So don’t get me wrong, vet school is great and everything…but it can get messy very quick. I decided to make this meme just because I needed to make light of a situation that was not very fun. Today in vet school, I went to my internship working under a local vet. As I’m learning more in school, Dr. Wilson has been allowing me to do more hands on things with the animals that come in (under his supervision of course). So today, this beautiful snow white Poodle came in to the office to get some check ups done on his stomach because he’s been acting different lately and not eating well. In order to do some of the tests that we had to run, we had to give him a little bit of sedative just so he wouldn’t freak out. Well, I got the honors of administering the shot. It would’ve helped us to know that this animal was the absolute WORST at taking shots. As soon as I insert the needle for the shot, he jumps up and leaps at me with the force of something that you couldn’t imagine a poodle could deliver. I fall backwards, smacking my head against the wall and dropping the needle. Meanwhile, this dog is jumping all over me and barking at the needle laying on the ground like it would jump up and attack him. Eventually, the half of the shot that I actually got to give him starts to kick in and he gets just sleepy enough to stop jumping all over the room. He still had the largest look of panic in his eyes, but he physically could not jump around anymore. Dr. Wilson quickly drew the medicine in another needle and administered another half of the shot needed for the full dose. This was by far one of the most embarrassing yet scariest moments I have experienced in school so far. So, although vet school can sometimes just seem like a bunch of students playing with animals, I hope people start to realize that animals can freak out just like humans except they can’t use words. What a day as an intern….
I chose the assignment, Demotivate Yourself! (2 stars), which I found to be very cool and easy to make. Demotivational posters are everywhere, some funny, some not so funny. Once I figured out the message that I wanted to incorporate into the poster, my next step was to figure out how to make one properly. With a simple search, I came across a site called Despair, which is a DIY Demotivational Poster Generator.
All it took was four easy steps, and BOOM, I had a finished product. I loved that the layout was already set up. First, I added my image, followed by the title of the poster. The last step was to type in my caption. That was part that took the longest for me because I kept going back and forth with it, editing different sayings. Lastly, the only thing left to do was hit the download button, and the poster saved instantly in my downloads folder. I did not bother changing the font or adding color, although it gave me to option to.
The part of the assignment that took me the longest was figuring out the title and caption. I finally decided to focus on the word, Loyalty. Before coming up with my caption, I viewed some similar posters pertaining to Loyalty, just to get an idea on how to flip the meaning on my own. I wanted my caption to be “Real”, and less about being funny. People throw the word loyalty around too loosely these days. From past experiences, and experiences from others around me, I’ve learned that it is really hard to find loyal friends and partners. I’ve had friends who had their so-called “friends” stab them in the back by messing around with their girlfriend. So thats where the inspiration came from. I just wanted to remind people to keep their eyes open, because these types of situations can happen to them. Just like the saying goes, “Keep your enemies close, and your friends even closer”.

Another adventure with Random Assignment Ideas! This time, it’s demotivational posters! Both were created using Motivator.
So my dad is a mall Santa, and this past Christmas my stepmom and I went to spy on him while he was working. When it was the turn of a little girl and her brother to visit Santa and get their picture taken, she immediately started crying. To calm her down, one of her parents gave her their iPhone to play with and she immediately stopped crying. And completely ignored Santa, the photographer, all attempts to get her to look at the camera. Her attention was completely consumed by the phone. So I snapped a picture of her (yes, that’s my natural-bearded Santa dad in the picture).
I could comment on how it’s a pretty sad state of affairs when kids are more interested in technology than imagination, but honestly, I remember being terrified of Santa at that age. Weren’t we all? And it’s great that technology can serve as a distraction and comfort for frightened children. Though the Brothers Grimm might disagree…
Many moons ago, I saw this entertaining juxtaposition of Tweets and found it so funny I took a screencapture. And then it sat on my phone for a long, long time, until I was looking through my photos to find good demotivational ones. And I saw it, and thought “YES!!!”
In the ed tech community, Twitter is touted as a great networking tool and way of building community. It’s not uncommon for professional group discussions to be held on Twitter with specific “chat” hashtags, every event has a Twitter back channel, and even ds106 uses Twitter as the fastest way to reach out to other students/participants and the instructors. It’s great for connecting with people!
It’s also a social networking site originally made popular by celebrities (or their personal assistants posing as them) and features such pop culture gems as #yolo, the #BigBird presidential debate fiasco, the timely marketing campaigns during the Super Bowl black-out, and more celebrity meltdowns and outbursts than can be reasonably catalogued by a single Top 10 (or 25) list. And it’s a cool storytelling medium for this reason. But is it really a bastion of open inquiry?
To be sure, Twitter is an awesome tool for creativity, sharing, and free speech. Heck, just look at the role it played in the Arab Spring. But let’s keep things in perspective people. After all, yolo.

Sticking with my fishing theme from my cartoon collage. I decided to make a motivational/demotivate poster showing what happens most of the time when you are fishing. For some, the waiting is the worst part and for others its why they go fishing! I used the website http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/demotivational-posters#.TpqQL96F9t to create the poster by uploading a photo and editing the dimensions and text.

Alright, this was my first demotivational poster. I followed the guidelines set out in one of the tutorial posts. I went to the website http://bighugelabs.com/motivator.php which has a nice little template that makes this two star assignment incredibly simple.
I chose Office Space because it never fails to remind me that my future is going to be sitting in a cubicle all day wondering where my life went. And the Bobs here remind me that my time with the company probably won’t last that long, either. Joy. I’m going to go sob into a beer now.
