Visual Assignment: Path Less Traveled; 2 Stars

Path less traveled- 2 Stars

I saw this assignment and saw a really awesome opportunity. I figured I would use one of my photos that I was less fond of, and incorporate it into an assignment. I figure it is best to make use of it rather than be ashamed of it. So I went and found a tutorial on how to get the vintage effect on my photo! It was super helpful, so I will post the link on here: http://designinstruct.com/photography/vintage-photo-effect-photoshop/ .

I used this to manipulate the image I had taken for a daily create, and used the text tool in Photoshop CS6 to write the quote in Helvetica font. This is how I came up with the final product, which I was super happy with. I looked back upon this project and thought, it was pretty cool to have done something different and off the cuff with this photo. I like to look at other people’s tutorials and try to apply certain effects to my work; it makes it more interesting and gives me more confidence in my abilities and in the work I am doing. I encourage everyone to use the resources out there, because they can be super helpful and inspiring for your future work!

Pick A Bad Photo, Apply A Vintage Effect And Write Something

This visual assignment was quite fun! I have recently become acquainted with disc golfing over the past year. I regularly take friends who have never gone before , this picture was from a trip in which, the star of the shot was still learning. The action picture did not turn out great but with a blue cross fade effect and witty quote, I could not stop laughing and thinking about how much fun was had.

Theodore Roosevelt and the Dakota Wilderness

Pick A Bad Photo, Apply A Vintage Effect And Write Something In Helvetica

I went on a trip to North Dakota to go hunting with my grandfather and took this picture. Didn’t really like the picture, but I do think it accurately represents ND, in that its sort of barren, but the sky was beautiful. I also had to sub Arial for Helvetica, I’ve got Windows OS. I knew Theodore Roosevelt was an outdoorsman so I searched around to see if I could find one that fit.

Some Inspiration on a Wednesday

This assignment was Pick a Bad Photo and Apply a Vintage Effect. This was one of the easier of the assignments, especially after all the other experience I have had with Gimp this week. I chose kind of a boring photo  that I took of a bunch of rocks on a beach in California. After changing its contrast and applying the Gaussian blur effect I ended up with an image that I really liked. It wasn’t quite clear what a vintage effect was but I think it looks cool and these days it seems anything is vintage. I really like C.S. Lewis and his quotes and so chose this one. I’m a firm believer that each individual  controls their won outcome and this quote stood out to me. My version of Gimp was kind of funny about text so I added the text through Paint.

Visual Assignment #1 – 2 Stars

Alright, here is my first attempt at a visual assignment.  For my first visual assignment, I’m choosing to do this one.  We are to pick a photo, apply a vintage effect and then add some Helvetica font to the photo.  This one actually took me a little bit of time because I wanted to find a good website to edit photos online.  After some Googling, I ran across this website called Pixlr.  This site is absolutely amazing for editing photos and not having to download any software.  I highly recommend it for any of these Visual Assignments that we have to do this semester.  This is definitely a gem, guys.  You can upload photos for free and then edit them right in your browser and then save the file in whatever format you would like.

Okay, so I had to definitely put some thought behind this one.  I went to Cirque du Soleil a couple weekends ago with my girlfriend and managed to snap this picture. When I was flipping through my photos on trying to decide which one to choose, I ran across this and immediately just thought of trusting someone with your life.  In this instance, the guy swinging from the pole is trusting everything that he has in the person holding him to not drop him.  I couldn’t have found a more amazing photo to make vintage and add text to.  I think my selection of “Put trust in others.” is perfect for this occasion too.

I hope you guys like my photo/effect/text as much as I have!  I’m going to definitely be keeping this one as one of my favorites for sure.  Also, you can view the full picture on my Flickr site

Changing

I chose a blurry, badly accidentally taken photo of the ground and added the antique effect in iPhoto. Adding enough of the effect to make the photo look old, but not so much as to make it look like a sepia effect. I added text in photoshop as the finishing step.

I chose a quote from Leo Tolstoy about change. Currently, change is the overall theme of my life at this point. My family is moving, changing addresses, states, and sides of the Mason-Dixon line. I am personally changing myself and how I live my life and interact with others. The world is changing, politically, economically, and socially. This quote spoke to me in way other quotes about change didn’t. Many people want to change external things but not many people stop and actually change themselves. They might think about it, but thinking and wishing for change is not the same as doing and changing.

Day 60: Bad Photo, Vintage Effect & Helvetica challenge

Day 60′s assignment was: “ Make something that casts a shadow and document only the shadow.”

After procrastinating on this assignment, I finally dragged my friend’s sister into posing with me for a shadow photo. Then, since all the photos were kinda terrible, I decided to do Visual Assignment 52 where you take a bad photo, add a vintage effect and then add a silly phrase in helvetica.

I edited the photo  in Pixlr (amazing free photo editing website!) then asked my friend for suggestions for a phrase to use.  One of them is slightly negative and the other one is more positive. I couldn’t decide which one I liked more so I ended up posting both:

Assignment 4 (part 4) – Pick A Bad Photo, Apply A Vintage Effect And Write Something In Helvetica

I took this photo a few weeks ago, using my Iphone . This is my cat Mr Dimples, and he likes to let his tongue hang sometimes. Anyways I thought I’d use it for this visual assignment. For this Assignment I used this Iphone app called Photo Studio and then selected the vintage filter to give it 70s feel. After saving photo to my library I then proceeded to opening it up in a different app called Photo Notes, to add the caption.

Sepia

This picture was pretty stinky before. Which was sad because I took it because of the beautiful fall colors that were there it real life. Poor lighting really killed the picture. I think it is much improved by the changes to the color scheme and it makes a great background!

Apply A Vintage Effect And Write Something In Helvetica

Here’s something I did for one of my visual assignments. It was to take a bad photo and apply a vintage effect and write something in helvetica font. So i took this picture of a guinea pig in my pocket (don’t worry, no animals were harmed during this photo – it was rather happy in there) and named it wocket in my pocket.. you know.. from Dr.Suess.

I did a bit of hue and color correction using photoshop and added a bit of grain and gradient to give it that vintage/washed out effect and finally added the text.
