Street View Story (3 Stars)

I randomly zoomed out on Google Maps and dropped the pin with my eyes closed. I ended up at 19 Pochtamtskaya Ulitsa in Kapinsk, Sverdlovsk Oblast. Which is in Russia.

19 Pochtamskaya resembles a Soviet Gulag of some sort. I can’t read Cyrillic, which is what all of the signs are in. There is a barbed-wire fence and a couple of smokestacks in the building, but they come out of the underground, not the building itself. Perhaps a secret government manufacturing center? Probably not, because the exterior of the building looks absolutely terrible. In actuality, likely a brake factory or something. If it was an apartment building in DC, the rent would easily be $2,000 a month because of the “urban design.” I wonder how many Google Street View drivers have been abducted by townspeople?

80s Madonna drive.

This is the original assignment link. I chose to make this assignment connect with the 80s theme. I chose this image from google maps the street view to create a story with Madonna going to record her next song. The car reminds me of an 80s car perspective, and the image makes you think about where the car is going. Madonna is driving to record her next song, while she is playing her recent songs on the radio. She has a show coming up and she is heading to the recording studio.

A picture from Kai’s world

In the year 3033 things were very rough for simple astrobark farmers. Below is a picture of an abandoned astrobark storage shed. On it you can see the gang tag of the local gang found in Kai’s town, the “Blue”. The Blue are an extremely violent gang that has slowly grown due to a lack of effective ruling and an ineffective criminal justice system in the area. You can see in the background that there are more old buildings in the back that probably date back more than one thousand years. This picture illustrates the similarities to old Earth environmentally. Many of the trees, plants, and wildlife are almost identical despite having very different genotypes. It is a phenomenon that is still being researched in the most prestigious Universities throughout the solar system.

It is rumored that this specific astrobark storage shed used to belong to a semi-prosperous family. This family was very committed to harvesting the ground born plastic precursor that was so necessary to the area’s economy. Unfortunately this family was unlucky enough to be the next stop on the Blue’s warpath. The Blue’s needed more money to resist the local law enforcement’s push back against them, thus they were extorting and applying pressure to farms in the area. This extortion attempt was met with resistance by the owner of the farm, which resulted in the slaughter of the family to teach other farms in the area the consequences of resisting. When Kai first heard this story he was horrified, terrified, and also very angry. He immediately made up his mind to fight such a horrible force in the world, and put a stop to their violence.

This picture is actually from Yuendumu, in Australia. I picked this area because I wanted a rural picture with limited greenery, due to the fact that it needed to be an astrobark farm. It was funny as I was digging through Google maps I didn’t really know what I wanted until I saw this picture. It even had a little drawing or, “tag” which I could use to add in a antagonist into Malachi’s story. After I found the street view that I wanted, I simply took a screenshot and then added that screen shot to my blog. This assignment was interesting, made more interesting because I needed it to have some sort of relation to my character. Hope you enjoyed!

Street View Story (3 Stars)

For this visual assignment, I did another “try random one” and came across the “Street View Story” assignment. Being an English major, I was more than excited to find an assignment that incorporates visual as well as textual elements. The photo is of Ponte Cavour, Rome, Lazio, Italy. Here is the little story I came up with for this picture:

The first time I lost her was because of the lights. I was seven and she was four, and we lived in Rome. First, we went to the river, even though we weren’t allowed. We loved the water. Lily liked to watch her reflection; she thought of it as a friend who she always wanted to meet, hiding down there below the surface. We decided to play hide-and-seek by the bridge. It was our favourite game. But Lily was too good at hiding. It was her turn to hide, and I failed to find her. I kept looking until it got dark, but I had to go home and tell my parents I had lost Lily. Mother wailed when I said it, but Father grabbed my arm, and we ran back to the fields to find her. We brought lanterns and searched for hours, hoping for a glimpse of her thick brown hair, her enormous blue eyes. We didn’t find her until she popped out of the water; that’s how good she was at hide-and-seek.

Hope you enjoyed my story!

Visual Assignment – Street View Story

For my new assignment, I decided to try out the Street View Story inwhich I found a location using Google Maps Street View and then make up a story in regards to it. I decided to check out the Roman Colosseum and noticed a man in the entrance. He looked like he was depressed, hunched over almost dragging his back leg. This struck me as interesting and I came up with his back story.

