My Sandwich in a Movie – DS106 Visual Assignment week 14

I wanted to practice with some more photo editing and decided to take on an extra visual assignment to tryout Pixlr, which I have read is a powerful free and online photo editing tool. I was drawn to Visual Assignment 559: Creep on a Movie Scene, because I love Star Wars remixes. I decided to go in a little different direction and instead of inserting myself into the scene I added my sandwich, my awesome Death Sandwich! (The secret is using a Death Star waffle iron as a panini press)

To make my final image I need to learn how to do three actions with the Pixlr tool. First I wanted to color the sandwich to look more like the Death Star, I used the magic wand tool to select regions of specific colors and then was able to fill a new color of paint into those regions. I also learned how to make new layers of text so I could move it around independently. Finally, and most important I was able to remove the sandwich image from its background, in order to add it into the classic “That’s no moon” scene from Star Wars.

What is a country that I have heard of…

For this assignment, creep on a move scene, I originally thought it would be a good idea to put myself in a horror movie, maybe even cover myself in blood or something. Although this was admittedly easier, it is, to me, somewhat more entertaining. After I decided against a horror film, I thought a Tarantino movie would be a good idea. I was going to make myself into the cop in the trunk in Reservoir Dogs, but none of the images contain both the characters and the officer. So, I went with this iconic image instead. Imagine, if you will, that Samuel L. Jackson just came along with a gun and an armed compatriot and started eating your Big Kahuna burger. I tried for a look of apprehension in the photo, which I had to take specifically for this image because of the angle, but I think the angle obscures the wonderful face acting that I had done.

Process wise, it was all rather simple. I found the image, took note of the angle of the character in the picture, and had someone snap a photo from the appropriate angle. I added the scared look for a nice touch. There was one take of the photo where I looked more scared, but the angle was bad so I discarded it. It was harder to recreate that look than I imagined. After that, I added the face image to gimp, added a transparent background, cropped it around my face and saved it as a layer. Then, I added the face layer to the scene image, resized it, flattened it, and voila!
I am entertained enough with the results that I think I will make this my facebook profile pic for a while…

Don’t Mind Me

One of this weeks visual assignments was “Creep On A Movie Scene”. The instructions were to, “Add yourself to a movie scene! Preferable a famous movie. The creepier you are, the better.” I really cant think of anything creepier than this:

Creeping on The Invaders

creeping_on_invaders

To round out my Visual Assignments for the week, here is a younger me creeping on “The Invaders” inspired by the Creep on the Movie Scene assignment by Jack Mulrey, an old gold #ds106er . I always liked the idea of editing myself into a scene, and what better to be there when the “alien” shows himself to the giant.

This was a pretty easy edit in GIMP. I took a screenshot of the still I wanted to creep on and then found an image of myself that could potentially fit. After that, I opened both as layers and then moved the image of me in the lower-left hand corner and traced out the profile with the free select tools (the lasso icon) and then cut myself out and pasted it into a new layer. I then deleted the old layer I just cut myself out from and then selected the layer containing just my image and used the Colors–>Colorize menu selection and messed with the Hue, Saturation, and Brightness settings to match the scene. After that I export it as a JPG and I am officially creeping!

Let me introduce the Invaders

Thought I’d creep into the Invaders episode to say hi.  I used GIMP to edit this photo and it was pretty simple.  Tons of helpful directions online.  Quick tip: make sure to save your file in GIMP then export it so it can be supported as a .jpg or .png file when uploaded.  Good luck.

Here is the assignment if you would like to try it and here is the link to the Invaders episode.

Difficulty: 2 stars

Creepin on Castaway

This was my first time using photoshop so it was a little rough. I thought Castaway was an interesting movie to creep on since a major part of the movie was him thinking he was alone on the island…if only he turned around.

Creeping on Freddy vs. Jason

I used pixlr to edit myself into the image from “Freddy vs. Jason” in which they begin their epic fight scene.
