What They Might Have Done In Social Media

This is an assignment I was familiar with in the past.  I thought it was a fun assignment and I enjoyed doing it again.  I chose Bill Cosby because he is someone I respect and value as a comedian, father, and activist.  He says makes a lot of statements that don’t go over too well in the public but I feel the truth hurts a lot of people and that’s why he has some negative comments about his quote.  I provided a screen shot from my computer of the completed assignment.

Friend Mulan (What They Might Have Done in Social Media Assignment)

Here is the last component of my final project! For this final assignment, I wanted to do a web assignment, so I went with one of my favourite ones, the “What They Might Have Done in Social Media” assignment.

For this one, you have to make a fake Facebook page and fake Twitter tweet. Since I’m doing Mulan for my final project, I made the social media pages applicable to her in a hypothetical high school setting.

Here’s the fake Facebook I made for her (click on the picture for the page!):

Anddd here’s the fake tweet I made:

The one problem I had making the social media pages was trying to figure out what date to put for the Facebook posts, the tweet, and Mulan’s birthday… The Disney movie never really stated when Mulan took place, so I had to Google around. I found out that Mulan is based on a Chinese legend! Who knew, right? I was reading the history of Hua Mulan, and apparently nobody really knew when the poem was written. They think it was written before the Tang dynasty (which starts in 618), so I just picked a date that was before then.

But omgosh, I can’t believe I’m done with all the components of my project! Now to put them together into a cohesive story… Look out for my next post for the finished product (:

I Much Prefer Twitter to Facebook, Except in This Case

I am almost always on Twitter, it’s actually unhealthy. However, when it comes to creating social media for famous or fictional characters, the Twitter tool is very lacking since it only allows one tweet at a time (I mean I tweet one time per 30 minutes). The facebook tool, while outdated still has some great features and can do a really good job of telling a story.

For the facebook that I made for Prince Eric I decided to focus on setting the mood for the story that I want to tell. As you can see, he takes his trip in which he has a great night and can’t stop singing (I mean he did meet Ariel after all). They then become friends on Facebook and you can see the rest from there. The thing that I really liked about this was the timeline that you can use. Having a timeline in a story is so critical to help people have an idea for what exactly is going on.

There really isn’t much more to say about this, I used the classroom tool of Fakebook in order to create the page. Some of Eric’s friends on the side are Ariel’s sisters and workers in the palace, all of whom are featured in the movie.

Stay tuned for the final project!

Youtubing it My Way, Or “Mary finally got a facebook”

We had to complete five-stars worth of assignments from the Web Design bank this week.  I had so much fun with the Hackasaurus tool that I chose to go with the assignment that required us to use it again!  I chose “Youtube it Your Way” for my first assignment, which was worth three stars.

There is a really adorable video of a lamb hopping through somebody’s house, and all of the linked videos are of lambs or goats as well.  This is what the page looks like really:

lambvideo

Here’s the page after I was finished with it:

lambvidafter

And here’s the actual page.

For this one, I changed the page to be about President Obama.  I tried to edit the link video titles to have something to do with what was in the image AND President Obama, but sometimes it’s just about the President.  I also edited the comment section because I wanted it to be relevant to the new topic of the page but also reflective of the Youtube comment streams, which are often terrifying and/or immature.

For the second assignment that I chose, I did “What They Might Have Done in Social Media.”  This assignment was worth two stars, totalling me at 5 stars!

For this assignment, I chose to make a facebook page and a tweet for Mary Magdalene.  I originally was going to try to do something more contemporary, but as a religion major whose focus is women in early Christianity, I wanted to choose something more closely related to my major.  Mary Magdalene often gets an unearned reputation as a prostitute or a repentant whore.   In the Bible, she is referred to as neither of these things.  In fact, she is only mentioned at all a handfull of times and none of them have anything to do with her profession.  Her only fault in the Bible is having a popular name for the time, and her image is conflated with that of another woman who is called a prostitute and then a few centuries into Christianity, a Pope declared in his Easter Homily that several of the women in the Gospels, including Mary Magdalene, were the same woman.  And ta-da! Mary’s suddenly a prostitute.

So I decided to create a facebook page that would be updated and commented on at and following Jesus’ death.  Due to speculation that she was in a relationship with Jesus, I have her listed as ‘in a relationship’ and she is devastated following his death (not that she’d have to be dating him to be sad).  Her twitter account is updated once rumors of her being a prostitute show up and she is complaining about being “misunderstood.”

Check both pages out:

Teddy Roosevelt***

To complete my 5 stars worth of assignments, I did the “what they might have done in social media” activity. Worth 3 stars, I chose Teddy Roosevelt as my historical figure, because he is one of my favourite president’s.  His facebook showed him in his golden years and talked about his job and birthdate.

Teddy FB

His twitter announced in 1901 that he had just become the 26th President of the United States.