Many moons ago, in Rome, a forgotten battle waged between two opposing sides.

The Romans ruled over a large, valuable land with an overabundance of banana trees and sugar cubes. They were happy and lived their obese lives with a sense of security that their Monday Night Yatzee Marathons would last forever.

However, this prosperity did not sit well with everyone. A mile out of the main Roman City lived an evil, exiled wizard who answered by the name of Slagathor. Slagathor had been exiled from the Roman city due to accusations of cheating during the semi-final round of their annual donkey races. He felt his exile was unjust, harboring a hatred for the city and its inhabitants. He spent every night of his grueling four day exile thinking of ways to get back at them. Looking over scroll after scroll, he began to become frustrated and almost gave up. Fueled by his frustration, he decided to invade the city and lay waste to it, ending the problem once and for all. Slagathor went alone, since bringing his army of minions with him would be too noticeable. Attacking from the inside would be more effective.

The Roman Legion was led by the infamous Biff Wellington, who was known for his intuition and his savage and controversial Yatzee techniques. On this particular day, Biff was told to pick up the dry cleaning by his ward and happened to be near the front gate, noticing Slagathor entering the kingdom. As Slagathor made his way into the Colosseum, Biff gathered the best the military had to offer, expecting the worst, and followed him in.

As Biff and his men entered, they noticed Slagathor standing in the middle, facing them and smiling. As Biff was about to speak, Slagathor conjured his minions and sent them racing towards the military. The fight lasted for hours, as every minion and every man was defeated, leaving Biff Welington standing over Slagathor with a glint in his eye. With Slagathors last breathe and ounce of magic, he did the worst thing he could do Biff – curse him with eternal life.

Now, every year, Biff returns to the Roman Colosseum to mourn his fallen allies as well as hold a yatzee tournament in remembrence.

Roppongi Street View Story: ds106

The name of this ds106 assignment is called “Street View Story.” The purpose of this assignment is to use Google Maps or Google Earth to find a street view picture of a place you have been to, then to explain the significance of the picture. So for assignment I grabbed a picture of a club I have visited a couple times out here in Tokyo. While it’s definitely not the best club in Tokyo, they do play very good music here. I choose this picture because just last weekend while I was there celebrating my friends birthday the police came and shut the club down. It was kinda a big scene there were some 50 cops and there was even a news crew filming the whole incident. It wasn’t until later that I  found out the reason the club was shut down. Apparently the club had been operating without a license to allow dancing and to be open past midnight, which I found to be funny.  The club was frequented by a lot of foreigners, so now that it’s closed I’m not exactly sure where they are going to go now. I’ve posted a youtube video clip of the incident below:

When In Rome: A Street View Story

I had been playing around with the idea of using a combination of Google Street View and sound effects from the Freesound.org project for awhile now. Today’s news that Google now has Street View inside of famous landmarks is all the prodding I needed to start playing. My recommendation is to wear headphones and watch this full screen if possible.

Street View Story: Barney Rubbles Troubles

The year is 2525. The prime minister of England was planned to make an important announcement on national television. Barney Rubble and the rest of his fellow Englanders were waiting anxiously for the Prime ministers announcement. Barney worked as a caretaker of St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The night before, Barney had a little too much to drink and had woken up in a dumpster. Once he pulled the banana peels out of his pocket he ran home to listen to the Prime Minster’s message. When he turned on his TV the minster was already halfway into his speech. Barney then learned that the minster has planned to destroy St. Paul’s Cathedral and put in a Water Park in its place. Everyone knows that Englanders hate old churches like St. Paul’s and love water slides. Barney was ecstatic when he heard the news but then he remembered that he would lose his job. Barney had a choice to make, either allows the water park to be built and have fun for the rest of his life or save the cathedral and his job. Barney then realized that he was an old wrinkly man and he didn’t think anyone would want to see him in a bathing suit. He would try to save the cathedral. The day of the demolition Barney hijacked the wrecking ball machine thing and proceeded to destroy downtown London. He drove the machine to Buckingham place and took out the Prime Ministers office. Soon an angry mob started chasing the machine luckily Barney had a wrecking ball and scared everyone away. St Paul’s was saved and Barney was elected new prime minister due to his impressive wrecking ball skills.
