was fun using getting the clips and thinking of which ones to use and them editing them using imovie, this was my first time ever working with videos

Zombie Attack Archetype

This week was the start of the video assignments. The first one was to complete the ‘One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds’. It seemed that an Archetype is a common theme subject wise in a group of movies such as the archetype I choosed to use which was zombie attack. I used the video convertor called ‘Clip Convertor’. I chose to use movies such as Resident Evil: Apocolyse, Resident Evil: AfterLife, Dawn of the Dead, Zombieland, and Day of the Dead. I downloaded all the videos, imported them into iMovie and started clipping. I tried to cut down to 5 second but I ended up getting 10 seconds. After I edited the video I added a sample from dupstep producer Skrillex song “Scary Monster and Nice Sprites”. I exported the video into youtube and changed a couple things visually. Here is the link to the clip.