Teddy Twitter

Like Barack Obama did in the recent elections, I believe that Teddy Roosevelt could have really used Facebook and Twitter to promote his candidacy and get the support of the voters.

JC!

For my next Web Assignment I did What They Might Have Done In Social Media.  The premise of this assignment was to make a Facebook and twitter for any historical person.  I decided that my person that i wanted to do was Julius Caesar.  Since the Ides of March just passed about a week ago, I felt that this was appropriate.

To make the Facebook I used Fakebook.  This website was super easy to use and all you had to do was insert different posts and bios similarly to how you would add them on Facebook.  Here is my Julius Caesar Facebook page:

Facebook

To make his twitter I used Twister. Just like Fakebook this was quite easy to use.  You just had to type in the name of the person you were using and what you wanted to tweet.  The website inserted the picture and everything.  Here is my Julius Caesar tweet:

That’s five stars!!

What They Might Have Done in Social Media- 3 Stars

While browsing through the web assignments list, this one definitely grabbed my attention. It’s probably because one, I’m taking a course called “Social Media” this semester, and two, I have a social media internship right now. So yeah, I definitely felt obligated to do this.

First, you have to go on this site, which creates fake Facebook pages for whomever you choose. I decided to do something funny, so I chose Kim Jong Un, the dictator of North Korea. I think he popped into my head first because I recently just read an article about Dennis Rodman’s visit to North Korea. Anyways, I tried to make it as funny as possible. Here’s the FB profile I made for Kim Jong Un:

Along with a FB page, we also had to make a fake tweet that our person would actually make using this site. I was inspired by this American Dad scene for my tweet for Kim Jong Un:

I used the quote that funny asian guy says, added in the date for that failed missile launch last year, and BAM! All done! Haha, so here’s the tweet I made:

I hope you guys had a good laugh! Let me know what you guys think!

Fake it, til you make it

This 3 star “What they might have done in Social Media” assignment was really interesting. The purpose was to take a historical figure and create a “Fakebook” and use “Twister” to show what sort of tweets the person might have sent out if they had social media while they were alive.

Due to my recent trip to DisneyWorld, I was inspired to create a Fakebook for the main man himself,  Walter Elias “Walt” Disney. I did look him up on Facebook and he definitely has a fan page, but I get if he had a Facebook while he was alive, it would be magical.

I hope this “FakeBook” makes Mr. Disney proud!

W.Disney's Fakebook

And if he had a twitter, he might have tweeted out something along these lines:

Twitter 3

Twitter 2

Twitter

This assignment was a blast! It was fun to consider what Mr. Disney would have tweeted or  facebook-ed about if he had access to these social media outlets. I think he would have really enjoyed being able to connect with all the people who loved Mickey, just as much as he did.

Henry VIII’s got SWAG – ???

As a History major, I just had to do this web assignment from the assignment bank called “What They Might Have Done In Social Media.” Now, I was disappointed that the example was Lincoln, mostly because I know a lot about him now that I’m taking Civil War in American Memory. But oh well!

I went out of my history comfort zone for this one: I went all the way back into European history for Henry VIII. I figured he would have a VERY interesting Twitter/Facebook if he had access to it back then. He, of all people, would have cared very little about his status as a political leader and would have posted whatever he wanted–or that’s how my limited knowledge of him portrays him.

First, I created a Tweet from him.

Then I moved onto Facebook.

This one took a lot longer to finish. I did a project once on Anne Boleyn, but I don’t really remember an enormous amount about Henry VIII. So I used his Wikipedia article to find some events, especially about his marriages.

Teaching Tool

This is a teaching tool I’ve used before in classrooms, and I love it. It requires thought and evaluation of all the information that is out there on a particular historical figure–but it’s also a lot of fun. Most students have at least heard of Facebook and Twitter so having them utilize a tool that they know so well for something educational? Sounds like a good idea to me!

Who Let The Dogs Out?

My blog title/song title will make sense once you are done reading this blog post, trust me!

For my first web assignment, I chose to do the What they might have done in social media {***} one. When I was looking through the Web Assignment Bank, this one was the first one to spark my interest.

Because I’m a psychology major, it seems appropriate to chose Ivan Pavlov to create social media pages for. If you don’t already know, Pavlov is famous for classical conditioning. He found out that dogs can be classically conditioned to salivate when they hear a bell by simply teaching them that the sound of a bell means food is coming.

Here is his Fakebook:

pavlov fakebook

And here is his Twister:

pavlov twister

I had a lot of fun creating these pages and finding the right “friends” to go on Pavlov’s Fakebook. These are neat websites that I will definitely use in my classroom when I am a teacher. Students could use these websites to create Fakebooks and Twisters for historical figures and I can assess their knowledge by reading these fake pages. I love when I can connect DS106 work to my future classroom!

Now does it make sense that my blog title is the song, Who Let The Dogs Out – Baha Men?? :)
