Radio Bumper

Creating this radio bumper was not difficult at all!! All I did was record my voice and what I wanted to say on my phone (under voice memos), send it to my laptop, and then upload it to Soundcloud. The most difficult thing was to think of what to say. I thought of many different bumpers that I have heard and I decided to keep it simple and add a catchphrase. I also decided to play the Mission Impossible theme song in the background to further tie everything together. Listening to my voice, as I’m sure everyone can relate, is the worst experience in the world. However, once I was satisfied with it, I uploaded it and embedded it into this post.

Radio Show Bumper

Here’s the bumper I made for our radio show!

First, I typed up what I was going to say. This was fairly straightforward, once my group decided on an idea and a name. I looked at each of our characters to decide how general or specific I could be, and since the characters vary rather a lot, I went with more general.

Then, I recorded what I typed up. It did take a few tries, but there was no tongue twisters or anything else that was difficult to say, so overall it didn’t take long at all.

Then, I looked into music. This was the hardest part! First, I looked on Freesound.org. I was hard to search through everything, especially since I didn’t know what wording to use. Eventually I stumbled a sound, “Windsdown”, that I figured I could edit to make my intro and outro sounds for my bumper. When I downloaded it, I noticed that I had downloaded it before. It’s actually the same sound that I used for the entirety of my first bumper that I made. However, in that one, it used this sound for the entirety, while here I have other music for when I am talking. Due to that, this is also cut and faded in and out slightly different too. Since I couldn’t find any music that I liked on Freesound.org, I went to the YouTube Audio Library. There were so many options and filters! I decided that I wanted it bright and cheerful, and not too slow. With so many options. I actually struggled to find one. I somehow landed on “Trapped”, which I liked and downloaded. What was nice was that both of these don’t require attribution, so hopefully Soundcloud is OK with them.

For the music, I edited “Windsdown” but cutting much of the middle out, then fading the intro out so it would transition better to the music. For the music, I cut most of it, since it’s 3:25 minutes long, much longer than my bumper. I listened and found a section I liked, then cut around it. I made it also quieter to more easily hear my voice, and made my voice recording louder. I simply moved the intro, outro, and music around to fit with my voice recording. Since this was only a few sounds, not 9, it was not too bad!

I am ultimately happy with this bumper, though I am willingly to make changes to it to fit with everything else if needs be.

A Mysterious-Sounding Radio Bumper

So, I neither listen to the radio often nor have ever created a radio bumper, so this was all new to me! The wording wasn’t hard to think up, as I have heard enough radio in my life to think of what to say. The hardest part was getting the music, which I got from Freesound.com. I had to surf around for a bit to find a sound that was musical enough and long enough. The music I picked sounded spooky and mysterious, at least to me, so I thought is seemed like a good choice. I also has no copyright, so I don’t have to worry about that. I used fading in and out to create the illusion of tuning in and out, and then also cut it a bit to better fit with what I’m saying.

This is the assignment that I made this for (although it doesn’t count towards the star count):

distress signal outro

From using the bumper assignment out of the assignment bank, I created an outro for our Distress Signal radio show. I first found a free song online that felt very superhero like. It’s entitled epic, how we depict our show to be. I coordinated with my group member, Ashleigh to agree on this “theme” song. Using my phone to record my voice, and Audacity to create the final project, I was able to produce this: (which will give you a sneak preview but also leave you confused on what our show will be about.)

Sleuthy Radio Bumper

This is a short little radio bumper for radio ds106. I decided to make a little play on words and call it Radio 779, which is SPY in numbers on a key pad. I liked this little assignment and got to play with some of the effects that changed my voice. I lowered the pitch of my voice and also echoed the last bit of the clip, SPY FM. I definitely thought this was a good introductory assignment to help learn Audacity.

Fake Radio Bumper… Like Really Fake

Ok… so I had fun with this. It was a conglomeration of different funny stuff I had in my head and have heard on fake radio shows like some of the old GTA games. Hope you enjoy and leave a comment on what you thought.

Sound of Music

I did my radio bumper to one of my favorite songs by Bon Iver: Tower. His music, to me, is the perfect tunes to chill out with. Which led to this combination of layered recording. This was my first project in audacity. After a couple hours of tinkering I finally figured out how to  open it on my mac (security issues). Then,  I spent some time exploring how it works. Audacity is simple for the most part, however, there are still some parts i’ve yet to figure out (like cutting out of the track). Hope you enjoy the bumper!
