These are a few of my interests and favorite things to do. I play a lot of soccer, some videogames and constantly stay updated with new music. Not much to explain for “narrating the process” but here is a link to the original assignment A few of my favorite things assignment.

For this assignment, I took a picture of my desk to highlight a few of my “favorite things”. By using a “legal” version of Photoshop I was able to highlight the colors of these items in a Black and White photo by using a tool called ‘history brush’.
In case no one noticed, I have a slight fascination with owls. My last name, Saffos, translates to “wise man” in Greek, so once I got a tattoo of an owl to symbolize this, it became the go-to gift of all relatives and friends. Two of about twenty owls are pictured, and I love them all equally. Another nod to the family culture can be found in the lower right hand corner… the Greeks are very fond of espresso and I keep and use this cup in remembrance of my grandparents who owned the set before me.
The highlighted books are pretty self-explanatory; both Poe and Tolkien are two of my favorite authors (Douglas Adams was featured until I carelessly lost my set of the Hitchhiker’s Guide). Other than that, my favorite things are pretty mundane. A mini mouse figurine is placed next to a picture of a relative who referred to me as “Mini”, my favorite and longest lived candle, a Buddha figurine my father gifted to me, and an invite to my cousin’s wedding (weddings are a pretty big deal in my family).

In a spinoff from the Colorize It and Focus on One Color, I took a photo of my desk at home and then colorized some of my favorite things that surround me each day.
This also makes me think about how much junk I have on my desk. Maybe it’s time to make some strategic decisions and cut down on stuff I haven’t looked at it too long.
I did this pretty quickly in GIMP. I took the photo, duplicated the original and made the copied layer monochrome. Then, I applied a white layer mask and used the free select tool to get nice, crisp lines. I then filled those spaces with black to erase the mask and let the colors show through.

We tend to surround ourselves with things that make us happy. Take a photo in your house or workplace and then find a creative way to make your favorite things about that space stand out. No limit to how many things you highlight, but make it interesting and intriguing.
